Návrh induceru před oběžným kolem odstředivého čerpadla / The design of an induser in front of the impeller

The main objective of the thesis is to verify the hydraulic inducer designs and to determine its effect on the cavitation characteristics of the pump. To increase the suction capability and cavitation resistance, the inducer is placed in front of the impeller centrifugal pump. Its role is to protect the impeller against the cavitation. The literary part of the thesis analyzes the issue of cavitation, its origin, development and termination of the cavitation bubble with so-called implosion. Special attention is devoted to describtion of cavitation effect occuring at the hydrodynamic pumps. In the theoretical part, the author is then dealing with the general principles and so far used approaches to the inducer design. The practical part of the thesis describes the process and the derivation of own designs of cylindrical inducer. The aim of the used, unconventional approaches to the inducer design is to achieve a constant pressure field and specific energy of the inducer design output. Partial variants of inducer blades design geometry are tested by the controlled calculation with CFD.

Reduction of rolling contact fatigue through the control of the wheel wear shape

Heavy haul railway operations permit the transport of huge volumes at lower cost than other modes of transport. The low cost can only be sustained if the maintenance costs associated with such railway operations are minimised. The maintenance costs are mainly driven by wheel and rail damage in the form of wear and rolling contact fatigue (RCF). Low wear rates in the wheel-rail interface have resulted in an increase in the prevalence of rail RCF, thereby increasing rail maintenance costs. The aim of this study is to develop an approach to reduce rail RCF on South Africa’s iron ore export line by managing the worn wheel shape. This approach is developed by evaluating wheel and rail profile shapes that contribute the most to RCF initiation, studying the influence of suspension stiffness and rail profile changes as well as a redesign of the wheel profile. The influence of wheel and rail profile shape features on the initiation of rolling contact fatigue (RCF) cracks was evaluated based on the results of multibody vehicle dynamics simulations. The damage index and surface fatigue index were used as two damage parameters to assess the influence of the different features. The damage parameters showed good agreement to one another and to in-field observations. The wheel and rail profile shape features showed a correlation to the predicted RCF damage. The RCF damage proved to be most sensitive to the position of hollow wear and thus bogie tracking. RCF initiation and crack growth can be reduced by eliminating unwanted shape features through maintenance and design and by improving bogie tracking. Two potential mitigation measures had been adapted from those published in literature to reduce RCF. The mitigation measures involved changes in suspension stiffness to spread wheel wear across the tread and the use of gauge corner relief rail profiles. These mitigation measures were evaluated by means of multibody dynamics and wear maintenance costs. These mitigation measures, however, did not prove to be successful in reducing RCF initiation while maintaining a low wheel wear rate. The current operating conditions on South Africa’s iron ore line, although still not optimal overall, were found to be better in terms of their wear and RCF performance than the two proposed RCF mitigation measures. Based on the finding of the study on two RCF mitigation measures it was recommended that a conformal wheel profile be developed to spread the wheel wear across the tread to reduce the occurrence and propagation of RCF cracks, while still maintaining low wheel wear rates. A comparative study of this new wheel profile design and the current wheel profile design was therefore performed using multibody dynamics simulation together with numerical wheel wear and RCF predictions. The advantages of the conformal wheel profile design were illustrated by evaluating the worn shape and resulting kinematic behaviour of the conformal design. The conformal design had a steadier equivalent conicity progression and a smaller conicity range compared with the current wheel profile design over the wheel’s wear life. The combination of a conformal wheel profile design with 2 mm hollow wear and inadequate adherence to grinding tolerances often result in two-point contact, thereby increasing the probability of RCF initiation. The conformal wheel profile design was shown to have many wear and RCF benefits compared with the current wheel profile design. However, implementation of such a conformal wheel profile must be accompanied by improved rail grinding practices to ensure rail profile compliance. Based on these findings an approach is proposed where the conformal wheel profile design together with improved compliance of the in-service rail profiles to the target rail profile are implemented. Unparticle physics is the physics of a hidden sector which is conformal in the infrared and coupled to the Standard Model. The concept of unparticle physics was introduced by Howard Georgi in 2007 and has since then received a lot of attention, including many studies of its phenomenology in different situations. After a review of the necessary background material, the implications of the self-interactions of the unparticle sector for LHC physics is studied. More specifically, analyses of four-body final states consisting of photons and leptons are performed. The results are upper bounds on the total cross sections as well as distributions of transverse momentum.

