Gender and special education : what makes boys so special?

Smith, Roy George January 2000 (has links)
This study is concerned with those pupils registered as having 'special educational needs' within mainstream schools and also those who attend special schools of non normative designations and seeks to explain the over - representation of white working class boys amongst such populations. The processes of identification and subsequent allocation to non normative special categories are argued to be both class and gender biased and to represent the placement of pupils so identified along a continuum of exclusion, being an indication of their failure in conventional terms. An approach is developed which attempts to make the link between such failure and wider social and educational processes, viewing schooling as a form of cultural politics and seeing such politics as being intimately linked to wider structural relations. To this end the work of Pierre Bourdieu is employed. The aim of the research is to test and also to develop Bourdieu's theories of social and cultural reproduction and particularly his concept of habitus and its gendered embodied nature, as a means of illuminating the processes involved in the generation of these differential outcomes. The study takes the form of qualitative in-depth semi structured interviews with teachers from eight schools, five special and three mainstream, in order to generate detailed contextualised knowledge of the processes by which pupils may have been identified as having special educational needs within mainstream schools and then possibly allocated to special schools and of the assumptions perceptions and understandings of those teachers in special schools at the 'receiving end' of these processes. The resultant data is analysed using a conceptual framework provided by Bourdieu's theories. The study is placed within the context of the recent history I politics of special educational practices through a consideration of legislative and other developments of the past twenty years or so which are argued to have led to an increase in exclusionary pressures despite the rhetori~al emphases throughout most of this time firstly on Integration and latterly on inclusion.

The Play's The Thing: Staging for Success in Reading Comprehension and Fluency with Theatre Infused Curriculum

Hughes, Valencia Z.H. January 2014 (has links)
Thesis advisor: David Scanlon / Students' with moderate special needs learning difficulties often manifest as reading struggles. These students commonly struggle with decoding words because of weak phonics skills, limited automatic recognition of high frequency words and/or limited vocabulary. A further challenge for the struggling readers is to focus on comprehension while decoding. Given that these students reading comprehension and fluency generally do not improve commensurate with reading demands as they move through school, exploring other possibilities such as the use of theatre arts techniques to teach English/Language Arts may identify an alternative intervention that builds comprehension and fluency in academic reading. Through my experience as a teacher I have used theatre in the classroom as a teaching and motivational tool. This study was conducted using a multiple case study design accompanied by the teacher researcher's perspective on the impact of the theatre infused curriculum. This dissertation focuses on the effect of a reading comprehension and fluency curriculum infused with theatre techniques on students' with moderate special needs literacy engagement, fluency, and comprehension. Informing this study is empirical research on teaching reading comprehension and fluency to students with moderate disabilities, as well as empirical research on the use of theatre techniques in curriculum. Data included reading performances and outcomes, observations of students, a teacher reflection journal, and student interviews. Thematic analysis was used to develop codes to inform the study's major themes. The study has four main findings: study participants who put in the most effort increased their comprehension score, all study participants, regardless of their reading levels or reading rates on the pre-test, made improvements on both by the end of the nine week study, writing assignments in the character analysis and skit writing activities require longer periods of exposure for the study participants to master them, and performing builds confidence over time, in a supportive environment. / Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College. Consumption and wellbeing : motives for consumption and needs satisfiers in Peru

Guillen-Royo, Monica January 2007 (has links)
This thesis explores how consumption impacts on people’s wellbeing in seven Peruvian communities. It draws on social science literature on consumption and incorporates the key factors highlighted by the research on wellbeing determinants. Generally, it is accepted that consumption increases wellbeing by lifting people out of poverty and that it has a negative impact if it fails to place them at a higher social position. Other aspects defining consumption such as the symbolic meaning of goods, its pleasurable dimension, the role of goods and services as basic needs satisfiers, etc. have not been systematically approached from the perspective of their effect on wellbeing. The thesis takes on this challenge by incorporating the most salient features of consumption studied by social scientists through the concepts of motives and satisfiers. It draws on psychologists’ claim that motives are important in understanding the linkages between wellbeing and people’s behaviour. It also integrates the work of human needs theorists stressing the importance of analysing the effectiveness of goods and services as basic needs satisfiers. The research follows a multi-methods approach that takes into account the local specificities of consumption, whilst aiming for a global understanding of the key factors mediating its relationship with human wellbeing; accounting for its objective and subjective dimensions. It uses regression analysis to study how consumption affects happiness through total expenditure and motives, and qualitative methods to explore the efficiency of satisfiers in meeting basic needs. The research finds, as expected, that in the Peruvian communities consumption enhances happiness when it improves basic needs levels and places people at a higher social position. People consuming because of hedonic reasons are also happier, but those consuming for social acceptance and higher status are not. Moreover, being motivated by basic needs is negatively associated with happiness. One of the reasons might be the type of satisfiers used. The exploratory study of needs satisfiers in a Peruvian slum points at their potential inefficiency, which might be contributing to people’s frustration through consumption.

