Stability and recharging of aprotic Li-O₂ batteries

Chen, Yuhui January 2014 (has links)
Non-aqueous rechargeable lithium-air (O₂) batteries are receiving intense interest because of their high theoretical specific energy, which are several times greater than that of lithium-ion batteries. To achieve it, the highly reversible formation/decomposition of Li₂O₂ is required to occur in the cathode during cycling. Due to the reactivity of reduced O₂ species, the aprotic electrolyte and carbon electrode substrate would be attacked and then decomposed. The organic carbonate decomposed on discharge, forming C₃H₆(OCO₂Li)₂, Li₂CO₃, HCO₂Li, CH₃CO₂Li, CO₂ and H₂O. Part of these by-products decomposed on the subsequent charge process and the rest remained and blocked the electrode surface. Finally, the cell cycling stopped because of the depletion of electrolyte and the passivation of the electrode surface. Possible mechanisms are proposed for reactions on discharge and charge. Some other types of aprotic solvents were investigated in the same way. Ethers, amides, sulfones, dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), etc reveal better stability than organic carbonates. Reversible formation/decomposition was observed together with minor side-reactions. Besides electrolytes, carbon substrate of electrode also slightly decomposed. Several other substrate materials were studied. If the carbon electrodes were replaced with the nanoporous gold electrodes, less side-reaction was observed in the cells, and the cell sustained 100 cycles without severe polarisation and capacity fading. The charge performance of a Li-O₂ cell remains a challenge. Great voltage polarisation even at modest rate was observed because of the difficulty of charge transfer between solid electrode surface and solid Li₂O₂. Redox mediators were used in a Li-O₂ cell, which transported the charge between electrode surface and solid Li₂O₂, acting as an electron-hole transfer agent. The oxidation of solid Li₂O₂ was facilitated and the cell with mediator demonstrated 100 charge/discharge cycles.

Myšková, Marika January 2014 (has links)
The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the process of introducing unlimited tariffs by O2 Czech Republic a.s. as to the Czech telecommunications market. The focus of this topic has two perspectives, perspective of the innovative companies and competitors' view. In the assessment perspective, there is also the view of customers. In the first part, I have dealt mainly with the general theory of introducing innovative products to the market, which is related to business surveys that were conducted, in particular the analysis of competition and the market. In the practical part, I focused on the very process of implementation, including the initial assessment of the market situation, setting pricing policies or communication tools that were used. In conclusion, I compared previous expectations with real impacts.

Metabolic and Cardiovascular Responses During Variable Intensity Exercise

Björklund, Glenn January 2010 (has links)
Previous research investigating endurance sports from a physiological perspectivehas mainly used constant or graded exercise protocols, although the nature ofsports like cross-country skiing and road cycling leads to continuous variations inworkload. Current knowledge is thus limited as regards physiological responses tovariations in exercise intensity. Therefore, the overall objective of the present thesiswas to investigate cardiovascular and metabolic responses to fluctuations inexercise intensity during exercise. The thesis is based on four studies (Studies I-IV);the first two studies use a variable intensity protocol with cardiorespiratory andblood measurements during cycling (Study I) and diagonal skiing (Study II). InStudy III one-legged exercise was used to investigate muscle blood flow duringvariable intensity exercise using PET scanning, and Study IV was performed toinvestigate the transition from high to low exercise intensity in diagonal skiing, with both physiological and biomechanical measurements. The current thesisdemonstrates that the reduction in blood lactate concentration after high-intensityworkloads is an important performance characteristic of prolonged variableintensity exercise while cycling and diagonal skiing (Studies I-II). Furthermore, during diagonal skiing, superior blood lactate recovery was associated with a highaerobic power (VO2max) (Study II). Respiratory variables such as VE/VO2, VE/VCO2and RER recovered independently of VO2max and did not reflect the blood lactate oracid base levels during variable intensity exercise during either cycling or diagonalskiing (Studies I-II). There was an upward drift in HR over time, but not inpulmonary VO2, with variable intensity exercise during both prolonged cyclingand diagonal skiing. As a result, the linear HR-VO2 relationship that wasestablished with a graded protocol was not present during variable intensityexercise (Studies I-II). In Study III, blood flow heterogeneity during one-leggedexercise increased when the exercise intensity decreased, but remained unchangedbetween the high intensity workloads. Furthermore, there was an excessiveincrease in muscular VO2 in the consecutive high-intensity workloads, mainlyexplained by increased O2 extraction, as O2 delivery and blood flow remainedunchanged. In diagonal skiing (Study IV) the arms had a lower O2 extraction thanthe legs, which could partly be explained by their longer contact phase along withmuch higher muscle activation. Furthermore, in Study IV, the O2 extraction in botharms and legs was at the upper limit during the high intensity workload with nofurther margin for increase. This could explain why no excessive increase inpulmonary VO2 occurred during diagonal skiing (Study II), as increased O2extraction is suggested to be the main reason for this excessive increase in VO2(Study III).

