On the Analytic Assessment of the Impact of Traffic Correlation on Queues in Continuous Time Domain

No / Given only the traffic correlations of counts and intervals, a Batch Renewal Arrival Process (BRAP) is completely determined, as the least biased choice and thus, it provides the analytic means to construct suitable traffic models for the study of queueing systems independently of any other traffic characteristics. In this context, the BRAP and the Batch Markovian Arrival Process (BMAP) are employed in the continuous time domain towards the analysis of the stable BRAP/GE/1 and BMAP/GE/1 queues with infinite capacity, single servers and generalized exponential (GE) service times. Novel closed form expressions for the steady state probabilities of these queues are obtained, based on the embedded Markov chains (EMCs) technique and the matrix-geometric (M-G) method, respectively. Moreover, the stable GEsGGeo/GE/1 queue with GE-type service times and a GEsGGeo BRAP consisting of bursty GE-type batch interarrival times and a shifted generalized geometric (sGGeo) batch size distribution is adopted to assess analytically the combined adverse effects of varying degrees of correlation of intervals between individual arrivals and the burstiness of service times upon the typical quality of service (QoS) measure of the mean queue length (MQL). Moreover, a comprehensive experimental study is carried out to investigate numerically the relative impact of count and interval traffic correlations as well as other traffic characteristics upon the performance of stable BRAP/GE/1 and BMAP/GE/1 queues. It is suggested via a conjecture that the BRAP/GE/1 queue is likely to yield pessimistic performance metrics in comparison to those of the stable BMAP/GE/1 queues under the worst case scenario (i.e., a worst case scenario) of the same positive count and interval traffic correlations arising from long sojourn in each phase.

To θέμα του εντοπισμού των κινητών τηλεφώνων έχει τραβήξει την προσοχή τα τελευταία χρόνια εξαιτίας των απαιτήσεων της Ομοσπονδιακής Επιτροπής Επικοινωνιών για το Enhanced 911 η οποία είναι μια υπηρεσία συναγερμού. Τα ασύρματα συστήματα επικοινωνίας 3ης γενιάς ηταν τα πρώτα που υιοθέτησαν στρατηγικές εύρεσης θέσης στα στάνταρντ τους. Στην διαδικασία της εύρεσης της θέσης υπάρχουν 3 βασικές κατηγορίες μετρήσεων που μπορούμε να χρησιμοποιήσουμε. Η πρώτη εκτιμά το κινητό βασίζοντας τις μετρήσεις στην λαμβανόμενη ισχύ σήματος. Η δεύτερη κάνει χρήση των χρόνων άφιξης ή της διαφοράς των χρόνων άφιξης στους σταθμούς βάσης. Η τρίτη κατηγορία έχει να κάνει με τις γωνίες άφιξης στους σταθμούς βάσης. Όλες οι παραπάνω κατηγορίες μετρήσεων υποβαθμίζονται έντονα από την NLOS διάδοση. Η απουσία ενός LOS μονοπατιού μπορεί να βλάψει σημαντικά την εκτίμηση της πραγματικής θέσης του κινητού. Αντικείμενο της παρούσας διπλωματικής είναι η συγκριτική αξιολόγηση και μελέτη κάποιων δημοφιλών τεχνικών εντοπισμού θέσης απλών και υβριδικών κάτω από διαφορετικά ΝLOS περιβάλλοντα και σε συνδυασμό με άλλες εξίσου σημαντικές παραμετρους όπως ειναι το διαθέσιμο πλήθος σταθμών βάσης σε μια περιοχή, η γεωμετρία ή με άλλα λόγια η θέση του κινητού σε σχέση με τους σταθμους βάσης. Προτείνεται επίσης και μια υβριδική τεχνική για την αντιμετώπιση των παραπάνω καταστρεπτικών επιπτώσεων του NLOS φαινομένου. / The problem of mobile location estimation has recently drawn attention due to Federal Communications Commission (FCC) demands of Enhanced-911 (E911) emergency service. Third Generation (3G) wireless systems were the first to adopt location estimation techniques into their standards. There are three basic types of measurements that can be used for location estimation. The first type includes Received Signal Strength measurements. The second type uses Time of Arrival or Time Difference of Arrival measurements of the signal to the base stations. The third type deals with Angle of Arrival measurements of the received signal. The subject of this work is the comparative evaluation and study of certain popular, simple and hybrid location estimation techniques, under different NLOS environments and in conjunction with other equally important parameters such as the number of available base stations, the geometry of the problem and the position of the mobile relative to the base stations. A hybrid method is also suggested for mitigating the destructive consequences of the NLOS effect.

