Exploring the relationship between student performance and department reputation: An example of PhD programs in business and management departments

If companies want to stand out in the competitive market environment to raise customer awareness, they must understand customers¡¦ requirements, interests, and behaviors. In the past, a company gets customers¡¦ information to support decision making by doing market survey or analyzing historical transaction data. Some researches have showed that if a company can integrate market survey and transaction data analysis, the company can get a more comprehensive and complete information about customers. Although previous researches have indicated that it is very useful for a company to make good decisions by integrating market survey and transaction data analysis, there is still little research addressing this issue in education. The study aimed to explore the relationship between information analyzed from historical transaction data and from market survey for higher education. Our research scope focuses on the PhD programs of management schools. The result shows that student performance is strongly related to department reputation. Some suggestions for departments that want to improve their reputation as follows: improving the number of research grants gained from the National Science Council, increasing the number of graduate PhD students as supervisors and increasing the number of published papers and thesis under their supervision, expanding the number of graduate PhD students applying for National Science Council grants, and promoting the percentage of graduate PhD students teaching in public universities. It is evident that education stakeholders can combine market survey and historical data analysis to get more complete information for decision making Finally, this research would also bring up some practical suggestions and promote future research.

Neste contexto, de forma a comparar as funções MDX de um servidor OLAP de código aberto e outro de código fechado, os servidores Mondrian e Analysis Services, por serem bem aceitos tanto pela academia quanto pela indústria, foram respectivamente escolhidos. Para realizar este estudo comparativo, o qual consiste em examinar se existe diferença entre as gramáticas da linguagem MDX usadas por estes servidores, será utilizada a seguinte estratégia: identificar quais funções são específicas de um servidor, quais funções são comuns aos servidores e, dentre as funções comuns (i.e., com o mesmo nome), se existe diferença de sintaxe entre elas. De forma a executar este estudo, será apresentado o cenário de testes aplicados, bem como a ferramenta TestMDX que foi desenvolvida para automatizar a execução dos testes. Por fim, será apresentada uma análise dos resultados obtidos.

OLAP Recommender: Supporting Navigation in Data Cubes Using Association Rule Mining / OLAP Recommender

Manual data exploration in data cubes and searching for potentially interesting and useful information starts to be time-consuming and ineffective from certain volume of the data. In my thesis, I designed, implemented and tested a system, automating the data cube exploration and offering potentially interesting views on OLAP data to the end user. The system is based on integration of two data analytics methods - OLAP analysis data visualisation and data mining, represented by GUHA association rules mining. Another contribution of my work is a research of possibilities how to solve differences between OLAP analysis and association rule mining. Implemented solutions of the differences include data discretization, dimensions commensurability, design of automatic data mining task algorithm based on the data structure and mapping definition between mined association rules and corresponding OLAP visualisation. The system was tested with real retail sales data and with EU structural funds data. The experiments proved that complementary usage of the association rule mining together with OLAP analysis identifies relationships in the data with higher success rate than the isolated use of both techniques.
