Legitimate lies: The relationship between omission, commission, and cheating

Pittarello, Andrea, Rubaltelli, Enrico, Motro, Daphna 06 1900 (has links)
Across four experiments, we show that when people can serve their self-interest, they are more likely to refrain from reporting the truth ( lie of omission) than actively lie ( lie of commission). We developed a novel online "Heads or Tails" task in which participants can lie to win a monetary prize. During the task, they are informed that the software is not always accurate, and it might provide incorrect feedback about their outcome. In Experiment 1, those in the omission condition received incorrect feedback informing them that they had won the game. Participants in commission condition were correctly informed that they had lost. Results indicated that when asked to report any errors in the detection of their payoff, participants in the omission condition cheated significantly more than those in the commission condition. Experiment 2 showed that this pattern of results is robust even when controlling for the perceived probability of the software error. Experiments 3 and 4 suggest that receiving incorrect feedback makes individuals feel more legitimate in withholding the truth, which, in turn, increases cheating.

Opomenutí členských států EU vedoucí ke vzniku odpovědnosti za škodu / Omission of EU's member states leading to the liability for damage

Škarpichová, Jarmila January 2012 (has links)
OMISSION OF EU's MEMBER STATES LEADING TO THE LIABILITY FOR DAMAGE RESUMÉ This thesis deals with the responsibility of the member states of EU for damages caused by failure of member states. Both problems are solved in this work, as general requirements for liability relationship, as description of these failures modes with numerous references to case law of the European Court of Justice. Indeed, case law represented a huge range of sources for this thesis. To sum up the work into several points, we can start by making a breakthrough in the issue of liability in the European Union which Francovich case meant. This case established the rule that it is the responsability of member states to implement EU law properly and in time and provide protection to the rights that follow these standards. This rule was followed by other cases which are called "the first generation of cases liability" by many authors. Typical liability sentence: unlawful act (caused by the EU's institution), the damage suffered by the other party and the causal nexus, was subsequently supplemented by the Schöppenstedt criterion, which established the rule that during the process of adopting EU's legislation must be sufficiently serious breach of the law standards, which serves to protect the individual. The last unification of the...

Omission Phenomena in the American TV-series ”The Wire”

Olsson, Lisa January 2010 (has links)

The aim of this study is to find out what effects the omission of intensifiers, interjections and fillers has on the general English subtitle track in the TV-series “The Wire”. Questions addressed in the study include the possible reasons for such omissions, and the consequences of applying omission strategies in this context. Thirteen episodes of the series were investigated in order to see to what extent these three types of words were omitted, and how that affected the experience when watching the series. The investigation showed that the majority of all omitted words in the subtitle track belonged to these three categories, and that technical restrictions were the most common reason for the omissions. Arguably, the lack of intensifiers, interjections and fillers made the language more stiff and formal, which in the end affected the authenticity of “The Wire”.

The Color Line and Georgia History Textbooks: A Content Analysis

Mitchell, Michele D 01 August 2013 (has links)
The purpose of this research is to define racialized textbook bias, conduct a content analysis of Georgia history textbooks, and answer the following question: how is race framed in contemporary Georgia history textbooks? A content analysis of nine Georgia history textbooks was completed for grades two and eight. A Du Boisian theoretical framing of race prejudice as the macro-social condition of the micro-social process of race was an integral component of the content analysis. The findings revealed the existence of racialized textbook bias in the form of marginalization, compartmentalization, and omission suggesting the continuation of White supremacy and Black oppression in the process of education in Georgia public schools.

caracterisation des composes impliques par des phenomenes d’interactions perceptives dans les nuances fruitees de l’arome des vins liquoreux / Characterization of the compounds contributing to fruity aroma of desserts wines via perceptual interactions phenomena