Le système Cospas-Sarsat est un système de recherche et de sauvetage à l’échelle mondiale qui fonctionne à l’aide de satellites en orbite basse et de satellites en orbite géostationnaire. La constellation de satellites actuelle est en cours de remplacement par des satellites en orbite moyenne qui couvrent de plus grandes zones de la surface de la Terre permettant des alertes quasi instantanées. L’objectif de cette thèse est d’étudier les performances de localisation de ce nouveau système, qui a été nommé système MEOSAR (Medium Earth Orbit Search and Rescue). Nous étudions d’abord la qualité de la liaison entre la balise de détresse, le satellite, et la station de réception au sol à l’aide d’un bilan de liaison. Ensuite, nous proposons un modèle de signal basé sur des fonctions sigmoïdes afin de modéliser les transitions douces du signal de détresse. Pour ce modèle, les performances de localisation (en terme de bornes de Cramér-Rao et de la variance d’estimateurs) sont étudiées pour l’estimation de position de la balise, et pour l’estimation de différents paramètres, y compris le temps d’arrivée, la fréquence d’arrivée et la durée du symbole. Ensuite, nous étudions l’impact de l’ajout d’information a priori sur la période symbole et sur le temps de montée du signal, qui proviennent des tolérances autorisées sur les spécifications des balises de détresse. Nous étudions également l’erreur introduite par l’ajout de bruit de phase caractéristique des oscillateurs des balises, et nous considérons l’amélioration de l’estimation de position en prenant en compte les multiples émissions de la balise de détresse. Finalement, les performances de localisation du système MEOSAR sont données pour les balises de détresse de deuxième génération, qui sont en cours de développement, et qui utilisent une modulation avec étalement de spectre. / Cospas-Sarsat is an international search and rescue system that operates using low-orbit satellites and geostationary satellites. The current satellite constellation is being replaced by medium Earth orbit satellites which will cover larger areas of the surface of the Earth, permitting almost instantaneous alerts. The objective of this thesis is to study the localization performance of this new system, named MEOSAR (Medium Earth Orbit Search and Rescue). We first study the quality of the link between the beacon, the satellite and the ground receiving station through a link budget. Then, we propose a signal model based on sigmoidal functions to model the smooth transitions of the distress signal. For this model, the localization performance (in terms of Cramér-Rao bounds and estimator variances) is studied for the estimation of the beacon position and for different parameters including the time of arrival, the frequency of arrival and the symbol width. Then, we study the impact of adding prior information on the symbol width and the signal rise time, which are constructed from the allowed tolerances on the beacon specifications. We also investigate the error introduced by the addition of oscillator phase noise, and we show how the position estimation can be improved by taking into account multiple emissions of the beacon. Finally, the localization performance of the MEOSAR system is studied for second generation beacons, which are being developed using spread spectrum modulation.

