Diffraction Analysis with UWB Validation for ToA Ranging in the Proximity of Human Body and Metallic Objects

Askarzadeh, Fardad 08 August 2017 (has links)
"The time-of-arrival (ToA)-based localization technique performs superior in line-of-sight (LoS) conditions, and its accuracy degrades drastically in proximity of micro-metals and human body, when LoS conditions are not met. This calls for modeling and formulation of Direct Path (DP) to help with mitigation of ranging error. However, the current propagation tools and models are mainly designed for telecommunication applications via focus on delay spread of wireless channel profile, whereas ToA-based localization strive for modeling of DP component. This thesis provides a mitigation to the limitation of existing propagation tools and models to computationally capture the effects of micro-metals and human body on ToA-based indoor localization. Solutions for each computational technique are validated by empirical measurements using Ultra-Wide-Band (UWB) signals. Finite- Difference-Time-Domain (FDTD) numerical method is used to estimate the ranging errors, and a combination of Uniform-Theory-of-Diffraction (UTD) ray theory and geometrical ray optics properties are utilized to model the path-loss and the ToA of the DP obstructed by micro- metals. Analytical UTD ray theory and geometrical ray optics properties are exploited to model the path-loss and the ToA of the first path obstructed by the human body for the scattering scenarios. The proposed scattering solution expanded to analytically model the path-loss and ToA of the DP obstructed by human body in angular motion for the radiation scenarios."

Fábrica de matemática : aprendizagem de geometria via confecção e mainipulação de objetos digitais e não-digitais

Aliatti, Camila January 2017 (has links)
The present study proposes to answer the research question: how can we approach concepts of flat geometry with sixth-year students by making digital and non-digital manipulative objects, allowing them to recognize themselves as manufacturers of their own knowledge? The research presents a proposal of activity in which students were invited to be manufacturers of their own knowledge, more specifically of knowledge of flat geometry. Through the making and manipulation of digital and non-digital objects, students transformed the classroom into a Mathematics Factory. The study was developed during 2016, with a sixth grade class from a municipal school in Sapucaia do Sul, at regular school hours. Based on the construction theory of Seymour Papert, Paulo Freire 's pedagogy of autonomy and cooperative and team learning by Jean Piaget, and using the case study as methodology, the present work presents an experience of approaching concepts of flat geometry - area, perimeter, parallelism and perpendicularism, among others - that allowed the students to recognize the possibility of becoming active agents in the construction of their knowledge. In addition, it was perceived as to the results, that when they are offered different opportunities for learning, students can become critical, autonomous subjects and producers of knowledge.

Seeing sound: a new way to illustrate auditory objects and their neural correlates

Lim, Yoon Seob 22 January 2016 (has links)
This thesis develops a new method for time-frequency signal processing and examines the relevance of the new representation in studies of neural coding in songbirds. The method groups together associated regions of the time-frequency plane into objects defined by time-frequency contours. By combining information about structurally stable contour shapes over multiple time-scales and angles, a signal decomposition is produced that distributes resolution adaptively. As a result, distinct signal components are represented in their own most parsimonious forms.  Next, through neural recordings in singing birds, it was found that activity in song premotor cortex is significantly correlated with the objects defined by this new representation of sound. In this process, an automated way of finding sub-syllable acoustic transitions in birdsongs was first developed, and then increased spiking probability was found at the boundaries of these acoustic transitions. Finally, a new approach to study auditory cortical sequence processing more generally is proposed. In this approach, songbirds were trained to discriminate Morse-code-like sequences of clicks, and the neural correlates of this behavior were examined in primary and secondary auditory cortex. It was found that a distinct transformation of auditory responses to the sequences of clicks exists as information transferred from primary to secondary auditory areas. Neurons in secondary auditory areas respond asynchronously and selectively -- in a manner that depends on the temporal context of the click. This transformation from a temporal to a spatial representation of sound provides a possible basis for the songbird's natural ability to discriminate complex temporal sequences.

Casting nets and framing films : an ethnography of networks of cultural production in Beirut

