GPS time correlation and its implication for precise navigation

Roberts, William David Summerfield January 1993 (has links)
The Global Positioning System (GPS) is a satellite navigation system which, when fully operational, "will provide highly accurate position and velocity information in three dimensions, as well as precise time, to users around the globe 24 hours a day" (Anon, 1990). GPS can be operated under all weather conditions, with the only restriction being that the user must be able to receive radio signals from the satellites. Such a comprehensive positioning system has never been previously available, and thus GPS is currently being used for a diverse range of applications. This thesis is focused at the application of GPS for the offshore oil industry which is requiring increasingly higher instantaneous positioning accuracies. The GPS system and real-time positioning techniques are described, along with the main error sources that limit the available accuracy. The suitability of using GPS observations in a standard set of mathematical algorithms, the Kalman filter, in order to obtain position and velocity information has been examined. This is carried out by analysing the observations in order to determine some statistical properties that are usually ignored during the processing and data spanning a two year period has been analysed. The effect that these properties have on the resultant position and its precision was ascertained, finding that position discrepancies were insignificant but their associated precisions were highly dependent on the statistical properties were highly dependent of the data sets. Along similar lines., the ability of the Kalman filter to detect blunders, or gross errors, within GPS-type observations was analysed showing that the relevant test statistics performed sub-optimally and, again, this was dependent on the properties of the data.

Tertiary calcareous nannofossils from the central and southern North Sea Basins, and their biostratigraphical application

Gallagher, Liam Thomas January 1988 (has links)
Material from the Tertiary of 12 released Shell/Esso exploration wells from the central and southern North Sea basins was studied (739 samples) to elucidate on the distribution and character of calcareous nannofossils in this commercially valuable area. The biostratigraphical distribution of the calcareous nannofossils is outlined, together with brief remarks on the lithology and wireline log responses in each well. Remarks on the distribution of foraminifera were supplied by G. K. Gillmore as part of a parallel study. Comparative material from sites in southern England (London Clay Formation, North London; Thanetian, Pegwell Bay; and Palaeogene of the Isle of Wight), Alabama (Lone Star Cement Quarry, St. Stephen's), New Zealand (William's Bluff near Oamaru, and Hampden Beach), South Atlantic (DSDP 36-329-29-1,36-329- 30-2), Hatton-Rockall Basin (DSDP 12-117-2-3), and Blake Plateau off Florida was also used during the study (70 samples). These localities were selected and analysed for correlation of stratigraphical levels (e. g. Late Oligocene of the Hatton-Rockall Basin), for comparison with low latitude assemblages at certain stratigraphical levels (e. g. Late Eocene of Alabama) or for close examination and scrutiny of species of Reticulofenestra (e. g. Hampden Beach, New Zealand). A brief overview of previous work in this area, the geological history of the North Sea Basin, and the development of oil exploration is given together with sampling strategies and procedures in the introductory chapter. A new method for examining the same specimen in both light and scanning electron microscopes is established which utilises materials and methodology routinely employed in nannopalaeontology, thus enabling the maximum amount of information to be derived from each specimen. Each well is discussed individually in sections relating to blostratigraphically important levels. The lithology, wireline log responses, and foraminiferal data (where available) are used to supplement and complement the calcareous nannofossil data and to build up an outline stratigraphy for each well (see Figs. 22-31). The result of the biostratigraphical study is the proposal of a biozonation scheme for the central and southern North Sea Basins (NS zones 1-23, largely based on the FDO of species) which covers more of the Tertiary, in finer detail, than any of the previously published schemes, and a tentatively proposed joint calcareous nannofossil/foraminifera b1ozonation scheme. The NS (abbreviation for North Sea) biozonation scheme is compared with the established schemes for north-west Europe and with those of supposed wider applicability. Using the scheme as a tool of correlation the extensive formations of the North Sea Basin are compared and contrasted with the restricted and often facies variable outcrops of northwest Europe. The taxonomic section is reduced in the interests of brevity, as the majority of the species encountered are established in the literature, however, a detailed examination of the Family Noelaerhabdaceae, in particular the genus Reticulofenestra, was undertaken and comment made on the taxonomy, structure and evolution of the group. The definition of this genus is emended and a comprehensive compendium of species produced to facilitate cross-referencing of forms.

The Corrientes River Case: Indigenous People's Mobilization in Response to Oil Development in the Peruvian Amazon / Indigenous People's Mobilization in Response to Oil Development in the Peruvian Amazon

Lu, Graciela Maria Mercedes 12 1900 (has links)
xiii, 84 p. : maps. A print copy of this thesis is available through the UO Libraries. Search the library catalog for the location and call number. / Economic models applied in Latin America tend to prioritize economic growth heavily based on extractive industries and a power distribution model that affects social equity and respect for human rights. This thesis advances our understanding of the social, political and environmental concerns that influenced the formation of a movement among the Achuar people, in response to oil exploitation activities in the Peruvian Amazon. This study is based on a political ecology analysis and a review of existing literature on local and global relations of environmental issues. The Corrientes River case reveals how Amazonian indigenous people gained competence to demand recognition of their collective rights to health and citizenship. The Achuar people's mobilization was a result of frustration of sterile dialogue with the authorities, the oil companies, and the pressure exerted by local people on their leaders. This mobilization resulted in an agreement that otherwise would likely not have been reached. / Committee in Charge: Derrick Hindery, Chair; Anita M. Weiss; Carlos Aguirre

