Application of the probabilistic collocation method for an uncertainty analysis of a simple ocean model

01 1900 (has links)
This paper presents the probabilistic collocation method as a computationally efficient method for performing uncertainty analysis on large complex models such as those used in global climate change research. The collocation method is explained, and then the results of its application to a box model of ocean thermohaline circulation are presented. A comparison of the results of the collocation method with a traditional Monte Carlo simulation show that the collocation method gives a better approximation for the probability density function of the model's response with less than 20 model runs as compared with a Monte Carlo simulation of 5000 model runs. / Includes bibliographical references (p. 21). / Abstract in HTML and technical report in HTML and PDF available on the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change website (http://mit.edu/globalchange/www/).

Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 4 in the Chamber Version by Klaus Simon: Performance, Discussion, and Recording

January 2016 (has links)
abstract: The symphonies of Gustav Mahler (1860 - 1911) constitute an essential element of the orchestral repertory; they are therefore essential for young conductors to understand and for instrumentalists to play. Yet they are impractical in many school situations because they call for large orchestras. One solution to this problem is for the conductor to study the original, full version of the works as Mahler composed them, but to consider performing one of the reduced instrumentations now available. A smaller-scale version provides an opportunity for both the conductor and the instrumentalists to confront the challenges of performing Mahler's music and to explore Mahler's musical language and style in a more manageable setting. This project focuses on Mahler's Fourth Symphony, which is available in two reduced orchestrations: one by Erwin Stein made in 1921 and another by Klaus Simon from 2007. This paper is part of a larger project that includes a lecture-recital with commentary and a performance of the symphony in the more recent Simon arrangement (documented on video). It presents some background on Mahler's Fourth Symphony and compares the two reduced instrumentations to Mahler's original and to one another. Taken together, the parts of this project demonstrate an approach to learning and performing Mahler's music in a more accessible and practical setting for student conductors. / Dissertation/Thesis / Video recording on Lecture Recital: Mahler symphony No.4, Arr. Piano Concerto No. 4 in D Minor, Op. 70 by Anton Rubinstein: An analytical and historical study.

Peevey, Pui-King Cecilia 05 1900 (has links)
Anton Rubinstein was primarily recognized as one of the greatest pianists of his time. However, Rubinstein yearned for recognition as a composer and worked prodigiously to realize that goal. Unfortunately, Rubinstein's works were virtually unknown today. One of Rubinstein's finest compositions, the Piano Concerto in D Minor, op. 70 has been the most frequently performed. It is one of the first "Russian" concertos that was written by a Russian composer, and was performed in Russian concert halls instead of the homes of Russian aristocracy. It is also considered the most successful and harmonious convergent of various musical styles which influenced Rubinstein. However, there is no formal, detailed analysis of the Concerto in the entire music literature. Therefore, the main purpose of this dissertation is to provide a thorough study of the Concerto from an analytical and historical standpoint. Rubinstein was also one of the most eminent educators in Russia. The St. Petersburg Conservatory of Music, which Rubinstein helped found in 1862, has to this day produced some of the most influential musicians in Russia. The other purpose of this dissertation is to evaluate Rubinstein's role as music educator. An overview of Rubinstein's works for piano and orchestra offers a general idea of his compositional style. Literature on Anton Rubinstein currently available is limited. The two most valuable primary sources are Rubinstein's Autobiography of Anton Rubinstein, and Rubinstein's A Conversation on Music. Jeremy Norris's The Russian Piano Concerto, Volume I: The Nineteenth Century provides an insightful but short analysis on the Concerto. Sources discussing Anton Rubinstein as a pianist and an educator are relatively plentiful. Larry Sitsky's Anton Rubinstein: Annotated Catalog of Piano Works and Biography is an excellent work on Rubinstein's piano works. This dissertation includes four chapters: Chapter 1 - Introduction Chapter 2 - Rubinstein's works for piano and orchestra Chapter 3 - Piano Concerto No. 4 in D Minor, Op. 70 Chapter 4 - Conclusion.

Vyživovací povinnost v mezinárodním právu soukromém / Duty to support and maintain in private international law

Horáková, Monika January 2016 (has links)
RÉSUMÉ This master's thesis presents a detailed study on the topic of maintenance obligation in international private law, especially on maintenance obligation from parents towards children. This thesis examines the origins of maintenance order regulations, in particular we present analysis of "Haag Protocol of 23 November 2007 on the Law Applicable to Maintenance Obligations". This thesis also deals with "Council Regulation (EC) No 4/2009 of 18 December 2008 on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement of decisions and cooperation in matters relating to maintenance obligations" and how this protocol relates to the Haag Protocol of 23 November 2007. The first chapter examines the sources of the regulation of the term "maintenance obligation" in private international law, especially on conflict of law rules. The conflict of law rules are covered - on the state level by law "91/2012 Sb.", about international law private, on the european level in "Council Regulation (EC) No 4/2009 of 18 December 2008 on jurisdiction, applicable law, recognition and enforcement of decisions and cooperation in matters relating to maintenance obligations", and on the international level in Haag Protocol. The last sub- chapter of the first chapter covers the issues of law dealing with international protection of...

Cláudio Santoro: overview of his piano works and analysis of the fourth piano sonata

de Godoy, Mônica January 1994 (has links)
This document attempts to present the piano music of Claudio Santoro, a major twentieth century Brazilian composer. In order to illustrate the composer's background, the first chapter addresses briefly the situation of Nationalist music from the beginning of the second decade of this century to the 1940s, when Claudio Santoro came into the Brazilian scene. A general discussion about the Modernismo movement initiated by Mario de Andrade and the opposed views to the later school by the group Música Viva - headed by Hans Joachim Koellreuter - illustrates the politics and sociology in the music scene in Brazil during the first decades of the twentieth century. A biography, focusing mostly in a personal account by the composer, serves to illustrate Santoro's family background, environment, education and struggles to develop into a first class musician. The compilation of Santoro's piano music and an overview of its characteristics, introduces pianists to this Brazilian composer, whose body of works include mostly orchestral music. Although not a pianist himself, he composed several valuable piano works worthy of the repertoire. The Fourth Sonata represents one of Santoro's most popular piano works. The analysis of this work focuses on clarifying how the structure may be organized and how the chromatic idiom supports Santoro's deceptive tonal goals.
