Os projetos de carrocerias veiculares atuais procuram desenvolver estruturas leves, seja para reduzir o consumo de combustível, no caso dos motores de combustão interna, seja para maior autonomia de bateria, no caso dos veículos elétricos e híbridos. Redução no consumo de combustível significa redução na emissão de poluentes. As estruturas precisam ser leves, mas cada vez mais resistentes e rígidas a fim de proporcionar máximo conforto e segurança aos ocupantes. Estas premissas têm levado ao contínuo desenvolvimento dos materiais. No caso dos aços, um dos processos que tem permitido a melhora significativa das propriedades mecânicas é a estampagem a quente. Nos últimos anos, as peças estampadas a quente têm ocupado lugar de destaque na estrutura das carrocerias veiculares por estarem em sintonia com as demandas mencionadas. Há muitas pesquisas em curso para esta tecnologia, seja nos materiais, nos meios de produção, nos revestimentos e em aplicações. O aço mais utilizado neste processo, 22MnB5, também apresenta o chamado efeito bake hardening; a tensão de escoamento é aumentada após tratamento térmico realizado em temperaturas próximas a 200 °C. Neste trabalho, visando à melhoria nas propriedades mecânicas, amostras foram tratadas termicamente na faixa de temperatura supracitada. Após isso, dados obtidos de ensaios mecânicos foram inseridos em programas de simulação de impacto lateral cujo resultado foi a redução na intrusão na célula de sobrevivência. O efeito bake hardening também propiciou um aumento na absorção da energia de impacto em teste estático feito com barras de proteção lateral. O mecanismo metalúrgico envolvido no fenômeno, devido à difusão de intersticiais foi evidenciado no ensaio de atrito interno. / The current auto body projects seek to build light structures whose immediate impact is in the reduction in fuel consumption of internal combustion engines or in longer battery life for electric and hybrid vehicles. Reduction in fuel consumption means reduced emissions. The structures need to be lightweight, but increasingly resistant to provide maximum comfort and safety to the occupants. These demands led to the continuous development of new materials. In the case of the steels hot stamping has allowed significant improvement in the mechanical properties. In recent years, hot stamped parts took prominent place in the structure of auto bodies to be in line with the mentioned demands. There are a lot of researches lines for this technology: materials, modes of production, coatings and applications. The most commonly used steel in this process, 22MnB5, also exhibits the bake hardening effect: its yield strength is increased after thermal treatment at temperatures close to 200 °C. To verify this improvement in the mechanical properties, samples were thermally treated. After that, data obtained from mechanical tests were inserted into side-crash simulation programs that resulted in a reduction in intrusion in the passengers compartment. The bake hardening effect also provided an increase in the absorption of the impact energy in a static test done with door beam. The metallurgical mechanism involved in the phenomenon, due to the movement of interstitial was evidenced in the internal friction test.

<p>Commercial alloys are continuously developed to improve their performance. Therefore it is important to develop new optimisation software, which could be used in development of new materials or in materials selection. In this study the mechanical properties which are important in materials selection in mechanical design are investigated. Two types of materials are analysed, aluminium alloys and stainless steels but focus will be on the aluminium alloys.</p><p>Thermodynamic analysis has been used to evaluate the effect of the microstructure. Solid solution hardening has been successfully modelled for both aluminium alloys and stainless steels and follows the theories by Labusch and Nabarro. The precipitation hardening is most dominant for the hardenable aluminium alloys, but the non-hardenable alloys also increase their strength from precipitation hardening. The non-hardenable alloys are divided into tempers, which differ in the amount of strain hardening. This has also been modelled successfully.</p><p>Combining these fundamental results with multiple regression, models for mechanical properties have been created. Separate models are developed for wrought aluminium alloys and stainless steels. For the aluminium alloys this includes the solid solution hardening and the precipitation hardening. For the stainless steels the thickness, nitrogen content and ferrite content are included together with the solid solution hardening.</p>

Contact Laws for Large Deformation Unconfined and Confined Compression of Spherical Plastic Particles with Power-law HardeningMuhammad B Shahin (10716399) 28 April 2021 (has links)
Confined particulate systems, particularly powder compacts, are widely used in various applications in industries such as pharmaceutical, automotive, agriculture, and energy production. Due to their extensive applications, characterization of these materials is of great importance for optimizing their performance and manufacturing processes. Modeling approaches capable of capturing the heterogeneity and complex behavior are effective at predicting the macroscopic behavior of granular systems. These modeling approaches utilize information about the microstructure evolution of these materials during compaction processes at the mesoscale (particle-scale). Using these types of modeling depend on accurate contact formulation between inter-particle contacts. The challenge comes in formulating these contact models that accurately predict force-area-deformation relationships. In this work, contact laws are presented for elastic-ideally plastic particles and plastic particles with power-law hardening under unconfined (simple compression) and confined (die and hydrostatic compaction) compression. First, material properties for a set of finite element simulations are obtained using space-filling design. The finite element simulations are used for verification and building an analytical framework of the contact radius and contact pressure which allows for efficient determination of the contact force. Semi-mechanistic contact laws are built for elastic-ideally plastic spherical particles that depend on material properties and loading configuration. Then, rigid-plastic assumption is used to modify the contact laws to consider power-law hardening effects while keeping loading configuration dependency. Finally, after building and verifying the contact laws, they are used to estimate hardening properties, contact radius evolution, and stress response of micro-crystalline cellulose particles under different loading configurations using experimental data from simple compression.

