Thesis advisor: Joseph O'Keefe / This qualitative case study examined how central office administrators (COAs) and principals in one school district made sense of the new Massachusetts Model System for Educator Evaluation (MMSEE) and how COAs communicated their understanding and expectations of MMSEE to principals. Specifically, this study utilized the sensemaking property of enactment as central to its conceptual framework; thus, sensemaking was defined by what COAs enacted to implement MMSEE for principal evaluation. Data gathered from semi-structured interviews with COAs and principals revealed that COAs and principals lacked consistent understanding of MMSEE implementation. The data also illustrated that COAs and principals viewed communication about MMSEE in different ways. The study indicated that the district has invested in developing principals to be instructional leaders but has not yet created coherence between district initiatives and MMSEE expectations. <p>Arbetslösheten i Sverige är i dag högre än på flera år. Ungdomar är en av de grupper med störst andel arbetslösa. Tidigare studier har visat att när en person känner att den har svårt att få ett arbete kan person motivation att söka arbete minska. Även längden på arbetslöshetsperioden påverkar motivationen. Arbetsförmedlingen har som uppgift, bland annat att kontrollera att arbetslösa ungdomar följer sina uppgjorda handlingsplaner, men också att motivera de arbetssökande. Syftet med denna studie (n=132) är att undersöka hur de arbetssökande ungdomarna anser sig bli motiverade, trots arbetsförmedlarnas dubbla roller. Studien visade att bemötande, engagerande och tilltro till den arbetssökandes förmåga att få ett arbete var mest betydelsefullt för ungdomarnas motivation att söka arbete.  </p>

Assessment and enhancement of decision-making models used for the pre-development stages of office developments in turkey

Real estate development involves many complex, dynamic, and uncertain elements. In the pre-development stage, greater uncertainties result from the fact that the space being considered has not yet been created. Considering both the inherent characteristics of the real estate and the inefficiency of the market it operates in, any aid in the investment decision process is believed to add to the quality of the end product. This being the case, most, if not all, of the development companies make office development decisions using some kind of a procedure in the pre-development stage. However low occupancy rates and long payback periods that are being faced, even by the most recently completed Class A office projects in Turkey, show that there are serious deficiencies in these applied procedures and that they lack the necessary and important components of project feasibility analysis, which are basically the market and financial feasibility analysis, that needs to be applied in the pre-development stage of the office development process. That is why this study’s purpose is to explore and identify the deficiencies of the decision-making models currently used by Turkish real estate development companies in the pre-development stage of office development projects and to recommend necessary additions and/or deletions for the enhancement of these company models. To do so, this research involved interviews of ten office developers to identify their go/no-go decision processes in evaluating office developments in Istanbul, Turkey. The study has found that developers tend to fall under three different groups, each following different models: Group I includes exclusively construction companies, Group II includes mixed companies and Group III includes exclusively real estate investment companies. Furthermore, the research has found that similarities and differences among these three groups involve the following: While investment companies seek opportunities based on market research, decisions by construction companies are driven by the availability of land swaps. All three groups emphasize land availability and related title and land-use issues. Although unit-sale continues, there is a gradual shift to income property with the aid of improvement in the financial market, which is also reflected in the decision-making models being used.

Reintermediation Strategies for Traditional Channel : The Case of Office Supplies

With the advent of Internet, On-line intermediaries have put tremendous pressures on traditional intermediaries which might be disintermediated without resort to information technology. The IDR model was thus to bring about the interpretation how traditional intermediaries could regain their competitive advantage by utilizing co-specialized assets and information technology. Office supply is the domain of this research. Through observation of on-line office stationary suppliers and interviews with domain experts, the factors for constructing reintermediation strategies of traditional channel are as follows: 1. The business model of office supply. 2. The characteristics of office stationery procurement. 3. The co-specialized assets of traditional office supplies. These three factors lead to development of questionnaire in the Delphi method implemented in this research. Based upon the expert opinions from the Delphi method and the review of business model implemented by the domestic on-line stationary suppliers, this research proposed a business model with feature of domestic industry characteristics. The reintermediation strategies proposed in this research have addressed the development of e-commerce solution and the support of customer service. The traditional office stationary distributors might team up with other suppliers and information technology companies to develop a B2B e-commerce solution. As for the customer service, they could provide inventory management for enterprise users based upon their distinctive co-specialized assets. Furthermore, a development of procurement software for office supplies is necessary because it automates the procurement process and facilitates the vender managed inventory service.

Assessment of the impact of large CRTs and flat panel monitors on productivity and quality in an insurance company

This field study evaluates the impact of replacing existing 17-inch Cathode Ray Tube (CRT) monitors with 19 and 21-inch CRT monitors and 18.1-inch Flat Panel Displays (FPDs) on matrices of productivity, visual comfort, and physical discomfort among 30 employees within a large insurance company (Policy Service and Claims). Metrics were analyzed over a five (5) month period. During Phase One (initial eight weeks) of the study, metrics were gathered weekly on 17-inch CRT monitors to establish a baseline of data on productivity, visual comfort and physical discomfort. During Phase Two (12 weeks), each subject used the 19-inch CRT, 21-inch CRT and 18.1-inch FPD for two weeks, respectively interspersed with other subjects in the study utilizing 17-inch monitors for the same time period. Initially, it appears that the 19-inch monitor enables users to enter more keystrokes per hour ( x19 =1894) than its 17-inch counterpart ( x17=1721) which would be a productivity enhancement. However, this value is not statistically significant (p>0.34). Analysis of additional performance metrics yielded similar results (p>0.2). The users’ level of visual comfort increased with all test display units over their existing 17-inch counterpart (p<0.023), but the data was not meaningful due to the minute difference between their mean values (&#8710;<0.75). Physical discomfort metrics were analyzed among all of the monitor treatments. Most employees were relatively comfortable through the duration of the study. Mean values across all physical discomfort metrics measured were less than one on a Borg scale of zero to ten, but none of the values among treatments were significant (p>0.31). Anecdotally, the users preferred the larger monitors.
