No. of bitstreams: 1 Carlos Mariano.pdf: 1353594 bytes, checksum: ddbe79d6e75675fd90629879fb0b1b8c (MD5) Previous issue date: 2011-07-15 / CNPq - Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / The navigation has played an important role in the development of communications between people in the past, this would not be possible without the discovery of new lands, access to new consumer markets and inputs and also would not be possible dissemination of knowledge between continents. Given the importance of shipbuilding industry, we will analyze the role of shipbuilding in the Amazonian economy, considering the public policy that focuses on increasing productivity, enhancing the positive effects of their investments. To better assess the economic importance of the shipbuilding industry, we tried to use economic aggregates that allow a much greater understanding of local realities and that public policies are targeted to have a larger database. Was developed for both the Table of Resources and Uses (TRU) of the Amazon for the year 2006, through this tool you can analyze the flow of shipbuilding industry and identify the linkages generated by investments made by the sector. The TRU Amazon used in this dissertation follows the pattern of publication of IBGE with 55 activities and 110 products, specifically for the purpose of specific analysis of the shipbuilding industry of Amazonas was inserted one more activity, "Construction and repair of boats," which represents the opening activity "Other Transport Equipment," and more a product "vessel" which represents the opening of the product "Other Transport Equipment." In the Amazon the shipbuilding industry has strategic importance in promoting economic development of lagging regions, given that the final product of the production process of the sector is a capital asset used in the distribution of wealth generated in the state.

'Foreign' books for English readers : published translations of navigation manuals and their audience in the English Renaissance, 1500-1640

Schepper, Susanna L. B. de January 2012 (has links)
Although there has been an increasing interest in the study of Renaissance translations and the early world of print, the history of navigation and exploration has not been the subject of any such in-depth bibliographical research. This thesis identifies and analyses a corpus of translated navigation manuals and related works that were printed in England between 1500 and 1640. The context is sketched by defining the different areas of maritime writing found in Renaissance England. Although English contributions were particularly strong in such topics as the mathematical side of navigation, the technical instruments and the debates about magnetism and compass variation, publications of manuals and sailing directions were scarce. This thesis reveals that such knowledge was imported from continental Europe through translation. Forty-three translations out of seven different source languages are discussed from a book-historical perspective to establish what their source text was, how they came to England and who was responsible for translating and publishing them. Such information was obtained, in part, from a study of the paratexts, in particular the translators’ and publishers’ dedications and addresses to the reader, which show the reason and purpose of the translations, the methods employed and particular problems encountered, as well certain linguistic and rhetorical characteristics. One work is selected as a case-study for in-depth research, namely Martin Cortés’s Breue compendio de la sphera y de la arte de nauegar (1551) and its translation by Richard Eden, The Arte of Navigation (1561), which went through ten editions and became the model for English navigation manuals. Finally, by turning to the agents involved in the production and dissemination of these translations, particularly the printers and booksellers, and establishing the connections between them, this thesis reveals intricate social networks and sheds new light on certain aspects of the fields of navigation, translation and print.

The Somers mutiny of 1842

Goldberg, Angus Ephraim January 2000 (has links)
This dissertation presents an analysis of the Somers mutiny of 1842 that goes beyond the simple narratives offered by previous studies of the cruise. The mutiny is examined within the context of contemporary American politics and social reform, particularly as they related to naval affairs. These emphases clarify the rationale behind the cruise of the Somers, and shed light upon the nature of her crew. The immediate physical environment of the brig is described in order to reveal the difficulties in its operation, and the destabilising effect that this had on both the functional and social worlds of the vessel. The social environment on board is further defined by examining the daily progress of the cruise with reference to antebellum naval life and practice. When so combined, these factors clarify the officers' perception of the mutiny threat, and go far to explain their actions throughout the crisis. Finally, the dissertation examines the controversy that arose after the Somers returned to the United States. In particular, the military courts convened to investigate the mutiny are subjected to critical analysis since they are fully part of the events that they purported to explain, and because their proceedings remain the primary source material for reconstructing the cruise it is necessary to identify their biases. To conclude, the societal lessons of the Somers mutiny are explored, and an alternative reading of the event is posed.

A theory on maritime power for the not-aligned not-nuclear naval powers, with Sweden and Ireland as case studies

Kearsley, Harold John January 1990 (has links)
The study examines the maritime power of states not allied with either superpower and not dependent upon nuclear weapons for any portion of their defence. They are the Not-aligned, Not-nuclear, Naval (N-Cubed) states. A review of post 1945 naval theory is undertaken and a unique view of maritime power for N-Cubed states is presented. The changing maritime environment is detailed and the fact that conflict can be expected at any time, from violent peace to war, is established. Although land warfare is dominant, a navy's unique utility is presented. Based upon past precedents, seven naval missions are identified. An input/output model is used in examining the relationship between various 'inputs' or maritime characteristics with the 'output', naval missions and their hardware. A unique method of navy classification using technological level, size and power projection capability, is employed. Two European case studies, spanning a large technological spectrum and insuring the model is a valid tool to investigate different states, are employed. Sweden and Ireland's 'inputs' and the process by which they are transformed into specific naval missions or 'outputs' are examined. They were chosen because of their common European base but differing inputs and naval force structure. The investigation assesses their ability to meet mission commitments with an evaluation of gaps. The idea that European states can act as role models for other N-Cubed states is explored. The conclusions are that N-Cubed states are unique and require a unique theory on maritime power. The input/output model is an excellent guideline with flexibility in dealing with differing states. It suggests needs that many states are not dealing with. There exists much waste in economic, material and human resources which could be trimmed to a more cost-effective and responsive maritime defence structure.

Tudo pela patria the Brazilian Navy's drive to blue water

Connors, Michael E. 06 1900 (has links)
The Brazilian Navy is unique among most world navies today. Since the end of the Cold War, most nations have reduced their naval power, yet Brazil has maintained a determination to possess a blue-water fleet. Brazil is also attempting to assert itself as the regional power in South America, in this case through the development of a modern yet modest naval force capable of projecting power beyond its shores. This thesis seeks to explore Brazil's recent naval expansion through three points of view. First, Brazil is seeking possession of a blue water naval force as a likely means for it to achieve greater power and prestige amongst other powerful states in the world. Second, Brazil aspires for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, and is expanding its fleet to increase its chances of being chosen. Finally, domestic politics also have a great effect on Brazil's current drive to blue water. Creation of the civilian-led defense ministry, the expensive SIVAM surveillance system, and general public sentiment all work to favor naval expansion. The thesis concludes by summarizing the three arguments and stating that each of the three arguments have collectively contributed to Brazil's naval expansion.
