Low-rank Matrix Estimation

Fan, Xing 01 January 2024 (has links) (PDF)
The first part of this dissertation focuses on matrix-covariate regression models. While they have been studied in many existing works, classical statistical and computational methods for the analysis of the regression coefficient estimation are highly affected by high dimensional matrix-valued covariates. To address these issues, we proposes a framework of matrix-covariate regression models based on a low-rank constraint and an additional regularization for structured signals, with considerations of models of both continuous and binary responses. In the second part, we examine a Mixture Multilayer Stochastic Block Model (MMLSBM), where layers can be grouped into sets of similar networks. Each group of networks is endowed with a unique Stochastic Block Model. The objective is to partition the multilayer network into clusters of similar layers and identify communities within those layers. We present an alternative approach called the Alternating Minimization Algorithm (ALMA), which aims to simultaneously recover the layer partition and estimate the matrices of connection probabilities for the distinct layers. In the last part, we demonstrates the effectiveness of the projected gradient descent algorithm. Firstly, its local convergence rate is independent of the condition number. Secondly, under conditions where the objective function is rank-2r restricted L-smooth and μ-strongly convex, with L/μ < 3, projected gradient descent with appropriate step size converges linearly to the solution. Moreover, a perturbed version of this algorithm effectively navigates away from saddle points, converging to an approximate solution or a second-order local minimizer across a wide range of step sizes. Furthermore, we establish that there are no spurious local minimizes in estimating asymmetric low-rank matrices when the objective function satisfies L/μ < 3.

Nonlinear dynamic analysis of bidimensional vertical risers.

Yamao, Michele 10 May 2013 (has links)
In the last decade, deposits of oil and gas under deep waters were discovered along the Brazilian Southeast coast, which led to reassessment of concepts and techniques previously used for their exploitation under shallow waters. Parameters that were not previously considered to be critical became relevant in the structural design of the risers. Indeed, the discovery of new deposits in the so-called Santos Basin encouraged the development of research in this area in Brazil and worldwide. The oil and gas deposits found in the pre-salt layer occur in waters deeper than 2,000 meters, requiring new technologies to facilitate their extraction. The risers of production are nothing more than pipes that carry oil and gas from the ocean to the surface. In its various geometric configurations (vertical, catenary, lazy waves, etc.), they are extremely slender structural elements, which must withstand dynamic loads from deep currents, surface waves, internal flow and imposed motions, observing the strict design criteria regarding ultimate and service limit states. The vertical riser will be the focus of this work, which uses mathematical models with few degrees of freedom, known as reduced-order models (ROM), but with adequate capacity to represent the structural response both qualitatively and quantitatively, using non-linear modes as projection functions within the non-linear Galerkin method. The non-linear modes were intensively studied in the research group \"Dynamics, Stability and Control of Structural Systems\" at the Escola Politécnica of USP. Because they contain information of higher-order harmonics, they are able to accurately describe the response of the nonlinear system, using a smaller number of modes than the linear modes used in the classical modal superposition method. Procedures based on the method of invariant manifold and the method of multiple scales alike will be applied to analytical continuum models (with infinite number of degrees of freedom). For the reduction of degrees of freedom, a method based on the identification of the virtual works in both the high-hierarchy and the ROM will be used, so that the system under dynamic loading can be studied in a low-dimension phase space. 13 This research, in addition to academic challenges inherent to the subject has obvious economic and strategic importance for the country.

Modèle de mélange et modèles linéaires généralisés, application aux données de co-infection (arbovirus & paludisme) / Mixture model and generalized linear models, application to co-infection data (arbovirus & malaria)

Loum, Mor Absa 28 August 2018 (has links)
We are interested, in this thesis, to the study of mixture models and generalized linear models, with an application to co-infection data between arboviruses and malaria parasites. After a first part dedicated to the study of co-infection using a multinomial logistic model, we propose in a second part to study the mixtures of generalized linear models. The proposed method to estimate the parameters of the mixture is a combination of a moment method and a spectral method. Finally, we propose a final section for studing extreme value mixtures under random censoring. The estimation method proposed in this section is done in two steps based on the maximization of a likelihood.

Chiappori, Guido, Jose 10 February 2015 (has links)
This thesis presents a new Linear Voltage Stabilization System (LVSS) specially designed for µ-hybrid vehicles using the Stop-Start function. The LVSS stabilizes the battery voltage during the start-up of the Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) limiting the start-up current using parallels MOSFETs working in linear mode. A prototype was developed and tested in a car. Results have shown the battery voltage properly stabilized limiting the start-up current. Furthermore the proposed solution does not impact on the overall performance of the Stop-Start. Main advantages are its small volume, low price and the fact that there is no EMC perturbation as transistors work in linear mode.