Dans un environnement intérieur, le problème de l'extraction du composant l'Angle de Arrivée de la Line-of-Sight entre un émetteur et un récepteur Wi-Fi utilisant un lien SIMO est la principale préoccupation de cette thèse. Un des principaux défis à relever est dû au riche canal multipath que les environnements intérieurs apprécient. C'est ainsi parce que multipath résulte du fait que le canal de propagation se compose de plusieurs obstacles et réflecteurs. Ainsi, le signal reçu arrive comme un ensemble imprévisible de réflexions et / ou d'ondes directes avec son degré d'atténuation et de retard. D'autres défis sont la limitation des ressources, telles que le nombre d'antennes, la bande passante disponible et le rapport Signal / Bruit; sans parler des «imperfections» Wi-Fi, telles que les disparités de gain / phase entre les antennes et les problèmes de synchronisation entre l'émetteur et le récepteur. Dans cette thèse, notre objectif principal est de mettre en place un système en temps réel qui pourrait mesurer l'angle entre un émetteur et un récepteur en présence de tous les défis. En particulier, nous avons pris en compte tous les facteurs qui perturbent le problème d'estimation de l'angle articulaire et du délai et formulé un modèle de système en conséquence. Ces facteurs sont les suivants: Sampling Frequency offset (SFO), Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO), et Phase/Delay offsets à chaque antenne. Pour compenser l'efficacité de ces facteurs critiques, nous proposons une méthode d'étalonnage optimale pour compenser tous leurs effets. Cette thèse comprendra également d'autres méthodes théoriques qui doivent faire face au problème d'estimation de l'angle d'arrivée, à partir du point de vue de la compression et du traitement du signal. / In an indoor environment, the problem of extracting the Angle-of-Arrival of the Line-of-Sight component between a transmitter and Wi-Fi receiver using a SIMO link is the main concern of this thesis. One main challenge in doing so is due to the rich multipath channel that indoor environments enjoy. This is so because multipath results from the fact that the propagation channel consists of several obstacles and reflectors. Thus, the received signal arrives as an unpredictable set of reflections and/or direct waves each with its own degree of attenuation and delay. Other challenges are limitation of resources, such as number of antennas, available bandwidth, and Signal-to-Noise-Ratio; not to mention the Wi-Fi ”imperfections”, such as gain/phase mismatches between antennas and synchronisation issues between transmitter and receiver. In this thesis, our main focus is implementing a real-time system that could measure the angle between a transmitter and receiver in the presence of all challenges. In particular, we have taken into account all factors that perturb the Joint Angle and Delay estimation problem and formulated a system model accordingly. These factors are: Sampling Frequency offset (SFO), Carrier Frequency Offset (CFO), Phase and Delay offsets at each antenna. To compensate for the effect of these critical factors, we propose an offline calibration method to compensate for all their effects. This thesis will also include other theoretical methods that have to deal with Angle-of-Arrival Estimation problem from compressed sensing and signal processing point of views.

Design and Implementation of System Components for Radio Frequency Based Asset Tracking Devices to Enhance Location Based Services. Study of angle of arrival techniques, effects of mutual coupling, design of an angle of arrival algorithm, design of a novel miniature reconfigurable antenna optimised for wireless communication systems

The angle of arrival estimation of multiple sources plays a vital role in the field of array signal processing as MIMO systems can be employed at both the transmitter and the receiver end and the system capacity, reliability and throughput can be significantly increased by using array signal processing. Almost all applications require accurate direction of arrival (DOA) estimation to localize the sources of the signals. Another important parameter of localization systems is the array geometry and sensor design which can be application specific and is used to estimate the DOA. In this work, various array geometries and arrival estimation algorithms are studied and then a new scheme for multiple source estimation is proposed and evaluated based on the performance of subspace and non-subspace decomposition methods. The proposed scheme has shown to outperform the conventional Multiple Signal Classification (MUSIC) estimation and Bartlett estimation techniques. The new scheme has a better performance advantage at low and high signal to noise ratio values (SNRs). The research work also studies different array geometries for both single and multiple incident sources and proposes a geometry which is cost effective and efficient for 3, 4, and 5 antenna array elements. This research also considers the shape of the ground plane and its effects on the angle of arrival estimation and in addition it shows how the mutual couplings between the elements effect the overall estimation and how this error can be minimised by using a decoupling matrix. At the end, a novel miniaturised multi element reconfigurable antenna to represent the receiver base station is designed and tested. The antenna radiation patterns in the azimuth angle are almost omni-directional with linear polarisation. The antenna geometry is uniplanar printed logspiral with striplines feeding network and biased components to improve the impedance bandwidth. The antenna provides the benefit of small size, and re-configurability and is very well suited for the asset tracking applications.

