The cosmological rest frame

The analysis of the uniformity of a spherically averaged Hubble expansion in the Local Group frame of reference by Wiltshire, Smale, Mattsson and Watkins (2013) is extended. We carry out an investigation to constrain the frame of reference from which the spherically averaged Hubble expansion is the most uniform by applying arbitrary Lorentz boosts to the data. The proposition of a systematic boost offset between the Hubble expansion in the Local Group and CMB reference frames is verified within statistical uncertainties. This evidence further supports the claim that the Local Group is closer to the frame of reference in which Hubble expansion should be considered. We subsequently carry out a statistical analysis in search of a frame of minimum expansion variation and find consistent results with the systematic boost offset analysis. However, there is a considerable degeneracy to perform boosts in the plane of the galaxy, which may be a consequence of a lack of constraints from the Zone of Avoidance where data is absent. The COMPOSITE sample of 4,534 galaxies is used primarily, with the key results repeated with the recently released Cosmicflows-2 sample of 8,162 galaxies. The treatment of Malmquist distance bias is investigated in the context of the Cosmicflows-2 and COMPOSITE samples. We find systematic differences in the inclusion of the large SFI++ subsample into these catalogues. These differences are explored and the origin of Malmquist distance bias reviewed. We find the Cosmicflows-2 data produces results which naively suggest more variation of cosmic expansion than would be expected in any cosmological model when the methods of Wiltshire et al. are applied. We trace this discrepancy to the fact that the distribution Malmquist biases have not been corrected for in the Cosmicflows-2 survey.

A search for transiting exoplanets in eclipsing binary stars

This study presents the development of an observing program to pursue the idea of looking for transiting exoplanets in eclipsing binary stars. The various kinds of orbits a planet might have in a binary system are explored. From this it is shown how to anticipate the possible orbits a planet might have in a given star system. The potential detectability of a planet in a binary system is also analyzed. Together these guidelines enable observers to rank targets by the likelihood that a detectable planet might exist in the system. The results of observations by a team at Ball State University of five binary star systems chosen with these guidelines are presented. / Department of Physics and Astronomy

Weak gravitational lensing and intrinsic galaxy alignments

This thesis describes an investigation into weak gravitational lensing, a unique and powerful astronomical tool for the study of dark matter on large scales. Lensing distorts background images, inducing correlations in the observed ellipticities of galaxies, and these correlations can be used to estimate many characteristics of the Universe. Key to all weak lensing studies is a reliable and unbiased method to detect weak lensing distortions from observed galaxy images that are contaminated by Earth and telescope-based shearing and smearing distortions. A new galaxy model-fitting technique is presented that has been developed in order to satisfy this requirement, which will also permit future signal-to-noise optimised measurements of weak lensing shear. Model-fitting provides a good alternative to the standard scite{KSB} method (KSB), and comparisons between the two techniques are drawn from an analysis of deep {it R} band imaging from the COMBO-17 survey, revealing strong evidence for the presence of bias in KSB galaxy shape measurement. With the galaxy model-fitting technique, an investigation into the effectiveness of the Oxford Dartmouth Thirty degree survey (ODT) for gravitational lensing studies is presented, resulting in the detection of weak gravitational lensing by large scale structure, or `cosmic shear', in 0.7 square degrees of the best seeing ODT images. One concern for all cosmic shear studies is that the weak lensing signal, manifest in the weakly correlated ellipticities of distant galaxies, is contaminated by the intrinsic alignment of close galaxy pairs, potentially induced during galaxy formation by physical interactions such as tidal forces. This contamination is investigated theoretically, through numerical simulations, and observationally, with an analysis of the COMBO-17 survey and the study of published results from the Red-sequence Cluster survey and the VIRMOS-DESCART survey, concluding that the intrinsic alignment effect is at the lower end of the range of theoretical predictions. The impact of intrinsic galaxy alignments on cosmological parameter estimation is investigated, with an analysis of the weak lensing results from the COMBO-17 survey. When marginalising over the observationally constrained intrinsic alignment signal, the amplitude of the matter power spectrum sigma_8 is reduced by ~0.03 to sigma_8(Omega_m / 0.27)^{0.6} = 0.71 pm 0.11, where Omega_m is the matter density parameter. With distance information from either spectroscopy or photometric redshifts, the down-weighting of nearby galaxy pairs in weak lensing analysis can be optimised to virtually eliminate the systematic errors in the shear signal arising from intrinsic galaxy alignments, leaving a much smaller, largely statistical error. This method is applied to the photometric redshift sample of the COMBO-17 survey. Weak lensing measurements from the forthcoming SuperNova/Acceleration Probe weak lensing survey (SNAP), and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope Legacy survey, are expected to be contaminated on scales >1 arcminute by intrinsic alignments at the level of ~ 1% and ~2% respectively. Division of the SNAP survey for lensing tomography significantly increases the contamination in the lowest redshift bin to ~7% and possibly higher. Removal of the intrinsic alignment effect by the downweighting of nearby galaxy pairs will therefore be vital for the lensing tomography studies of SNAP.

Measurements of optical turbulence on the Antarctic Plateau and their impact on astronomical observations.

Atmospheric turbulence results taken on the Antarctic plateau are presented in this thesis. Covering two high sites: South Pole and Dome C, this work describes their seeing and meteorological conditions. Using an acoustic sounder to study the turbulence profile of the first kilo- metre of the atmosphere and a Differential Image Motion Monitor (DIMM) to investigate the integrated seeing we are able to deduce important at- mospheric parameters such as the Fried parameter (r0) and the isoplanatic angle (??0). It was found that at the two sites, the free atmosphere (above the first kilometer) was extremely stable and contributed between 0.2" and 0.3" of the total seeing with no evidence of jet or vortex peaks of strong turbulence. The boundary layer turbulence is what differentiates the two sites. Located on the Western flank of the plateau, the South Pole is prone to katabatic winds. Dome C on the other hand is on a local maximum of the plateau and the wind conditions are amongst the calmest in the world. Also linked to the topography is the vertical extent of the temperature in- version that is required to create optical turbulence. At the South Pole the inversion reaches 300 m and only 30 m at Dome C. This difference results in relatively poor seeing conditions at the South Pole (1.8") and excellent at Dome C (0.27"). The strong correlation between the seeing and the ground layer meteorological conditions indicates that even better seeing could be found at Dome A, the highest point of the plateau. Having most of the turbulence near the ground is also incredibly ad- vantageous for adaptive optics. The isoplanatic angle is respectively 3.3" and 5.7" for the South Pole and Dome C. This is significantly larger than at temperate sites where the average isoplanatic angle rarely exceeds 2". This means that wider fields can be corrected without the complication of conjugation to specific layers. For such purpose the potential is even more interesting. We show that ground conjugated adaptive optics would decrease the natural seeing to 0.22" for a wide field of 10 and 0.47" for a field of 1" at the South Pole. At Dome C the results are less impressive due to the already excellent seeing, but a gain of 0.1&quote can still be achieved over 1&quote. These results show that high angular resolution observations can be done better on the Antarctic plateau than any other known site.