High Stakes & Stakeholders: Oil Conflict & Security in Nigeria

Omeje, Kenneth C. January 2006 (has links)
No / Nigeria is Africa's largest oil producing country. Oil generates enormous wealth but also extensive and devastating conflict in the country. High Stakes and Stakeholders critically explores the oil conflict in Nigeria, its evolution, dynamics and most significantly, the interplay and consequences of high stake politics for the reproduction and persistence of the conflict. It presents a conceptual anatomy of state-oil industry-society relations and demonstrates how the embedded material interests and accumulation patterns of different stakeholders underlie, shape and complicate both the oil conflict and security. In addition, the book provides key insights into comparable conflicts elsewhere in the global south, developing a logical framework for resolving the oil conflict in Nigeria and for reforming the security sector.

Such flexibility caused an enormous growth in the oil sector, since there were several interested in prospecting for oil in national soil. It happens that in return, the dealer had to pay the state a monthly amount calculated upon a percentage (between 5% and 10%) of the production of oil or natural gas, called royalty. Allied to this, installation of the exploration and production of oil in a particular local industry carries significant social and environmental damage, such as depletion of non-renewable resource, deforestation for infrastructure, territorial consolidation. Thus, the research problem of this study arises: the use of the values passed as royalties should be linked to the negative impacts that cause the production of oil, such as repairing the environment or future generations by compensating resource depletion ? In this sense, this paper analyzes the trends of the contribution of funds from the Royalties in the Municipalities Planning Acu / Mossley brought social development for such localities. For this, we will review progress on the Human Development Index - HDI in these municipalities before and after the significant contribution of royalties, and perform a detailed study on the town of Mossoró / RN, which passes through a cooling of the oil industry / A exploração e produção do petróleo no Brasil evoluiu de forma contundente desde o ano de 1997, ano em que houve a flexibilização do monopólio do petróleo, fato que possibilitou que tal atividade fosse objeto de concessão a terceiros estranhos à Administração Pública.

Towards Sustainable Waste Management in the Sudanese Oil Industry - : a case study of Petrodar Operating Co.

Talballa, Husam January 2010 (has links)
Proper management of different waste streams generated in conjunction with oil Exploration and Production (E&P) activities in Sudan is a major challenge for Petrodar Operating Company (PDOC) inter alia. PDOC generates a range of waste streams that are expected to significantly increase especially during and after the planned expansions. Therefore, there is a growing need for establishing an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) through a systematic approach for enhancing the attempts to redirect PDOC’s efforts towards realizing its commitment to best HSE standards. This study introduces the composition of an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) that incorporates better strategies and practices that particularly suit the case of PDOC’s Central Processing Facilities (CPF) (Al-Jabalayn site), Sudan in accordance with the Waste Management Hierarchy. In the first part; mainly the qualitative characterization of the past, current and the near-future situation at Al-Jabalayn site in terms of waste management strategies and practices are all described and analyzed, followed by the creation of a “waste inventory”. Accordingly the elements of a recommended set of appropriate waste management strategies and practices are identified in order to form a framework of an Integrated Waste Management System (IWMS) that particularly fits the case of Al-Jabalayn site and its operating circumstances. The model framework that has been suggested based on this case study can be promoted, replicated and applied to similar Sudanese E&P sites; operating under same conditions. The adoption of such an approach shall pave the way to diminish the gap between the current situation and the most possible sustainable waste management system in the sector.

Orientadores: Osvair Vidal Trevisan, Boris Asrilhant / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Faculdade de Engenharia Mecânica / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-17T11:45:57Z (GMT). Conhecendo o valor das áreas e a estimativa do nível de competição, é possível subsidiar o processo decisório na elaboração de estratégias de oferta que permitam uma melhor alocção financeira dos recursos e a gestão ótima do portfólio exploratório pretendido pela companhia / Abstract: After 10 years of the ending of petroleum exploration and production (E&P) monopoly in Brazil, the market for those activities has shown to be stable and competitive, providing positive results which attracted both national and international investment for the upstream oil and gas sector. The regulatory agency promotes public licensing of E&P areas through a competitive sealed bid auction, whose rules are clear and known in advance by the companies. This research describes and evaluates the historical data for these E&P licensing, as well as for tenders of marginal oilfield accumulations, under the Brazilian economic scenario and the geologic potential of the country. It also compares oil companies performance regarding investment made in acquiring areas in Brazil to those in US-Gulf of Mexico. A stochastic model for block-value estimation is presented and applied to previous data from Campos Basin licensed areas. In order to estimate the level of competition expected for those areas, an expert system was built using Exsys Corvid®, based on the knowledge captured from 36 specialists in Brazilian public licensing working for 20 oil companies. The proposed methodology is applied to the case of Campos Basin areas and showed to properly estimate the levels of competition expected (high, moderate or low in the bid. By knowing the block-value and the expected level of competition, decision makers are better prepared for formulating bidding strategies that can result in better resources allocation and yield a better exploration portfolio management / Doutorado / Reservatórios e Gestão / Doutor em Ciências e Engenharia de Petróleo
