Relationships between ensemble placement, musical independence, gender, and instrument family, among band students at three regional universitiesDorothy, Wayne F. January 1996 (has links)
Little is known about post-secondary band students' growth in musical independence, nor have the relationships between ensemble placement, year in school, gender, and instrument family been documented. Little research is available regarding the effects of instrument family (on which the student performs) or gender on the development of musical independence among music majors. Additionally, previous studies have identified a drop in music achievement test scores for college music majors as they progress from their freshman to sophomore or sophomore to junior years. This study attempts to address and evaluate these issues.The introduction presents a brief overview of the purpose and importance of the study. The review of related literature explores musical independence and the assessment of musical independence, as well as relationships between musical independence, ensemble placement, related listening skills, gender, and instrument family.Richard Colwell's Music Achievement Test 3 and Music Achievement Test 4 were administered to 354 band students at Ball State University, Florida State University, and Wichita State University. Test scores and demographic data including school, student identification number (usually a social security number), top ensemble in which the student participated (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), college major (music major or non-music major), year in school (freshman through graduate student), gender (male or female), and instrument family (woodwind, brass, or percussion) were collected. Data was entered into Statview II, a statistical analysis program for the Macintosh computer. Data was analyzed using ANOVA, Scheffe, and permutation analysis. Conclusions were drawn and recommendations for additional research were made. / School of Music

Raffaello Squarise (1856-1945) : the colonial career of an Italian maestroMurray, David, n/a January 2005 (has links)
This work examines the life of Raffaello Squarise (1856-1945), an Italian maestro who was a leading musician in the city of Dunedin, New Zealand, from 1889 until his retirement in 1933. Squarise worked as a professional in a predominantly amateur musical environment, and this thesis demonstrates his widely-felt presence and discernible influence in Dunedin�s cultural life, through his activities as a violinist, teacher, conductor, and composer. Furthermore, it illustrates the nature of the active musical culture in Dunedin, through Squarise�s participation in established local practices and the contrast provided by the �otherness� of his Italian ethnicity. The thesis shows that a two-way adaptive process took place between Squarise and the Dunedin community, as each engaged with the unfamiliar culture of the other. The success of Squarise�s musical career in the antipodes, it is argued, was based upon his willingness to adapt to the cultural, intellectual, and musical environment of his adopted home.
The method used in this study is that of interpretative biography: it conveys the experience of the individual while emphasizing context through the subject�s interaction with his environment. The sources of the research are mainly archival, and include Squarise�s personal papers, newspapers, the archives of local music organizations, and music ephemera. These are augmented by interviews undertaken with some of the few people (nearly sixty years since his death) who knew Squarise. The thesis is a study of the public more than the private man, but the sources are extensive enough to provide a thorough representation of Squarise�s professional activities.

This thesis examines the history of the performance and dissemination of chamber music in Melbourne during the period 1877 to 1901. It explores the role and development of chamber music in concerts held by Melbourne’s leading musical societies and public subscription series, and various concerts featuring local and touring performers. Discussion is placed within an international context and the thesis asks whether local musicians were influenced by contemporary developments in Europe and if so, was the primary influence English or German? / The bulk of the thesis explores the history of some of Melbourne’s musical societies and public concerts and focuses in particular on the repertoire that was performed, methods of program construction, the perceived ‘educational’ value of chamber music and performances within educational institutions. It demonstrates that performances of chamber music flourished during Melbourne’s economic boom of the 1880s, and that although performances declined during the following depression of the 1890s, standards of performance had improved, audiences were better educated and informed about chamber music, and Melbourne was relatively quick to introduce contemporary chamber repertoire. The first chamber works by local musicians and composers were also composed and performed in Melbourne during this period. / The availability of competent musicians was a significant factor and played a role in determining the type of repertoire that was performed. With large numbers of competent pianists and string players, and very few wind players, present in Melbourne during this period, for example, the repertory tended to focus on works for piano and/or strings. The contribution of local and international performers, particularly English and German-born and/or trained instrumentalists, is also considered. English and German musicians not only had an impact on the shaping of the repertory, but also influenced the way that concerts were organized. These influences, however, often overlapped and were not always clearly defined.

Leon Francis Victor Caron (1850-1905) was one of the major figures in Australian nineteenth-century opera and orchestral circles. He was a well-known and well-liked public figure, regarded with respect and affection by musicians and audiences alike. Little has been written concerning Caron’s career. Given the amount he contributed to the Australian stage, an assessment of his importance within the music profession is warranted. Most areas of Caron’s life are, as yet, totally unexplored; it falls outside the ambit of this thesis to present every detail pertaining to his varied and extensive musical career. Nevertheless, new information about a selection of Caron’s ventures is drawn upon here for the first time. Much of this material is used to examine the impact of Caron’s conducting on the orchestral profession in Melbourne and Sydney. Many of Caron’s performances (orchestral or otherwise) often featured the popular music of the day. The popular aspect of Caron as a composer is also considered, with particular reference to the incredibly successful pantomime Djin Djin. An examination of Caron’s performances gives great insight not only into the part he played in the wider profession; but it also sheds light on orchestral standards, performance practices and public tastes of the time. His contribution to the music profession in nineteenth-century Australia is extremely significant.
