The goal of this diploma thesis is the development of an application in order to simulate the function of the IPFIX Protocol, which is used to collect and transmit network data to the network management stations. For this purpose OPNET (Optimized Network Engineering Tools) was used. Briefly, IPFIX helps network managers to monitor the flow of data within the network. Throughout the first part of this dissertation emphasis is given to the study and analysis of the protocol in theory, and this way the need for a protocol that is in charge of extracting information out of network devices is underlined. In addition, extensive coverage of the widespread Cisco Netflow protocol has been made since IPFIX is based on it. Throughout the second part of this dissertation a network is presented in order to explain the way data is observed within it. The execution of the application for different, kinds of traffic, traffic intensity and ways of collecting data, using OPNET, enables us to export useful conclusions considering cost and performance of the protocol.

Secure SNMP-Based Network Management in Low Bandwidth Networks

Hia, Henry Erik 04 May 2001 (has links)
This research focuses on developing a secure, SNMP-based network management system specifically tailored for deployment in internetworks that rely on low-bandwidth backbone networks. The network management system developed uses a two-level hierarchy of network management applications consisting of one top-level management application communicating with several mid-level management applications strategically distributed throughout the internetwork. Mid-level management applications conduct routine monitoring chores on behalf of the top-level management application and report results in a way that makes intelligent use of the limited bandwidth available on the backbone network. The security framework is based on using SNMPv2c over IPSec. This research shows that the other security alternative considered, SNMPv3, consumes as much as 24 percent more network capacity than SNMPv2c over IPSec. The management framework is based on the Management by Delegation (MbD) model and is implemented using the IETF DISMAN Script MIB. This research demonstrates that the MbD-based management framework consumes only 2 percent of the network capacity required by the traditional, centralized management scheme. / Master of Science

Analysis of ATM Call Detail Records and Recommendations for Standards

Wang, Xianrui Roger 29 June 1999 (has links)
Data network resource management and capacity planning are critical for network design, operation, and management. Equipment vendors often provide good information for traffic management and control and associated tools, but this information and the tools are based on independent, individual switches or routers rather than the whole network. There is a critical need for tools to monitor general resource usage in a network as a whole. In this research, we develop a toolkit to collect ATM Call Detail Records (CDRs) from two types of ATM switches from IBM and FORE Systems. Data records collected by the toolkit can then be used to assess network resource utilization and traffic characteristics with the objective of predicting future needs, making proper network management decisions, and ultimately, assisting in the ability to provide reliable quality of service (QoS) in the network. In addition, we examine current call detail records and requirements for more comprehensive network management and make recommendations for a standardized CDR. / Master of Science

Vilanova, Felipe Jung January 2006 (has links)
With the increasing number and diversity of components of the computer networks, comes the necessity to find a consistent way to manage modern networks. This is required in order to keep all network infrastructures working in a proper and smooth way, while taking care of to the network users’ necessities and filling the network administrators’ expectations. In general aspects, the centralized management approaches are inadequate for the management of networks with a great number of nodes or great diversity of devices. The necessity of a distributed management thus becomes evident. In such distributed management, a group of administrators manages a single network in a cooperative fashion, each administrator being responsible for a segment of the managed network but at the same time being able to inspect other remote segments in order to solve non-overlapping problems. That is the motivation for having management systems with proper cooperative management support that allows interactions among administrators independent of time and location. Such a system will determine how administrators will communicate to delegate responsibilities, share information, and use the available tools. In this context, this dissertation presents the proposal of a distributed and cooperative management environment based on P2P technology. This environment offers four services: sharing of device configuration files, sharing of registered devices, configuration of devices, and bandwidth reservation. Based on the proposed environment, a Java application, using the JXTA development platform, has been implemented. This application allowed us to test and confirm the possibility of using P2P technologies for network management. In addition, the performance of the implemented solution has been measured considering the generated management traffic and response time. The results from the evaluation tests had proven the possibility of the use of P2P systems to facilitate the cooperative network management and had been sufficiently satisfactory in relation to the evaluated parameters.
