Database for Storing and Analyzing Tweets Posted During Disasters

Saha, Debarshi January 1900 (has links)
Master of Science / Department of Computer Science / Doina Caragea / In the last few decades, we have witnessed many natural disasters that have shaken the nations across the world. Millions of people have lost their lives, cities have been destroyed, people have gone homeless, injured and their lives have been affected. Sometimes hours or even days after a disaster, people are still stuck in the disaster sites, powerless, homeless and without food, as the rescue teams do not always get information about people in need in a timely manner. Whenever there is a natural disaster like a hurricane or an earthquake, people start tweeting about it. Most of the tweets are posted by users who are in the disaster sites, and may contain information about victims of the disaster: where they are and what the problem is, in what areas the rescue teams should work or focus on, or if someone needs special help. Such information can be very useful for the response teams, which can leverage this information in the recovery or rescue process. However, rescue team are faced with an information overload problem, due to the large number of tweets they need to sift through. To help with this issue, computational approaches can be used to analyze and prioritize information that may be useful to the rescue teams. In this project, we have crawled tweets related to natural disasters, and extracted useful information in CSV files. Then, we have designed and developed a database to store the tweets. The design of the database is such that it will help us to query and gain information about a natural disaster. We have also performed some statistical analysis, such as deriving word clouds of the tweets posted during natural disasters. The analysis shows the areas where the users who post tweet about disaster are highly concerned. The word cloud analysis can help in comparing multiple natural disasters to understand patterns that are common or specific to disasters in terms of how Twitter users talk about them.

The characterization of African horsesickness virus VP7 particles with foreign peptides inserted into site 200 of the VP7 protein top domein

Kretzmann, Heidi 15 May 2007 (has links)
African horsesickness virus (AHSV) VP7 development as a particulate vaccine system, for human and veterinary use, is based on the observation that VP7 forms hexagonal crystalline structures which can be exploited to present epitopes to the immune system. VP7 can be produced in large amounts by means of the baculovirus expression system and is easily purified. In order to display an epitope or small peptides in the VP7 top domain several VP7 display vectors have been constructed that will allow the insertion of peptides into at least three different amino acid sites. These vectors are VP7mu144, VP7mu177 and VP7mu200. Vector VP7mu177 in which different peptides were inserted into site 177 has been investigated by Rutkowska (2002). The aim of this investigation is to insert the same peptides into site 200 and compare the constructs with regard to assembly into VP7 particles, structure, stability and antigenicity. These VP7 vectors have to be characterized to determine which of these mutant sites will elicit the best immune response. Insertion mutants were made of the major core protein of AHSV VP7 serotype 9 at specific amino acid positions for the possible use as a subunit vaccine by F. Maree (2000). In this study HIV-1 subtype C ALDSWK and RVLAIERYLKD epitopes with flanking regions were cloned using restriction enzyme tagged PCR products. The recombinants were expressed using the baculovirus expression system. The insertion of HIV epitopes in the vectors did not significantly alter the protein expression levels. However, the chimeric VP7mu200 and VP7mu177 proteins did not show the characteristic crystalline structures observed with VP7mu200, VP7mu177 and unmodified VP7 in insect cells. Scanning Electron Microscopy revealed flat, rounded particulate structures with a rough to layered surface. The insertion of 50, 53 and 101 amino acids thus abolishes the smooth hexagonal crystalline formation characteristic of the VP7 protein. This is partly due to steric interference which most likely disrupted the hydrophobic bonds. The structural disruption of the VP7 particle observed with the 50 aa insertion is not further distorted in the 101 aa insert. Comparative studies show VP7mu200 to be more sensitive to the hydrophobic nature of an insert with regards to particle assembly than VP7mu177. VP7mu177 with and without HIV epitopes assemble into large particles predominantly found in fractions 1-4 at the bottom of a sucrose density gradient. VP7mu200 with a double HIV insert predominantly assembles into large particles (fractions 1-4) and the single HIV inserts assemble into predominantly smaller particles (fractions 5-8). Mechanical lysis of the infected cells containing the chimeric VP7mu200 particles compared to detergent treatment of similarly infected samples reveal possible lipid association suggesting that VP7mu200 may form inclusion bodies. Despite differences in particle assembly between the vectors, both chimeric VP7mu177 and chimeric VP7mu200 particles were shown to be antigenic. Future prospects include conformation and immunology studies pertaining to immunizations with the chimeric proteins, analysis of sera to ascertain if antibodies have been raised as well as neutralization assays to distinguish between the capabilities of the different insertion sites. / Dissertation (MSc (Genetics))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Genetics / unrestricted

