This thesis consists of an introduction and four research papers related to free boundary problems and systems of fully non-linear elliptic equations. Paper A and Paper B prove optimal regularity of solutions to general elliptic and parabolic free boundary problems, where the operators are fully non-linear and convex. Furthermore, it is proven that the free boundary is continuously differentiable around so called "thick" points, and that the free boundary touches the fixed boundary tangentially in two dimensions. Paper C analyzes singular points of solutions to perturbations of the unstable obstacle problem, in three dimensions. Blow-up limits are characterized and shown to be unique. The free boundary is proven to lie close to the zero-level set of the corresponding blow-up limit. Finally, the structure of the singular set is analyzed. Paper D discusses an idea on how existence and uniqueness theorems concerning quasi-monotone fully non-linear elliptic systems can be extended to systems that are not quasi-monotone. / <p>QC 20151210</p>

Partindo de um modelo para descrever a evolução temporal das populações de uma praga e de seu inimigo natural, determinamos os seus equilíbrios, e condições de estabilidade dos mesmos; investigamos também a possibilidade de ocorrer uma bifurcação de Hopf e consequentemente ciclos-limite. Antes de incluir no modelo a aplicação do controle de pragas, desenvolvemos uma análise de sensibilidade de certos números característicos do sistema. Em seguida, acoplamos ao modelo uma estratégia de Manejo Integrado de Pragas (MIP) que consiste na aplicação de inseticida e na liberação de inimigos naturais da praga, sempre que a densidade de pragas ultrapassar um Limiar Econômico; verificamos que, assim, a população de pragas é mantida em níveis toleráveis. Adicionalmente, formulamos um problema de controle ótimo, que é resolvido através da aplicação do princípio do máximo de Pontryagin. Porém, acrescentamos uma estrutura espacial discreta aos modelos propostos, com diferentes regras de movimentação para as populações (difusão, taxia local e taxia quase local), e aplicamos as técnicas de controle a estes modelos. / Starting from a model to describe the temporal evolution of a pest and its natural enemy, their equilibrium and stability conditions are studied; the possibility of Hopf bifurcation and thereby limit cycles is also investigated. Before including the application of pest control, we develop a sensitivity analysis of certain characteristic numbers of the system. Then we include an Integrated Pest Management (IPM) strategy, consisting of insecticide application and natural enemies release, whenever the pest density exceeds an Economic Threshold; we verify that in fact the pest population is kept within tolerable levels. Additionally, we formulate a problem of optimal control, which is solved by applying the Pontryagin maximum principle. Finally, a discrete spatial structure is proposed, with di erent movement rules (di usion, local taxis and almost local taxis) models, and control techniques are applied to these models.
