PSO-based Fractal Image Compression and Active Contour Model

In this dissertation, particle swarm optimization (PSO) is utilized for fractal image compression (FIC) and active contour model (ACM). The dissertation is divided into two parts. The first part is concerned with the FIC and the second part with ACM. FIC is promising both theoretically and practically for image compression. However, since the encoding speed of the traditional full search method is very time-consuming, FIC with full search is unsuitable for real-time applications. In this dissertation, several novel PSO-based approaches incorporating the edge property of the image blocks are proposed to speedup the encoder and preserve the image quality. Instead of the full search, a direction map is built according to the edge type of the image blocks, which directs the particles in the swarm to regions consisting of candidates of higher similarity. Therefore, the searching space is reduced and the speedup can be achieved. Also, since the strategy is performed according to the edge property, better visual effect can be preserved. Experimental results show that the visual-based particle swarm optimization speeds up the encoder 125 times faster with only 0.89 dB decay of image quality in comparison to the full search method. The second part of the dissertation is concerned with the active contour model for automatic object boundary identification. In the traditional methods for ACM, each control point searches its new position in a small nearby window. Consequently, the boundary concavities cannot be searched accurately. Some improvements have been made in the past to enlarge the searching space, yet they are still time-consuming. To overcome these drawbacks, a novel multi-population PSO technique is adopted in this dissertation to enhance the concavity searching capability and reduce the search time but in a larger searching window. In the proposed scheme, to each control point in the contour there is a corresponding swarm of particles with the best swarm particle as the new control point. The proposed optimizer not only inherits the spirit of the original PSO in each swarm but also shares information of the surrounding swarms. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can improve the search of object concavities without extra computation time.

A 11 Bit/10MSamples/s CMOS Switched-Current Sigma-Delta Modulator With Active Amplifier Integrator

In this thesis, a switched-current integrator with active amplifier feedback and dummy switch is proposed to increase the operation speed and reduce the non-ideal effects in traditional switched-current circuit. The active amplifier is designed in low gain and high bandwidth so that the oscillation can be avoided. We improve the operation speed and transmission error by the active amplifier feedback and reduce the CFT error by the dummy switch so that high resolution can be achieved. Then we apply the proposed integrator to the switched-current sigma-delta modulator. The sigma-delta modulator is simulated using TSMC 0.35£gm CMOS process with 3.3V power supply. We obtain 67dB PSNR, 66dB dynamic range(DR), and 40KHz bandwidth. The sampling frequency is 10.24MHz, the power supply is 3.3V and the power consumption is 19mW.

OMT-A : An Extension of OMT to Model Active Rules

<p>Today there are commercially available databases with active features, i.e. active mechanisms are available for development of information systems. But the usage of active mechanisms is low in practice. This is due to the insufficient methodological support in analysis and design for developing ECA rule based software. It has been proposed that one of the most suitable ways to tackle this problem is not to develop new methods but to extend existing methodologies.</p><p>In this thesis an extension of the Object Modeling Technique (OMT) is developed, called OMT-A, which is able to model active rules. The Active Database Management System Manifesto is used as a base for the refinements. OMT-A also supports an extensive set of event operators. Although the refined notation and the new, recommended steps, it is still possible to use OMT-A as if it is the original OMT.</p><p>OMT-A is compared with OMT and two other extensions of OMT. The comparison revealed some interesting differences, e.g. to what extent OMT has been changed. It also turned out that OMT-A is the only one of the three refined versions having an explicit focus on the dynamic modeling, which is an interesting contribution of this work</p>

Verifying transformations between timed automata specifications and ECA rules

<p>Event-triggered real-time systems are desirable to use in environments where the arrival of events are hard to predict. The semantics of an event-triggered system is well mapped to the behaviour of an active database management system (ADBMS), specified using event-condition-action (ECA) rules. The benefits of using an active database, such as persistent data storage, concurrency control, timely response to event occurrences etc. highlights the need for a development method for event-triggered real-time systems using active databases.</p><p>However, there are problems left to be solved before an ADBMS can be used with confidence in real-time environments. The behaviour of a real-time system must be predictable, which implies a thorough analysed specification with e.g. specified worst case execution times. The predictability requirement is an obstacle for specifying real-time systems as ECA rules, since the rules may affect each other in many intricate ways which makes them hard to analyse. The interaction between the rules implies that it is not enough to verify the correctness of single rules; an analysis must consider the behaviour of the entire rule set.</p><p>In this dissertation, an approach for developing active applications is presented. A method is examined which starts with an analysed high-level timed automaton specification and transforms the specified behaviour into an implicitly analysed rule set. For this method to be useful, the transformation from timed automata to rules must preserve the exact behaviour of the high level specification. Hence, the aim of this dissertation is to verify transformations between timed automaton specifications and ECA rules.</p><p>The contribution of this project is a structured set of general transformations between timed automata specifications and ECA rules. The transformations include both transformations of small timed automata constructs for deterministic environments and formally verified timed automata patterns specifying the behaviour of composite events in recent and chronicle context.</p>
