Restructuring, migration and regional policy in South Africa : the case of Newcastle.Todes, Alison Elaine. January 1997 (has links)
The thesis proposed to critique the neo-liberal perspective on regional policy in South Africa, and its emphasis on areas of strength and advantage, on two grounds. First, that it neglects processes of economic restructuring, and the possibility of place-specific decline or vulnerability. However, South Africa's increasing exposure to international markets, ongoing economic crisis, and political change, provide a context in which such conditions are likely. Secondly , these concerns are marginalised through the assumption that households can and do move out of areas experiencing restructuring or decline , or from places with weak economic bases. This assumption, however, ignores the limits to mobility in the current conjuncture, and the role of place in survival. The thesis critiques these arguments theoretically, and empirically - through a brief examination of the dynamics of restructuring and migration in KwaZulu-Natal, and a more detailed analysis of the case of Newcastle . The study of KwaZulu-Natal shows broad patterns of restructuring over the century, and points to new forms of instability in the 1990s. The research demonstrates that Newcastle has experienced several rounds of restructuring. While aggregate employment was relatively stable by the end of the 1980s, there had been a significant shift in the nature of economic activity and the composition of employment. Further rounds of restructuring coupled with employment decline - occurred in the 1990s, and key industrial sectors are shown to be vulnerable. The study of migration shows that, while there is a relationship between urbanisation and economic development in KwaZulu-Natal, there are also exceptions to it, with people remaining in, and even moving to places with weak or declining economic bases. The research did not find a complete, disjuncture ' between urbanisation and economic development in Newcastle. However, as, a consequence of past investments in place and limited opportunities elsewhere, low-income households remained in Newcastle despite restructuring. The study therefore shows that restructuring and place-vulnerability are concerns in South Africa, and that migration cannot be relied upon as a corrective. These findings underpin the need for a renewed consideration of social concerns within regional policy, and for moving beyond the 'efficiency' versus 'equity' dichotomy. / Thesis (Ph.D.)-University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban, 1997.

The precarious non-poor in Post-Apartheid South Africa : striving for prosperity in Cape Town and NewcastlePeens, Michelle 01 1900 (has links)
It is widely acknowledged that poverty has declined globally over the last few years. In fact, this
idea has become so ingrained in our society that it is almost taken for granted and assumed as
an incontestable fact. The question that remains unanswered is where all the poor are now. Are
they living a prosperous life or are they tinkering on the edge of poverty? This research study
focuses on the precarious non-poor, who are the people surviving just above Upper Bound
Poverty Line used by Statistics within South Africa. Although they are not ‘officially poor’ they are
still a group that is often overlooked or ignored within the global development community since
they are not poor enough to warrant intervention yet not secure enough to demand action. As
the research study will show through using a mixed-method approach, they are far from being
prosperous and in fact, still struggling to survive. The quantitative findings are based on a
statistical analysis of the General Household Survey (2011) that overlaps with the latest Income
and Expenditure Survey (2011). It gives valuable background to the problem that was also used
during the qualitative phase of the research study to inform the sample choice and interview
guide. The quantitative analysis shows that the precarious non-poor is not a unique problem, and
as a group, they are found across South Africa. The qualitative findings are based on in-depth
interviews conducted in Cape Town, Western Cape and Newcastle, KwaZulu Natal. Framed by
the capability approach, set out by Amartya Sen, and a focus on basic capabilities such as
employment, education and housing, the results show that the precarious non-poor lack access
and choice in terms of capabilities and the opportunity to realise them into functionings. The
precarious non-poor in this study are mostly employed within insecure, uncertain or underpaying jobs, underpinned by a social support program, living in neighbourhoods where they feel unsafe
while trying to secure a better future for themselves and especially their children. In fact, they

to perform Christ’s mission work effectively. It examines how mission could be meaningful
in contemporary society, which is challenging mission so gravely. The study challenges all
churches, including youth, women, men and clergy towards mission.
An analysis of a mission perspective is delineated, aware of the social contexts for mission
in Newcastle. The context of culture has been dealt with, encouraging the Church to be
culturally sensitive, and to use cultural means to reach people. God uses cultural means to
reveal himself. Evil cultural practices, for example, ancestral ‘worship’ and ‘talking to the
dead’ are exposed and denounced.
Bible readings promote mission in the Adventist Church. The teacher of the Bible is to study
it thoroughly, ensuring that he/she is able to proclaim the gospel. Creative teaching of the
Bible includes different levels of understanding, namely, a rote level, a recognition level, a
repetition level, an interactive and a realisation level. The gospel is to be applied in life.
Different hermeneutical approaches to the Bible are summarised, for example, a
postmodern approach.
Strategic planning regarding evangelism is vital. ‘Gift-based’ ministry would inspire all
believers to perform mission work according to people’s ability. All Christians should be
able to evangelise others, leading people as acknowledged sinners to accept Christ as
Saviour and Lord, and to establish the reign of God in society according to his justice.
The heart of the thesis is as follows:- The gospel of Christ is a missionary message to reach all people with the gospel
of salvation and societal renewal

Secondary teachers' views regarding learners' awareness on household waste management in Newcastle South AfricaMoyo, Khumbulani 01 1900 (has links)
Abstracts in English, Sotho and Zulu / Waste generation is a global problem encountered by many nations. In recent years, population growth, booming urbanisation, an increase in economic activities and rise of communities’ living standards have significantly escalated household waste generation which has been a cause for concern. Waste production in households and schools imposes serious concern on the environment. To curb further depletion of environmental resources, sustainable consumption and household waste management practices and systems cannot be over emphasised. Therefore, the aim of the study was to explore the views of secondary school teachers’ views with regard to learners’ awareness of household waste management in Newcastle, South Africa.
This study, following a qualitative approach, adopted a case study design to explore secondary teachers’ views on learners’ awareness on household waste management in the Newcastle municipality, in the Amajuba District, South Africa. By using semi- structured interviews, non-participatory observation and documents analysis, data were collected from three secondary schools and nine teachers, teaching Natural Sciences, Social Sciences and Life Orientation in Grade 8.
The findings revealed that teachers understand the importance and benefits of household waste management although misconceptions of household waste management still prevailed. A challenge that emerged showed that teachers lack training to successfully integrate household waste management in their subjects. Their failure to identify household waste management themes in their CAPS subjects was sufficient evidence for the urgency of in-service training of teachers to assist them in integrating environmental education (EE) themes such as household waste management in their subjects. Although teachers experienced several challenges regarding implementing the theme of household waste management in their subjects, they considered the benefits outweighed the challenges. / Tlhahiso ya ditshila ke bothata bo aparetseng dinaha tse ngata.
