Color Me Capable: The Rise of African-American Nurse Faculty at Lincoln School for Nurses, 1898 to 1961Graham-Perel, Ashley January 2021 (has links)
The recruitment of diverse nurse faculty fosters culturally competent teaching, role modeling of cultural awareness, and mentorship for diverse nursing students. However, with regard to the evolution of New York City’s diversity, the nursing profession has historically failed to parallel the societal transformation. This researcher investigated nursing education’s past in regard to race and ethnicity through the historical case study of one of New York City’s first schools established to educate Black women in nursing arts, namely, the Lincoln School for Nurses of the Bronx, New York. The lack of diversity within nursing is not an issue that developed overnight. Deficiencies of diverse nurse educators have been associated with decreased numbers of enrolled minority students, insufficient percentages of minority nursing staff, and the negative stimuli on healthcare that stemmed from unconscious biases and healthcare disparities.
This researcher employed the historical research method and accessed archival materials (both primary and secondary sources) to study the Lincoln School for Nurses. The findings of this study identified the progressive development of African-American nursing students in New York and the pivotal role African American nursing faculty have played in the education of Black nurses. Along with the historical study of the Lincoln School for Nurses, biographical sketches of prominent graduates and leaders (such as Adah B. Samuels Thoms and Ivy Nathan Tinkler) were presented. Furthermore, previous studies of Lincoln School for Nurses’ institution and educational standards, such as the Ethel Johns Report of 1925 and the 1930 study of the school by Isabel M. Stewart and Teachers College, Columbia University, were investigated. The presence of structural racism and discrimination influenced the growth and development of Black nursing faculty in history and, arguably, set the foundation for Blacks in nursing education of present-day. It is vital that researchers examine the origins of this dilemma and provide clarity to the events and experiences that influenced the nursing profession’s current state of diversity, prior to attempting to resolve an issue that took decades to cultivate.

The relationship of SOC to well-being and its effect on the perception of a selected number of work characteristicsBelelie, Cindylou January 2003 (has links)
Thesis (MA)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Many Black nurses who originally come from previously disadvantaged communities
find themselves at present in relatively senior positions. The reality is, however, that
many of these employees are still residing in residential areas where transformation
and changes are still very limited and progress hardly noticeable. Such employees
experience the stressful world of nursing on the one hand while on the other hand
they also have to battle with the realities of the legacy of Apartheid. These may
include aspects such as financial burdens, long distances from work, poor public
transport, high crime rates in their communities and schools that are yet to improve
standards.
There are still Black South Africans, amongst them Black nursing sisters, who have
to battle with these problems daily, in addition to having to cope with occupational
stressors. One would assume then that they may be experiencing a large degree of
strain and burnout.
This research was therefore concerned with those nurses who remain productive and
efficient in their work by overcoming constant occupational and non-occupational
demands and stressors. Not all nurses, however, experience ill health due to
stressors. There are nurses who do cope well. Two research questions were investigated with reference to the above: (a) Why some
Black nursing sisters appear to cope better than others; and (b) What the role of
Sense of Coherence (SOC) is as a coping resource.
The study therefore investigated the statistical relationship between (a) SOC and
well-being and (b) the effect that SOC has on the perception of a selected number of
work characteristics.
Significant Pearson Correlations were found between SOC and psychosomatic strain
symptoms and burnout frequency. No significant relationship was found between
SOC and burnout intensity. A significant relationship was found between SOC and
work demands, as well as SOC and career rewards. Findings further indicate that no
significant relationship was found between organisational climate, leadership
relations, influence at work, time pressures and adverse factors in the work
environment.
Two-way ANOVAs indicate that no significant main effect exists in respect of SOC on
psychosomatic strain symptoms. The study also indicates that a significant main
effect exists for SOC on burnout frequency, whereas no significant main effect exists
for SOC on burnout intensity.
No significant interaction effect exists between SOC and age on psychosomatic
strain symptoms, burnout frequency and burnout intensity. A significant interaction effect exists between SOC and education level on burnout intensity, while there is no
significant interaction effect between SOC and educational level on psychosomatic
strain symptoms and burnout frequency.
A significant main effect exists for SOC on the perception of leadership relations,
influence at work and career rewards. Findings further indicate that no significant
main effect exists for SOC on the perception of: orgnisational climate, time pressures,
work demands and adverse factors in the work environment.
No significant interaction effect exists between SOC and age on the perception of
organisational climate, influence at work, work demands, time pressures, career
rewards, leadership relations and adverse factors in the work environment.
Results indicate that no significant interaction effect exists between SOC and
educational level on the perception of organisational climate, influence at work, work
demands, time pressures, career rewards, leadership relations and adverse factors in
the work environment.
The results thus indicate that a positive correlation exists between SOC and wellbeing. / AFRIKAANSE OPSOMMING: Talle verpleegters uit voorheen benadeelde gebiede, bevind hulself huidiglik in
relatiewe senior posisies.
realiteit ondersoek: (a) Waarom sommige Swart verpleegsusters die stressors in hul
beroeps-en lewensomstandighede beter as ander hanteer en (b) Watter rol speel
koherensiebelewing ("SOC") as enstreshantering meganisme.
organisatoriese klimaat, invloede by die werk, werkseise, tydsdruk,
werknemerwelstand.

Cultural issues in the understanding of ethics in the nursing profession : implications for practice.Gambu, Sibongile Qhakazile. January 2000 (has links)
The study explored moral and ethical dilemmas experienced by Black nurses in a local community clinic. In particular, it examined the influences of the concept of self or personhood in nurses' ethical and moral decision-making. Influences of culture and family on morality were also investigated. Using the interview methodology developed by Gilligan (1982), nurses were asked to tell stories involving moral dilemmas in their work. Interviews were analysed using the voicecentred relational method. This method involves reading the interview narratives a number of times, each reading focusing on a particular aspect of a respondent's narrative. Results show that nurses often find themselves caught between two opposing moral and ethical viewpoints in their practices. On the one hand are hospital procedures, which are informed by universalist approaches to the person and the moral. From these are derived ethical principles emphasizing individual autonomy and choice. On the other hand, the majority of patients subscribe to a communal view . ofpersonhood. From this perspective, to be moral entails knowing one's position and responsibilities within family and community. Dilemmas arose from nurses' identification with patients' moral perspectives while realizing that this could lead to "unethical" conduct, (given , their training and current codes of ethics). It is recommended that moral and ethical deiiberations should dialogue with alternative, marginalised, viewpoints, in order to be culturally responsive. It is further recommended that ethics be conceptualised as a practical-moral engagement, rather than a detached application of knowledge. / Thesis (M.Soc.Sc.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 2000.

The professional development of Black South Africa nurses 1908-1994 : a historical perspectiveEsterhuizen, Johanna Maria 11 February 2014 (has links)
The early professional history of black South African nurses has not been the principal focus of local historians. Consequently, a qualitative historical inquiry was conducted into the available literature on the economic, social, political and cultural factors that influenced the professional development of black South African nurses from 1908–1994. Non-probability, purposive sampling assisted in assembling a corpus of historically rich data for analysis using time-specific a priori codes. The findings revealed that; culturally, black South African nurses had to adapt to a Western-dominated scientific health view; educationally, they had to master specialised formal Western terminology presented in a ‘foreign’ language (English) and, socio-politically, they had to adapt to being regarded as an elitist middle-class in the black community while remaining marginalised in the white-dominated workplace. Recommendations include expanding the historical research base, designing more effective strategies for promoting cultural sensitivity, and prioritising the focus on teaching and student retention. / Health Studies / M.A. (Health Studies)