Optimal control based method for design and analysis of continuous descent arrivals

Continuous Descent Arrival (CDA) is a procedure where aircraft descend, at or near idle thrust, from their cruise altitude to their Final Approach Fix without leveling off. By eliminating inefficient leveling off at low altitude, CDA provides benefits such as fuel savings, flight time savings, and the significant noise reduction near airports, but the usage of CDAs has been limited in low traffic condition due to difficulty in the separation management. For the successful CDA without degradation of the runway throughput, air traffic controllers should know the performance bound of the CDA trajectory and control the time of arrival for each aircraft, which is interpreted as Required Time of Arrival (RTA) from the aircraft standpoint. This thesis proposes a novel trajectory optimization methodology to meet RTA constraint. The CDA trajectory optimization problem in the flight management system is modeled as a path constrained optimal control problem of switched dynamical system. A sequential method that performs mode sequence estimation and parameter optimization, sequentially, is proposed to solve this problem. By analyzing the relaxed optimal solution with simplified dynamics, a computationally efficient algorithm to find the optimal switching structure is proposed and applied for the mode sequence estimation. This thesis also proposes a performance-bound analysis methodology using optimal control techniques to help controllers make a feasible schedule for CDA operations at a meter fix. The feasible time range analysis for a wide variety of aircraft is performed by using the proposed methodology. Based on the analysis result, a single flight time strategy is proposed for the application of CDA in high traffic conditions. The simulation with real traffic data has been shown that the single flight time strategy, combined with the proposed fixed RTA trajectory optimization, guarantees the conflict free CDA operation.

This telemetry system is designed to measure the initial performance of an explosive package under flight environment conditions, transmitting data from up to 64 sensors. It features high speed, accurate time resolution (10 ns) and has the ability to complete transmission of data before the system is destroyed by the explosion. In order to affect the resources and performance of a flight delivery vehicle as little as possible, the system is designed such that physical size, power requirements, and antenna demands are as small as possible.

PRODUCTION SEQUENCING AND STABILITY ANALYSIS OF A JUST-IN-TIME SYSTEM WITH SEQUENCE DEPENDENT SETUPS

Just-In-Time (JIT) production systems is a popular area for researchers but real-world issues such as sequence dependent setups are often overlooked. This research investigates an approach for determining stability and an approach for mixed product sequencing in production systems with sequence dependent setups and buffer thresholds which signal replenishment of a given buffer. Production systems in this research operate under JIT pull production principles by producing only when demand exists and idle when no demand exists. In the first approach, an iterative method is presented to determine stability for a multi-product production system that operates with replenishment signals and may have sequence dependent setups. In this method, a network of nodes representing machine states and arcs representing the buffer inventory levels is used to find a stable trajectory for the production system via an iterative procedure. The method determines suitable buffer levels for the production system that ensure that a trajectory originating from any point within a buffer region will always map to a point contained on another buffer region for all future mappings. This iterative method for determining the stability of a production system was implemented using an algorithm to calculate the buffer inventory regions for all arcs in a given arc-node network. The algorithm showed favorable results for two and three product systems in which sequence dependent setups may exist. In the second approach, a product sequencing algorithm determines a product sequence for a production system based on system parameters – setup times, buffer levels, usage rates, production rates, etc. The algorithm selects a product by evaluating the goodness of each product that has reached the replenishment threshold at the current time. The algorithm also incorporates a lookahead function that calculates the goodness for some time interval into the future. The lookahead function considers all branches of the tree of potential sequences to prevent the sequence from travelling down a dead-end branch in which the system will be unable to avoid a depleted buffer. The sequencing algorithm allows the user to weight the five terms of the goodness equations (current and lookahead) to control the behavior of the sequence.