Impact de l’oxygène et de l’H2S sur la corrosion du fer pur et sur le chargement en hydrogène / Impact of oxygen on corrosion of pure iron and on hydrogen charging in H2S Medium

Deffo Ayagou, Martien Duvall 12 October 2018 (has links)
Three main avenues of research were conducted. The first part is concerned with the reaction chemistry between dissolved H2S and O2. A literature review is presented, identifying a number of reaction pathways associated with the dissolved H2S and O2 reaction as well as analytical methods used to measure the resulting S-O reaction products. Subsequently, thermodynamic calculations allow for the prediction of the most stable species indissolved H2S -O2 solutions, later confirmed using spectroscopic and chromatographic methods. Such techniques reveal that the principal soluble reaction products are sulfate, thiosulfate and sulfite anions,as well as hydronium ions. From pH monitoring, a continuous rise in acidity of an H2S solution can be an indication of O2 ingress.Secondly, electrochemical methods are used to explore corrosion phenomena and deposit formation in the presence and absence of O2 pollution. Corrosion rates in the presence of O2 are reproducibly much higher if compared against those in the system lacking O2 . An electrochemical impedance spectroscopy model has been developed to study the evolution of the metal / electrolyte interface over time, which is validated using weight loss corrosion rate measurements, and represents impedance data reported in the literature on similar systems. Finally, the third part is devoted to hydrogen uptake in pure iron and petroleum industry sour-grade steel (X65). In the absence of O2 pollution, permeation efficiency yields close to 100% are observed between the permeation current and the corrosion current estimated from the impedance measurements over a period of several weeks. In the presence of O2 , however, this yield is reproducibly far lower. Moreover, some tests conducted on X65 also show a significant effect of O2 on the quite protective nature of the deposit, not observed on the model system using pure iron

Sensitivity of the Opal Instrument for Gravity Wave Detection

Zia, Kenneth I. 01 December 2018 (has links)
Knowing what goes on in the upper atmosphere (∼80-140 km) is very important to the space science community. There are several competing forces that influence the temperature and densities of neutral molecules in that region. OPAL (Optical Profiling of the Atmospheric Limb) is funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to measure the temperature there using light from oxygen molecules (∼760 nm). To accomplish this,OPAL is built into a CubeSat (a satellite the size of a loaf of bread) to be launched from the International Space Station (ISS) at an altitude of about 400 km. This vantage point is needed to see the light that is absorbed before it makes it to the ground, so a satellite is the optimal choice. Similar to looking at a tennis ball in your hand and trying to see the details of the yellow fuzz fibers on the outer edges of the ball, OPAL is trying to see the light emitted from oxygen at the outer edge of the atmosphere (also called the limb). In order to see how well OPAL can detect space weather signatures affecting the oxygen emissions a suite of models are made to simulate its output. This suite is made of: simulating the flight path of CubeSat, modeling where the OPAL instrument is looking, and how the oxygen light changes with where the instrument is looking. Because we are currently in a solar minimum, the occurrence of solar storms and geomagnetic storms are considered rare events. This allows for the concentrating on detecting gravity waves in this region and the minimum values of detecting them with this developed model.

O2 activation at bioinspired complexes: dinuclear copper systems and mononuclear non-heme iron compounds. Mechanisms and catalytic applications in oxidative transformations

Company Casadevall, Anna 16 December 2008 (has links)
Oxygen activation in biological systems serves as inspiration for the development of alternatives to traditional oxidants which are considered highly toxic and environmentally harmful. In this work, synthetic compounds are used as models of the active site of dinuclear copper proteins and mononuclear non-heme iron systems involved in oxygen activation in natural systems. The prepared dinuclear copper complexes show the formation of copper(III)-bis(oxo) species capable of performing the ortho-hydroxylation of phenols analogously to the reaction performed by tyrosinase. On the other hand, the synthesized iron systems can be considered as models of Rieske dioxygenases and they can perform the estereospecific hydroxylation of alkanes and the epoxidation and cis-dihydroxylation of olefins using hydrogen peroxide as the oxidant. Overall, the work presented here demonstrates that the development of model systems constitutes a good approach for the study of natural systems.
