Model Reduction and Nonlinear Model Predictive Control of Large-Scale Distributed Parameter Systems with Applications in Solid Sorbent-Based CO2 Capture

Yu, Mingzhao 01 April 2017 (has links)
This dissertation deals with some computational and analytic challenges for dynamic process operations using first-principles models. For processes with significant spatial variations, spatially distributed first-principles models can provide accurate physical descriptions, which are crucial for offline dynamic simulation and optimization. However, the large amount of time required to solve these detailed models limits their use for online applications such as nonlinear model predictive control (NMPC). To cope with the computational challenge, we develop computationally efficient and accurate dynamic reduced order models which are tractable for NMPC using temporal and spatial model reduction techniques. Then we introduce an input and state blocking strategy for NMPC to further enhance computational efficiency. To improve the overall economic performance of process systems, one promising solution is to use economic NMPC which directly optimizes the economic performance based on first-principles dynamic models. However, complex process models bring challenges for the analysis and design of stable economic NMPC controllers. To solve this issue, we develop a simple and less conservative regularization strategy with focuses on a reduced set of states to design stable economic NMPC controllers. In this thesis, we study the operation problems of a solid sorbent-based CO2 capture system with bubbling fluidized bed (BFB) reactors as key components, which are described by a large-scale nonlinear system of partial-differential algebraic equations. By integrating dynamic reduced models and blocking strategy, the computational cost of NMPC can be reduced by an order of magnitude, with almost no compromise in control performance. In addition, a sensitivity based fast NMPC algorithm is utilized to enable the online control of the BFB reactor. For economic NMPC study, compared with full space regularization, the reduced regularization strategy is simpler to implement and lead to less conservative regularization weights. We analyze the stability properties of the reduced regularization strategy and demonstrate its performance in the economic NMPC case study for the CO2 capture system.

Um método de Lagrangianos aumentados e sua aplicação em otimização de malhas / An augmented Lagrangian method and its application in optimization

Mazzini, Ana Paula 17 February 2012 (has links)
Os resultados obtidos foram promissores / Augmented Lagrangian methods are frequently used to solve minimization problems subject to general constraints. In particular, we study an augmented Lagrangian method that uses the PHR function, implemented in ALGENCAN, and observe its behavior when applied to solve a problem found in the field of Computer Graphics. The problem we will study and solve is found in the post-processing stage of the surface mesh generation, for which we propose an optimization technique to improve the mesh elements. When it comes to meshing surfaces in \'R POT..3\', triangular meshes parametrizations are widely used in applications of mesh processing. It is often necessary to preserve the surface metric and, thus, minimize the angle and area deformation. The optimization technique we propose aims to improve the distortions imposed by a parametrization onto angles and areas. To assert the efectiveness of the proposed technique, we implemented it in C++ language and used some classic mesh models from the literature to performe numerical experiments. The results were promising

Operations planning of large-scale hydrothermal systems.

Zambon, Renato Carlos 30 April 2008 (has links)
This paper presents the development of a Decision Support System (DSS) for the operational planning of large-scale hydrothermal systems formed by a series of hydroelectric and thermoelectric power plants, operated for the production and service demands for energy. Other sources of energy production, the expansion of the system, water transfers, multiple uses of water and environmental constraints are also considered. The DSS integrates a database with information of the hydrothermal system, a graphical interface to facilitate the editing of the data and display the results and the simulation and optimization models. The models of the called DSS HIDROTERM are based on the non-linear programming (NLP). In several applications made with the DSS with data for the Brazilian Hydrothermal System, formed by 4 subsystems and 128 active hydroelectric plants, very satisfactory results were obtained demonstrating various advances in relation to the model SISOPT from Barros et al. (2003), with emphasis on the processing speed, the size of systems to which the model can be applied and in a much more complete representation of the hydrothermal system. In addition to the planning of the operation of the hydrothermal system, the DSS can be applied also to the existing system diagnoses, analyses the impact of changes in operating rules and of multiple uses of water, planning and evaluation of expansion alternatives.

Resolução do problema de fluxo de potência ótimo com variáveis de controle discretas / Resolution of optimal power flow problem with discrete control variables

Soler, Edilaine Martins 01 March 2011 (has links)
The aim of solving the Optimal Power Flow problem is to determine the state of an electric power transmission system that optimizes a given system performance, while satisfying its physical and operating constraints. The Optimal Power Flow problem is modeled as a large-scale mixed-discrete nonlinear programming problem. In most techniques existing in the literature to solve the Optimal Power Flow problems, the discrete controls are modeled as continuous variables. These formulations are unrealistic, as some controls can be set only to values taken from a given set of discrete values. This study proposes a method for handling the discrete variables of the Optimal Power Flow problem. A function, which penalizes the objective function when discrete variables assume non-discrete values, is presented. By including this penalty function into the objective function, a nonlinear programming problem with only continuous variables is obtained and the solution of this problem is equivalent to the solution of the initial problem that contains discrete and continuous variables. The nonlinear programming problem is solved by a Interior-Point Method with filter line-search. Numerical tests using the IEEE 14, 30, 118 and 300-Bus test systems indicate that the proposed approach is efficient in the resolution of OPF problems.

Complexidade em programação não linear / Complexity in nonlinear programmin

Gardenghi, John Lenon Cardoso 09 August 2017 (has links)
In the present work, we have studied and developed algorithms with worst-case evaluation complexity analysis for nonlinear programming problems. For the unconstrained optimization case, we have established two similar algorithms that explore high-order regularization models. We have proposed a computational implementation that preserves the good properties of the evaluation complexity theory, and we made numerical experiments with classical problems from the literature, in order to check the implementation and certify the practical applicability of methods that employ high-order models. For the constrained optimization case, we have established a two phases algorithm that converges to points that meet the unscaled first-order optimality condition for the nonlinear programming problem.

ROI: An extensible R Optimization Infrastructure

Theußl, Stefan, Schwendinger, Florian, Hornik, Kurt 01 1900 (has links) (PDF)
Optimization plays an important role in many methods routinely used in statistics, machine learning and data science. Often, implementations of these methods rely on highly specialized optimization algorithms, designed to be only applicable within a specific application. However, in many instances recent advances, in particular in the field of convex optimization, make it possible to conveniently and straightforwardly use modern solvers instead with the advantage of enabling broader usage scenarios and thus promoting reusability. This paper introduces the R Optimization Infrastructure which provides an extensible infrastructure to model linear, quadratic, conic and general nonlinear optimization problems in a consistent way. Furthermore, the infrastructure administers many different solvers, reformulations, problem collections and functions to read and write optimization problems in various formats. / Series: Research Report Series / Department of Statistics and Mathematics