A typological approach to word-order literalism as an indication of Saint Jerome's translation technique in the Vulgate

January 2020 (has links)
archives@tulane.edu / Despite the important role played by St. Jerome (331–420) in the history of translation, his own translations have suffered some neglect when it comes to detailed investigations of his theory and praxis. In particular, the distinction he espoused between his ordinary sense-for-sense mode of translating and the more literal mode he used when translating the Holy Scriptures – “where even the order of the words is a mystery” (Epistle 57.5.2; ubi et verborum ordo mysterium est) – has been overlooked or even denied by some scholars, often with the assumption that all of his translations were produced in a more or less sense-for-sense manner. Taking as a basis the relative independence of the criteria by which a translation may be considered literal, this study examines the single parameter of word order (highlighted by Jerome himself) through a broadly typological and even statistical approach, in order to test the thesis that within St. Jerome’s oeuvre, Scripture translation, as a genre, licenses different rules of language usage. The demonstration of a word-order literalism which employs an over-abundance of marked syntactic patterns in Jerome’s translations of selected Old Testament books gives an indication of one aspect of his translation technique in the Vulgate. Quantitative data were obtained from three separate corpora, representing the genres investigated for this study: (1) a sampling of St. Jerome’s original compositions (i.e., texts which are not translations), providing something of a control by which to accurately measure variations from his standard word orders; (2) a sampling of his non-scriptural translations; and (3) a sampling of his translations of Old Testament books included in the Vulgate. Within each of these three corpora, three aspects of word order are analyzed: (1) the collocation of genitives with the nouns they limit; (2) the collocation of demonstrative adjectives with their nouns; and (3) the placement of verbs in their clauses. Typological inconsistency and statistically significant variations in word order across corpora, as well as the actual degree of correspondence of the translations to the word orders of their source texts, are brought to bear on the thesis. / 0 / Kevin Redmann

Första, andra, tredje. Såld! : En kvalitativ studie om hur e-service quality påverkar konsumenternas köpbeteenden inom nätauktioner / Going Once, Going Twice. Sold!

Estedahl, Ludwig, Gasslander, Axel January 2020 (has links)
Auctions are not a new concept and similar services have been used for decades and online auctions have had a positive development through digitalization. In a time when focus lies on sustainability, online auctions are becoming increasingly important through their work with circular consumption. Therefore, it is important that online auctions continue to evolve to reduce the climate footprint. The purpose of the study is to gain a deeper understanding of how e-service quality affects consumers' purchasing behavior at online auctions. This study aims to identify factors that affect consumers in the nuance of e-service quality. To measure the quality of service, the study has used the model e-service quality developed by Parasuraman, Zeithaml and Berry (1988). Along with e-service quality, the study of the buying process (Solomon, 2018) has been used to find connections between perceived service quality and the consumer's buying behavior. The study's question is answered with a qualitative method and an abductive approach. The study has obtained empirical data through semi-structured interviews. The interview questions were formulated based on the six dimensions of e-service quality identified by Zeithaml, Parasuraman and Malhotra (2002).Finally, empirical data were analyzed together with the different steps of the buying process. The study indicates that there are no major differences in the responses of the different interviewees. With the help of the study, we can see clear patterns and ensure which dimensions in e-service quality have the greatest impact on the consumer's buying behavior. With the advancement of digitalization, this area is interesting for further studies to streamline circular consumption and thereby reduce the climate footprint.