Stamatopoulos, Panagiotis 19 December 2013 (has links)
Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of a typical sensory concept for Bordeaux dessert wines. Volatile compounds from several chemical families were identified and correlated with aromatic typicality in these wines. However, the compounds responsible for “key” aromas, particularly those recalling “overripe” fruits, had not previously been interpreted. Classical analysis of wine extracts by GC-MS was not successful in identifing the compounds responsible for these ripe fruity notes. An alternative strategy was developed in this research combining both analytical and sensory studies of wine fractions extracts obtained by semi-preparative HPLC. Omission tests were conducted using preparative GC with cryotrapping in order to evidence the fraction presenting overripe fruit nuances focusing on orange notes. These tests demonstrated the impact of this fraction on the wine aroma, as the overripe fruity note disappeared when this section was not trapped. Multidimensional CPG allowed the identification of a new lactone, 2-nonen-4-olide, typical to dessert wines. Reconstitution and omission tests carried out from wine HPLC fractions or in a model wine medium, highlighted the importance of specific compounds - lactones, eugenol and 3-sulfanylhexanol - with 2-nonen-4-olide, on the overripe fruit aromas expression and particularly on orange notes via perceptual blending. Furthermore, the correlations between the level of typicality of Bordeaux sweet wines and the levels of these compounds were studied. Finally, the evolution of 2-nonen-4-olide was evaluated during the botrytisation of Semillon grapes as well as in wines during aging in barrels.

A causal approach to transitivity

Eu, Jinseung January 2014 (has links)
The present thesis presents a causal approach to transitivity and proposes a model of transitivity based on the view that a single event is a single ‘causal impact’, which consists of a single causation and a single effect. It defines semantic intransitivity as events where the effect is borne by and expressed through the actor and semantic transitivity as events where the effect is borne by and expressed through the patient. It finds evidence for this definition in the phenomenon of ‘selective specification’ of action or result by verbs with actor and patient. Furthermore, it proposes that the verb eat has dual event structures, intransitive and transitive, and uses a Web data test to test and confirm this hypothesis.

The Impact of Intentions and Omissions On Moral Judgments Across Domains

Blahunka, Natalie Jane January 2014 (has links)
Thesis advisor: Liane Young / Thesis advisor: James Dungan / Moral psychologists disagree over whether descriptively different moral violations represent distinct cognitive domains or are in fact unified by common cognitive mechanisms. The Moral Foundations Theory (MFT; Haidt, 2007) offers five different domains of moral transgressions: Harm/Care, Fairness/Reciprocity, Ingroup/Loyalty, Authority/Respect, and Purity/Sanctity. Both intentionality and omission bias (e.g. omissions such as letting someone die being judged less harshly than actions such as killing someone) have been shown to impact moral judgments; however, it remains unclear how these rules modulate judgments across moral transgressions of various types. Here, we investigate the role of intentionality and omission bias across different moral violations to determine if the divide between moral domains represent true cognitive, (as opposed to descriptive), differences. We utilized a 2 x 2 x 5 design to create stories across the 5 domains posited by MFT that were intentional/accidental cases of actions/omissions. Importantly, this study also looks at four distinct moral judgments of wrongness, responsibility, blameworthiness, and punishment to assess the role of these rules across judgments. We found that intent and action play different roles across judgments, particularly when comparing wrongness and punishment. Intent seems to matter more for wrongness, whereas action matters more for punishment. Further, these rules also differ across domains. We found that intent matters more for the individualizing foundations of harm and fairness (versus the binding foundations of ingroup, authority, and purity) in judgments of wrongness and punishment. The difference between action and omission is also more important for the individualizing foundations for punishment. These data suggest intentionality and omission bias manifest themselves uniquely across moral judgments and domains and provide evidence that there are meaningful differences between domains. / Thesis (BS) — Boston College, 2014. / Submitted to: Boston College. The Apostrophe Revisited : Attitudes, errors and implications for teaching in an upper secondary school

Lasota, Jerry January 2009 (has links)

An earlier corpus study on Swedish university students’ errors concerning the use of apostrophes when writing in English (overuse, omission and misplacement) is contrasted to a new corpus study of upper secondary pupils’ texts. The results turn out to be similar: omissions are numerous among the upper secondary pupils, but overuses negligible. The proportionally most common errors are omissions in genitive constructions. This is contrasted to the views of the classes’ teacher, who perceived contractions to be more problematic due to these errors being more numerous. The essay also briefly deals with the teaching and the future of the apostrophe.
