Evaluation of Karst Spring Water Quality Using Water Quality Indices in Northeast Tennessee

Ensuring access to safe drinking water to protect public health in many communities underserved or unserved by centralized water systems in the US requires regular water quality testing and reporting. Following testing, access to easy-to-comprehend water quality information may be challenging. Households served by water utilities have access to water quality information. However, households depending on unregulated water systems like wells and springs are often unaware of their water quality. Therefore, this study utilized multiple water quality parameters to determine the quality of karst spring water using two Water Quality Index (WQI) methods. In-situ measurements of physico-chemical parameters (pH, dissolved oxygen, temperature, turbidity, conductivity, specific conductance, total dissolved solids, oxidation reduction potential were taken at 50 karst springs in east Tennessee during Summer 2021. Water samples were analyzed for microbial (fecal coliform, and E. coli), nutrients (nitrate and nitrite), and radiological (radon) constituents using standard analytical methods. Springs generally met federal and state water quality safe limits for physicochemical parameters, but 100% of water samples contained fecal coliform and 90% contained E. coli revealing widespread fecal contamination; 60% of springs exceeded radon concentrations of 300 pCi/L. WQI method 1 (Brown et al. 1972) rated 12 % of springs as very poor water quality and 88% as unfit for drinking. WQI method 2 (NSFWQI) rated 4% of the sampled springs as good, 92% as moderate and 4 % as bad. Water treatment procedures for microbial pollution purification are advised before the studied springs are used as a drinking water source.

Water Quality Assessment of Karst Spring Water as a Private Water Supply Source in Northeast Tennessee

Karst springs are an essential source of private water supply for about 10% of households in Tennessee. However, these springs, which can be easily polluted, are unregulated. This study, therefore, assesses water quality spatial patterns and water quality rating of roadside springs in northeast Tennessee. Karst spring water samples collected from 50 springs were assessed using EPA Standard methods for pathogens, nutrients, radon, and physicochemical parameters. Springs generally met federal and state standards for physicochemical parameters, 90% of samples contained E. coli, and all samples contained fecal coliform. High E. coli was spatially clustered causing a fecal contamination hot spot on the border of Washington and Sullivan Counties, Tennessee. 60% of springs exceeded radon concentrations of 300 pCi/L. Water quality ratings were very poor or unfit for drinking, with 4% of springs ranked “good”. Therefore, microbial pollution purification procedures are advised before using these springs as a drinking water source.

Indigenous archaeological fisheries records provide evidence of multiple baselines in the northeast Pacific

It is well recognized that humans have had a significant role in transforming terrestrial landscapes, yet comparatively little research has examined the long-term impacts of humans on marine ecosystems. As an applied field of research, marine historical ecology draws on archaeological, ecological, and other archival information to reveal the dynamics of marine social-ecological systems. This thesis examines the enduring history of relationships between ancient Indigenous fisheries and marine systems in the northeast Pacific. Specifically, I advance the development and application of two methodologies for 1) quantifying the composition of ancient fish landings, 2) estimating ancient ocean temperatures from archaeological fish bone assemblages, and 3) assessing the scale of ancient shellfish harvests using a regression-based approach. This thesis presents a novel method for estimating the ‘ancient Mean Temperature of the Catch’ (aMTC) using Indigenous fisheries catch records from two archaeological sites in the northeast Pacific. Despite different catch compositions, I observe an increase in aMTC over a 5,000-year period at two contemporaneously occupied archaeological sites in southwestern British Columbia, Canada. Given that preindustrial fisheries data are ubiquitous in coastal archaeological sites, this method has the potential to be applied globally to broaden the temporal and geographic scale of ocean temperature baselines. Furthermore, the regression-based methodology presented in this thesis has broad applicability to archaeological shellfish assemblages, as it allows for reconstructing size frequency distributions of ancient shellfish harvests and refined estimates of clam biomass. Together, these methods offer a long-term perspective on the enduring relationships between Indigenous peoples and marine environments in the northeast Pacific. Furthermore, the methods advanced in this thesis shed light on ancient oceanographic conditions and fisheries practices, which can be used to inform contemporary management efforts. Paleogene Temperature Gradient, Seasonal Variation and Climate Evolution of Northeast China