Indicadores socioespaciais do habitat em grandes cidades brasileiras: Belém e Rio de Janeiro / Indicators of socio-spatial habitat in large brasilian cities: Belém and Rio de Janeiro.

Valéria Grace Costa 15 June 2012 (has links)
This study has the purpose of evaluating and comparing the spatial configuration of the indicators characterizing the socio-spatial needs in two large Brazilian cities: Belém and Rio de Janeiro. For constructing the socio-spatial habitat indicators were used the results from the main household survey of the Brazilian Institute of Geography (IBGE): the Demographic Census. The reference year is 2000.The development of a synthetic index was another step in the research, from which have been identified and mapped the areas of socio-spatial deficiencies in the two cities. The survey results show that there are similarities and differences between such areas. Some of the differences, however, are more associated with the intensity of processes than the setting itself, showing different stages of urban development and socio-spatial deficiencies. As for the indicators used and analyzed individually, it was established that it becomes increasingly more difficult to obtain universal parameters to evaluate and measure the socio-spatial deficiencies, however some of them still stand out in this regard. Although the results were not conclusive, they suggest the need and possibility of using regional, metropolitan and intra-urban parameters, in processes involving selection and development of indicators for selection of socio-spatial areas with major needs, as well as the various forms of informal settlements.

Strategies for Retaining Employees in the Nonprofit Sector

Parker, George 01 January 2018 (has links)
Voluntary employee turnover is a concern for nonprofit leaders due to human capital's strategic role in achieving performance excellence. The consequences of volunteer turnover include loss of profitability, productivity, knowledge, and financial stability. The purpose of this single-case study was to explore strategies used by 3 leaders of a nonprofit organization in the Washington, DC, area who have experience with the nonprofit's employee retention efforts. Data were collected from semistructured face-to-face interviews and organizational documentation and analyzed through the conceptual lens of Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory. Data gathered from interviews and analyses of organizational data and performance outcomes were manually coded and thematically organized. The use of member checking the data and methodological triangulation increased the trustworthiness of data interpretation and the study. Three key themes emerged: (a) training and development, (b) advancement opportunities, and (c) strategic leadership. Through analysis of data collected for this study, nonprofit leaders can assess their employees' development needs and provide training to support their growth. Nonprofit leaders may support their employees' development by creating a career path by aligning tenure with advancement and formal training. Nonprofit leaders' actions and decisions affect workforce commitment. Nonprofit employees are intrinsically motivated to create positive social change and make an impact on nonprofits' stakeholders via programs and services. Nonprofit leaders can use this study to improve retention strategies, ensure their employees' wellbeing, and contribute to positive social change by assisting employees in ensuring stakeholder wellbeing.

Educating Staff on the Family Caregiver Needs of Brain Injury Patients

Robertshaw, Carrie Maloney 01 January 2019 (has links)
Acute rehabilitation hospitals assist brain injury patients and families who face a life- changing event to achieve greater independence and quality of life. During the acute rehabilitation phase of recovery, care is focused on the patient; however, there is a nationwide movement to implement patient- and family-centered care because caregivers experience grief and uncertainty about how to care for their loved one during hospitalization and upon discharge. The purpose of this staff education project was to educate rehabilitation staff on how to identify and to meet the needs of family members of brain injury patients in an acute rehabilitation center in the western United States. The patient- and family-centered care theoretical framework and Knowles's theory of adult learning supported the development and implementation of the educational program. The project site stakeholders identified educational opportunities to assist staff to meet caregiver needs and improve outcomes. Thirty-two staff including registered nurses, licensed vocational nurses, patient care technicians, and nurse managers, received education for the support of caregivers for patients with brain injuries. The program was evaluated using a 5-point Likert type questionnaire. After receiving the education all participants agreed or strongly agreed that content increased their knowledge, skills, and confidence in caring for family caregivers of brain injury patients. Implications of this project for social change include the potential to improve patient outcomes through caregiver knowledge and skills to provide care to patients with brain injury.