Dakessian, Areck Ardack January 2018 (has links)
Filmmakers first received widespread academic attention as case studies into the increasing casualisation of labour in post-industrial economies. Their precarious existence in project-based labour markets provided much food for thought about the future of work, while their status as artists and producers of culture entered them into debates around just what art is and how to approach it. But in light of recent transformations in the cultural industries and the accompanied blurring of boundaries between production and consumption, academic understandings of the lives filmmakers lead have also been somewhat blurred. This ethnography of networks of cultural production in Beirut re-introduces filmmakers into the very sociological debates that they helped spark. Might a return to the situated experience of these theoretically and methodologically challenging people, who form workgroups and collaborate with each other repeatedly across projects as they craft their own careers, shed productive light on academic understandings of precarity, cultural production and indeed our increasingly confusing relationships with the objects around us? With that in mind, in this thesis I ask the following research question: how are networks of film production formed and maintained in Beirut? Based on an 'insider' ethnography of various film projects weaved into a mixed-methods social network analytic methodology, I adopt a relational sociological approach that conceives of production networks as akin to social worlds and find three analytic planes to delve deeper into: markets, objects and relationships. In relation to markets, I echo the argument that current classification systems of cultural production are too consumption-based and adopt a social network markets framework more sensitised towards production. Here, I find that the cyclical, project-based relationship of patronage that ties production networks to their clients is highly varied and contingent, shaping not only the process of cultural production but also its organisational structure. Further, I argue that the management of these contingencies is key to the potential repeat collaboration not just with clients (and their own social networks), but fellow producers as well. But past projects do not simply disappear once completed, they might well come back to haunt their makers. Drawing upon ethnographic and recent historical data on a number of web-series that emerged out of Beirut between 2009 and 2012, I compare using two-mode networks the past and more recent projects my interlocutors were involved in. Here, I find that one's past projects shape one's future by conducing or hindering their chances of finding new work. Moreover, and perhaps more importantly, I find that filmmakers (and those around them) increasingly define themselves (and are defined by others) in relation to the past projects they have done. Over time, though, as filmmakers collaborate on an increasing number of films, their relationships take on deeper characteristics than monochrome economic considerations. Here I draw upon the notion of embeddedness to shed light on emergent meaning at the network level across a number of projects and, therefore, the emergent social world-ness of networks. While the first set of findings relates to debates in the sociology of work and the second to those in the sociology of cultural production, my final analysis shows just how intimately the two are connected. I conclude by highlighting the potential of empirically-grounded relational sociological approaches to finessing our understandings of cultural work in its economic, social, but also material and technical contingencies.

Improving lessons learnt outcomes in multi-phase project environments

Fuller, Paul A. January 2011 (has links)
The capture and beneficial application of learning from past experiences in projects has been an area of interest and debate for many years. The implementation of lessons learnt is commonly acknowledged as difficult. Existing studies point to the deficiencies in current practice but few propose practical approaches to improve the situation. A key barrier to learning in projects is the time-critical nature of most projects which makes the creation of time and space to learn and then apply the resultant learning problematic. Other inhibitors include the variety and temporality of project teams, the geographical spread of many projects and client pressures to reduce costs. The aim of this research was to improve project learning processes in multi-phase project environments through the identification and application of relevant organizational learning and knowledge management theories. The research was based on a single company longitudinal case study in an infrastructure support services organization. An event-based approach to project lessons was developed which focuses on benefits realisation and measurement. The processes employed overcome some of the key barriers to the effective capture of lessons learnt and their subsequent implementation i.e. shortage of time, different learning styles of individuals, lack of effective capture mechanisms, poor articulation of benefits realisation, lack of management sponsorship. A model was also developed which acts as a multi-faceted lens which aids the understanding of the dynamics of project-based learning. The model was tested through a series of workshops. In order to assist the roll-out of the new approach across the case study organisation and outline implementation guide that has been developed. The approach can also be promoted externally to improve project management practice across the wider construction industry. In addition, the study also revealed that event-based enactment of complex/abstract theories can be used as a tool to create improved praxis by overcoming the need to explain the theories to the actors involved. The main contribution to research is the development of a new approach which extends existing theory in the areas of learning, knowledge management and boundary objects in multi-phase project contexts. It achieves this through the synergistic use of the theories employed which support the development of reflective practitioners with the skills to engender a 'learning how to learn' culture within project-based environments. Further testing of ongoing benefits monitoring and establishing causality is needed. Overall, the methodology developed is highly adaptable and can be used by others in different organizational contexts to improve organizational learning, business performance, client satisfaction and wider stakeholder outcomes.

The objective of this thesis is to study the fluid oscillation modes in compact stars, understand their properties and infer stellar structures from their frequencies. The first part of the thesis focuses on the Newtonian theory of stellar pulsation and the Cowling approximation (CA), which neglects the change in gravitational potential. We modify the conventional CA, devise a more accurate version of the CA and calculate the first-order correction to the conventional CA. In the second part, we apply the variational approximation method proposed by Chandrasekhar [Astrophys. J. 139,664 (1963)] and δ-perturbation expansion proposed by Bender et. al. [J. Maths. Phys. 30, 1447 (1989)] to explain the universality in the relationships between the fundamental mode frequency and the moment of inertia of neutron stars, which was discovered by Lau et. al. [Astrophys. J. 714, 1234 (2010)]. We reveal that stiff equations of state are the conditions for the observed universality. In the third part, we consider the relativistic pulsation formulation and relativistic CAs for compact stars. We unify several known CAs with a single second-order differential equation. We also extend the modified CA derived from the formalism established by Allen et. al. [Phys. Rev. D 58, 124012 (1998)] to include the effect of buoyancy. Finally, we find the first-order and the second-order post-Newtonian expansions for the nonradial pulsations in quark stars. We derive an analytic formula expressing the fundamental mode frequency in terms of the compactness of quark stars. As a result, we are able to verify the universality mentioned above for quark stars. / Thesis M.Phil.