The Effects of Contaminants on the Gas Nitriding of Nitralloy-135Liu, Wendi 24 November 2008 (has links)
"Surface contamination during the heat treatment process can greatly affect the quality of the heat treated parts. Although cleaning the post-heat treated parts is considered a value added process in heat treatment, cleaning parts prior to heat treatment is also important and can influence the outcome of subsequent processes. A series of experiments has been designed to determine the effects of the surface contaminants on nitriding. Nitralloy-135 steel was selected to evaluate the cleaning methods and the effects on the result of subsequent nitriding process. The samples were contaminated with a variety of contaminants, including rust preventive oil, cutting fluid and rust. The contaminated samples were cleaned using either acid or alkaline cleaner. Both cleaned and contaminated samples were nitride in the furnace. To determine the effect of contaminants on gas nitriding, weight gain and the surface hardness were measured. Nitrogen flux was also calculated. The results show that the acid cleaning effectively removes the rust layer. Rusted parts had lower nitrogen absorption than that of the cleaned samples. The parts contaminated by the oil did not reveal any effect on the nitrogen uptake. The surface hardness (Rc) did not show a significant difference between the heavily rusted sample and the clean sample. It has been observed that the nitrogen flux is smaller due to the rust layer on the heavily rusted samples."

O presente trabalho tem como objetivo mostrar a influência do recozimento na recuperação e recristalização de tiras de aço baixo carbono dobradas por deformação a frio. Muitas indústrias que produzem peças a partir de dobramento a frio, buscam constantemente garantir a qualidade de seus produtos. Isto se torna um desafio a partir do momento que se considera a diversidade do formato das dobras exigidas. Através de observações práticas, o que se vê é que, com o objetivo de facilitar o processo, muitos profissionais são induzidos a acreditar que simplesmente aquecendo o material, o trabalho será facilitado e garantirá a qualidade do produto final. Assim, independente do tipo do aço e/ou nível de encruamento, os parâmetros de temperatura utilizados são determinados, na sua grande maioria, de forma empírica, sem critérios estabelecidos, ou seja, em muitos casos, os valores de temperatura tendem a ser os mesmos. Como a grande maioria de peças produzidas na indústria submetida a deformação é em aço baixo carbono, este foi escolhido como material para a fabricação das amostras utilizadas no experimento. Estas amostras foram submetidas a diversos graus de dobramento a frio e aplicação de recozimento para recristalização com variação controlada dos parâmetros. Através da intercomparação das amostras e com aplicação de diversos ensaios foram caracterizados a dureza, estrutura metalográfica, tamanho médio do precipitado, bem como a correlação entre as condições de recozimento versus o nível de recuperação do encruamento. Através dos dados obtidos, observou-se a importância de definir de forma científica os parâmetros de aquecimento para a recristalização, sob pena de prejudicar as características das peças. / This work aims to show the influence of annealing on the recovery and recrystallization of low carbon steel strips bent by cold forming. Many industries that produce parts from cold bending, constantly seek to ensure the quality of their products. This becomes a challenge from the moment that one considers the diversity of the shape of folds required. Through practical observation, we can see that, in order to facilitate the process, many professionals are led to believe that simply heating the material, the work will be facilitated and ensure final product quality. Thus, regardless of the type of steel and / or level of work hardening, the parameters used in temperature are determined, mostly, empirically, without established criteria, ie, in most cases, the temperature values tend to be same. As the vast majority of parts produced in the industry is subjected to deformation in steel low carbon, this was chosen as material for the manufacture of the samples used in the experiment. These samples were subjected to various degrees of cold bending and applying for recrystallization annealing with controlled variation of parameters. By intercomparison of samples and application of various tests were characterized hardness, metallographic structure, average size of the precipitate, and the correlation between the annealing conditions versus the level of recovery of work hardening. Through the data obtained it observed the importance of defining the parameters in a scientific way of heating for recrystallization, failing to affect the characteristics of components.