Aspects of higher spin Hamiltonian dynamics: Conformal geometry, duality and charges

Nous avons investigué les propriétés des champs de jauge de spin élevé libres à travers une étude de divers aspects de leur dynamique hamiltonienne. Pour des champs se propageant sur un espace-temps plat, les contraintes issues de l'analyse hamiltonienne de ces théories de jauge ont été identifiées et résolues par l'introduction de prépotentiels, dont l'invariance de jauge comprend, de façon intrigante, à la fois des difféomorphismes linéarisés généralisés et des transformations d'échelle de Weyl généralisées et linéarisées. Cela a motivé notre étude systématique des invariants conformes pour les spins élevés. Les invariants correspondants ont été construits à l'aide du tenseur de Cotton, dont nous avons établi les propriétés essentielles (symétrie, conservation, trace nulle; invariance, complétude). Avec ces outils géométriques, l'analyse hamiltonienne a pu être complétée et une action du premier ordre écrite en termes des prépotentiels. Nous avons constaté que cette action possédait une invariance manifeste par dualité électromagnétique; cette invariance, combinée à l'invariance de jauge des prépotentiels, fixe d'ailleurs uniquement l'action. En outre, de façon générale, cette action s'est révélée être exactement celle obtenue à travers une réécriture des équations du mouvement des spins élevés comme des conditions d'auto-dualité tordue (non manifestement covariantes).Avec un intérêt pour les extensions supersymétriques, nous avons amorcé la généralisation de cette étude aux champs fermioniques. Le champ de masse nulle libre de spin 5/2 a été soumis à la même analyse, et son prépotentiel s'est révélé partager l'invariance de jauge conforme déjà observée dans le cas bosonique général. Le supermultiplet incorporant les spins 2 et 5/2 a ensuite été considéré, et une symétrie rigide de son action, combinant une transformation de dualité électromagnétique du spin 2 avec une transformation de chiralité du spin 5/2 a été construite pour commuter avec la supersymétrie. Dans une autre direction, nous avons étudié les propriétés d'un champ tensoriel chiral de symétrie mixte dans un espace-temps plat à six dimensions: une (2,2)-forme. Son analyse hamiltonienne a été réalisée, des prépotentiels introduits et l'action de premier ordre obtenue s'est encore une fois révélée être la même que celle obtenue à travers une réécriture des équations du mouvement comme des conditions d'auto-chiralité (non manifestement covariante).Finalement, nous nous sommes penchés sur les charges de surface des champs fermioniques et bosoniques de spin élevé se propageant sur un espace-temps à courbure constante. Cela a été réalisé par une analyse hamiltonienne de ces systèmes, les contraintes étant identifiées aux générateurs des transformations de jauge. Injectant dans ces générateurs des valeurs des paramètres des transformations de jauge correspondant à des transformations impropres de jauge (imposant une réelle variation physique sur les champs) a ensuite permis d'évaluer la valeur de ces générateurs pour des champs résolvant les équations du mouvement: elle s'est bien révélée finie et non-nulle, constituant les charges de surface de ces théories. / Doctorat en Sciences / info:eu-repo/semantics/nonPublished

Study of Inkjet Printing as an Ultra-Low-Cost Antenna Prototyping Method and Its Application to Conformal Wraparound Antennas for Sounding Rocket Sub-Payload

Inkjet printing is an attractive patterning technology that has received tremendous interest as a mass fabrication method for a variety of electronic devices due to its manufacturing exibility and low-cost feature. However, the printing facilities that are being used, especially the inkjet printer, are very expensive. This thesis introduces an extremely cost-friendly inkjet printing method using a printer that costs less than $100. In order to verify its reliability, linearly and circularly polarized (CPd) planar and conformal microstrip antennas were fabricated using this printing method, and their measurement results were compared with copper microstrip antennas. The result shows that the printed microstrip antennas have similar performances to those of the copper antennas except for lower efficiency. The effects of the conductivity and thickness of the ink layer on the antenna properties were studied, and it is found that the conductivity is the main factor affecting the radiation efficiency, though thicker ink yields more effective antennas. This thesis also presents the detailed antenna design for a sub-payload. The sub-payload is a cylindrical structure with a diameter of six inches and a height of four inches. It has four booms coming out from the surface, which are used to measure the variations of the energy flow into the upper atmosphere in and around the aurora. The sub-payload has two types of antennas: linearly polarized (LPd) S-band antennas and right-hand circularly polarized (RHCPd) GPS antennas. Each type of antenna has various requirements to be fully functional for specific research tasks. The thesis includes the design methods of each type of antenna, challenges that were confronted, and the possible solutions that were proposed. As a practical application, the inkjet printing method was conveniently applied in validating some of the antenna designs.
