Tramas, teias e jogos dramáticos em Edward Albee, Patrick Marber e Mike NicholsZanesco, Liane Mroginiski January 2010 (has links)
Num segundo momento, a investigação analisa dois textos dramáticos, Who’s afraid of Virginia Woolf? / This paper explores interdisciplinary aspects related to the transposition of dramatic texts into films. First, a theoretical investigation is conducted on mimetic genre, transtextuality; on drama, from the point of view of the game as a dramatic element to build implicit and explicit metadrama, and film adaptation. Secondly, this dissertation analyzes two plays, Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? , by Edward Albee, and Closer , by Patrick Marber, as well as their film adaptations by director Mike Nichols, and examines the elements and features that the authors use to create the dramatic games. Later, the plays and their film adaptations are contrasted in order to investigate elements of dramatic games, and transtextual characteristics that allow the maintenance or the alteration of meaning between the plays and their correspondent films.

Utilizing Genetic Algorithm and Machine Learning to Optimize a Control System in Generators : Using a PID controller to damp terminal voltage oscillationsStrand, Fredrik January 2022 (has links)
Hydropower is an important part of renewable power production in Sweden. The voltage stability of the already existing hydropower needs to be improved. One way to do this is by improving the control system that damp terminal voltage oscillations. If the oscillations in the power system are not damped it could lead to lower power outputs or in the worst case a blackout. This thesis focuses on the automatic voltage regulator (AVR) system with a proportional, integral, derivative (PID) controller. The PID controller’s parameters are optimized to dampen the terminal voltage instability in a generator. The aim is to develop a machine learning model that predicts the optimal gain parameters for a PID controller. The model is using the tuned gains from the Ziegler-Nichols (Z-N) method and the amplifier gain as inputs and gives the optimal gains as output. A linearized model of an AVR system, based on transfer functions was developed in a MATLAB script. This model was used to simulate the behaviours of an AVR system when a change in load occurs. The Z-N method and the genetic algorithm (GA) with different settings and fitness functions were used to tune a PID controller. The best performing method is GA with the fitness function developed by Zwe-Lee Gaing (ZL). The best performing settings are: roulette selection, adapt feasible mutation, and arithmetic crossover. The GA (ZL) was used in the development of a machine learning model. Two different models were developed and tested: the support vector regression (SVR) and the gaussian process regression (GPR). The data that was used to train the models were generated by changing the transfer functions’ time constants 4096 times. At each step, the Z-N, and the GA (ZL) were run. The GPR model is shown to be the superior model with a lower root mean square error (RMSE) and a higher ratio of variation (R^2). The RMSE for GPR is 0.1091, 0.0815, 0.0717 and the R^2 is 87 %, 59 %, and 86%. The result shows that the developed model has capabilities to optimize the PID controller gains of any AVR-system without knowing the characteristics of the components.

High school English learners and college-going : three stories of successMoon, Daniel Louis 08 July 2011 (has links)
Recent research suggests that the college-going trajectories of English language learners (ELLs) may be improved by focusing on their academic abilities rather than their English limitations; that ELLs are capable of high-track, college preparatory coursework. Most research draws on feedback or observations of current high school students. This
qualitative study uses semi-structured interviews to elicit retrospective perspectives of three Latina college students placed in English as a second language (ESL) during high school. These three former ELLs were able to navigate from ESL courses to higher-track, advanced placement (AP) courses, which prepared them for college. Results suggest that relatively short times spent in ESL may positively influence ELLs’ access to college preparatory coursework and integration with native English speaking (NES) peers
who possess college-going social capital. Results also suggest that ELLs’ perceptions of teachers’ high expectations and college-going assistance may provide important social capital facilitating ELLs’ access to higher-tracks and college. / text

Film om film : En analys av dokumentärfilmer om fiktionsfilmer / Film on film : An analysis of documentaries on feature filmsStrömberg, Daniel January 2003 (has links)
This thesis is a study of documentaries about fictional feature films. The development of the DVD format has contributed strongly to their massive increase in quantity. The capacity of the format enables film companies to include more material than the feature film itself. As some people regard this type of documentary as self-righteous and presumtious, others think of it as a great educational aid giving the audience a greater understanding of the intentions of the director and others involved, thus adding more levels to the experience of watching movies. By using established theory on documentary I’m trying to find distinctive features of ‘documentary on fiction’.