Continental Paleogene climates have been well studied in Europe and North America, but very little is known from Asia because paleoclimatic results have only been reported from particular geological intervals. Here, based on 29 plant assemblages from 8 well age-controlled fossiliferous sites, we quantitatively reconstruct the climates through most of the Paleogene of northeast China and discuss related seasonal variations. Our results demonstrate that the mean annual temperature (MAT) gradient was fairly shallow (0.27 °C/1° latitude) during the Paleocene throughout this region. In the Eocene, seasonality was high in the region, indicated by marked differences in both temperature and precipitation between winters and summers of the sites. The paleo-East Asian monsoon must have had intensified at least in the late mid Eocene, shown by apparent differences in annual precipitation distribution at all the sites. Regarding the Paleogene climatic evolution of northeast China, our quantitative results suggest that MAT overall declined from warm in the Paleocene and Eocene to moderate in the Oligocene, generally consistent with the trend of marine records but with some distinctions. Two significant cooling events are recognized in the early and mid Eocene with MAT 3.4 °C and 3.8 °C lower, and winter temperature 5.8 °C and 4.7 °C lower, respectively, in similar magnitudes to corresponding variations in Europe and North America. Furthermore, the present results show that MAT rebounded in the late mid Eocene and then decreased until the Oligocene, a similar pattern demonstrated in Europe during the mid Eocene to Oligocene interval.

This thesis uses qualitative research methods to elaborate on Ralph Blizard’s legacy in the old-time music community. The aspects of Blizard’s legacy that were examined include his style of fiddling and the actions he took to preserve traditional Appalachian old-time music. This thesis discusses the old-time music revival in the late 20th Century and Blizard’s role in the revival. This thesis used documentary research, archival research, and personal interviews. Documentary and archival research took place at the Ralph Blizard Museum in Blountville, Tennessee, and the Archives of Appalachia at East Tennessee State University. I conducted personal interviews with Blizard’s musical colleagues and members of his family. This thesis shows that Blizard’s legacy in old-time music is defined the actions he took to help preserve the sound of traditional Appalachian old-time music just as much as it is defined by his style of fiddling.

Perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes about Long-Acting Reversible Contraceptives (LARCs) among Women in Appalachian Tennessee

Patient-centered contraceptive care is key for ensuring that individuals achieve their personal reproductive goals. Despite public health efforts, preventing undesired pregnancies and improving maternal and child health outcomes remains unresolved in the United States (US). In Tennessee (TN), the rate of unintended pregnancies remains higher than the national rate (32.4% vs. 30.3%). Long-acting reversible contraceptives (LARCs) are 99% effective in preventing undesired pregnancies; however, uptake remains low in rural and underserved communities. Previous research has provided some insight into women’s perceptions of LARCs; however, those guided by conceptual frameworks to understand the multiple influences that impact perceptions towards LARCs, especially among rural regions, are scarce. This multimethod qualitative study explored multiple influences that impact northeast Tennessee women’s perceptions and attitudes toward LARCs using the Socio-ecological Model (SEM) as a guiding framework. The qualitative study comprised six focus groups and seven individual interviews of women aged 18-44, not pregnant, and current residents of five Counties in Northeast TN. Participants’ demographics were captured through an anonymous survey administered through REDCap. Qualitative data from these sessions were recorded via Zoom, an online audio/video conferencing platform. Each interview and focus group lasted 60 to 90 minutes. Focus group and interview data were combined, transcribed, and uploaded into NVivo for thematic analysis. A priori list of codes identified from the constructs of the SEM was initially used to deductively code the data. Subsequently, the data were analyzed inductively for new codes and themes that did not apply to the a priori categories. Quotations that were representative of or inconsistent with the codes of interest were identified. Fifteen themes and 20 sub-themes were identified using the SEM; On the intrapersonal level of the SEM, participants’ attitudes towards a method, perception of method features, and perceived side effects were identified as themes that delineate influences on their LARC utilization. On the interpersonal level, perception of partner support, perceived support from peer/social networks, and provider trust were themes that describe influences on participants’ LARC utilization. On the community level, the cost of the method, access to information, perceived accessibility to a method, social services, and cultural norms themes were identified as influences on participants’ use of LARCs. On the organizational level, the availability of preferred methods in a clinic, the need for multiple clinic visits to enable the use of a method, and provider counseling practices were salient themes impacting LARC utilization. On the policy level, insurance, and billing policies, sex education policies were identified as impacting LARC utilization. The study presents multi-layered influences on LARC utilization among Northeast TN women, highlighting the utility of the SEM in understanding factors that influence contraceptive use. Findings are critical for programming as they highlight the areas of influence that can be addressed to increase LARC uptake and enable women in rural and underserved regions of the US to achieve personal reproductive goals.
