Musculoskeletal Milestones: Encouraging Resident Competence and Leadership in Musculoskeletal EducationRubeor, Amity, Petrizzi, Michael, Furlong, Judith, Heiman, Diana L. 03 May 2014 (has links)
In this workshop, the STFM Group on Musculoskeletal Education will facilitate participants incorporating the ACGME milestones into a musculoskeletal curriculum. Participants will submit prior to the workshop perceived barriers in implementing the milestones. During the workshop, participants will engage in a hands-on curriculum that promotes milestone progression in residents, including concepts such as self-learning and leadership while learning core musculoskeletal medicine concepts, such as shoulder/knee exams and concussion management. Participants will apply these skills while training to administer a SMART (Sideline Management Assessment Response Techniques) course and thus learn how to assess resident competence in providing medical coverage at sporting events where these key concepts and skills such as spinal immobilization are necessary. The workshop will conclude with a discussion on collaboration and methods that promote interdisciplinary education in musculoskeletal medicine.
Objectives: After attending this workshop, participants will be able to: 1. Apply the ACGME milestones to key portions of a musculoskeletal curriculum, including joint exams, joint injections, casting/splinting, and sideline management 2. Reproduce hands-on skill stations in a residency setting, form the foundation for residency competence, and promote muscle memory in key musculoskeletal procedures. 3. Lead a SMART (Sideline Management Assessment Response Techniques) course in their residency setting.

Changes in Resident Perceptions Over Time: A Theoretical Examination of a Mega-EventBlosser, Phillip E. 02 September 2009 (has links)
Cities and countries increasingly seek mega-events to boost tourism, update local infrastructure, and improve the international standing of the host community. Benefits are actively promoted by the organizing committees, but these large-scale events also create significant economic, environmental and social costs for the host community. Measuring resident support is necessary because their support is required to secure the rights to the event, and to provide the necessary economic and human resources needed for hosting the event.
This study utilized existing data on the 1996 Atlanta Olympic Games to investigate the impact of a mega-event on the host community, and to measure resident support for the event. Social exchange theory provided the theoretical background for this dissertation. The theory states that the costs and benefits of an exchange are continually re-evaluated by the actors in the exchange relationship. The primary contribution of this study is support for the notion that social exchanges are temporal in nature; residents continually monitored the positive and negative impacts of the event on themselves and on their community. To reach this conclusion, this study utilized four data points in the year leading up to the Olympics to assess the changes in residents’ perceptions of the impacts of the event over time. These changes were evaluated in light of residents’ support for the event. A factor analysis reduced the fifteen impact statements into three factors: Benefits, Local Problems, and External Problems. Residents were segmented according to their assessment of the event impacts, resulting in three clusters: Supporters, Cynics, and Realists. Proximity to the main event location also was evaluated since this variable has had mixed results in previous resident studies.
Results showed that resident perceptions varied over time, thus providing support for monitoring residents over multiple time periods. In addition, residents’ support and residents’ plans to attend the event were contributing factors in the assessment of the Benefits and Local Problems. Supporters, Cynics, and Realists demonstrated significant differences over time in their assessment of External Problems, and proximity to the event was found to be a significant factor in residents’ assessment of Local Problems. / Ph. Introduction: The purpose of this study is to determine whether certain personality traits are as prominent in pharmacy practice residents who obtain positions through the post-Match process, previously referred to as the Scramble, as compared to residents who match directly with programs. Methods: Pharmacy residency program directors (RPDs) across the United States were asked to complete an electronic survey that gauged RPD perceptions of 13 personality traits commonly seen in pharmacy residents. RPDs were requested to separately evaluate residents who Scrambled and Matched to their respective programs. Exploratory factor analysis (EFA) was used to determine factor structure for the personality traits and to assess whether factors associate differentially between Matched and Scrambled residents. Results: A total of 1876 RPDs of post-graduate year one (PGY1), post-graduate year two (PGY2), and combined PGY1 and PGY2 pharmacy residency programs were contacted for study participation with a response rate of 21 percent. Demographic variables related to program type and number of residents per class were similar between Scrambled and Matched groups. The EFA identified two factors across 13 traits: we termed them as traditional traits and grit-like traits, and they significantly differed between the Scramble and Match groups. RPD perception of traditional traits (nine traits) were significantly higher in the Match group (p < 0.05), whereas perceived grit-like traits (four traits) were significantly higher in the Scramble group (p < 0.0001). Conclusion: Residency candidates who Match versus candidates who Scramble are perceived to have unique and significantly different personality traits.

Aversive control measures in the form of punishment and negative reinforcement are widely used in business and other organizations. The purpose of the present study was to systematically evaluate an alternative to aversive control. The effect of a package intervention consisting of a weighted checklist, weekly graphic feedback, and contingent social positive reinforcement in the form of praise was used with a university housing staff to increase duty performance.
Five undergraduate Resident Assistants served as participants. A multiple baseline across staff members was used to evaluate the effect of the intervention. Results indicate that the intervention increased performance by an average of 45% and decreased variability in performance. These results suggest that interventions based on feedback and positive reinforcement are effective, cost efficient, and represent a practical alternative to aversive control measures.
