Exploring off-grid electricity production in Sweden: Benefits vs costs / Undersöker off-grid elproduktion i Sverige: Fördelar mot kostnader

Björkman, Jesper, Lundqvist, Simon January 2020 (has links)
Over the past decade, technologies that facilitate household electricity production and storage have seen a rapid development along with a significant cost reduction. Research points to an increased share of household-produced electricity within the existing national grids across the globe. In some cases, self-sufficiency is possible where households are able to decouple from the grid and become independent on their electricity, in other words, go off-grid. Furthermore, this change puts additional pressure on how the electricity system is set up, which, challenges prevailing incumbents to adapt. Depending on the geographical location, circumstances for selfsufficiency varies. Sweden is a country with high seasonal variations with its Northern position, which raises the question of how off-grid households are feasible and, how they can receive traction. To investigate possible changes within large technical systems such as the electricity system, which is a vital part of the society, theories within socio-technical systems have shown much promise. However, these theories often lack the more techno-economic aspect of concrete and future investment costs from a consumer perspective, suggesting an existing research gap. Hence, the purpose of this study is to provide further knowledge regarding off-grid applications in the Swedish Context. This is done by investigating what circumstances could trigger existing electricity consumers to go off-grid. The research process and structure of the report can be interpreted as indiscriminate, however, the study has focused on combining theories surrounding socio-technical changes whilst applying techno-economic modelling to strengthen the work, similar to a dual paper study. Data was collected in the form of a literature review and interviews to provide a holistic representation of off-grid and its nexus to the electricity system. In addition to this, complementing modelling of grid-connected-, prosumer-, and off-grid households were performed. Results point towards a scene where off-grid reaches grid parity within the coming two decades, which, will increase the economic rationale of investing in an off-grid. Opposingly, there is currently no economic rationale in off-grid applications considering the relatively low electricity costs in Sweden as of today. Moreover, conditions show promise if the adopters see beyond economics and, possesses a strong will towards independence. However, implications suggest that the high reliability and low costs of the Swedish electricity grid impedes the ability of new radical innovations to receive traction. Furthermore, this study has contributed by filling the research gap between socio-technical changes and techno-economic projects in regards to electricity systems. Consequently, contributing to the academic field of socio-technical change, it has been shown that the combination of socio-technical change and techno-economic projections is applicable and beneficial. Additionally, it can be argued that the results of this study highlight that the consumer have a greater role in the development of off-grid applications than what the theories suggest. Lastly, the electricity system is a complex mechanism and, to further strengthen the perception of how a relatively new application, as in the case of off-grid, will impact the system, appurtenant suggestions for possible future research within the area are proposed.

Noise and disturbance caused by vehicles crossing cattle grids: comparison of installations

Watts, Gregory R., Pheasant, Robert J., Khan, Amir 17 September 2016 (has links)
Yes / Cattle grids are used on roads and tracks to prevent grazing animals from leaving an open space without fencing onto a more controlled area where access to the road from surrounded land is more limited. They are widely used in the UK at the entrances to common and moorland areas where animals are free to roam, but also on private drive entrances. Typically, they consist of a series of metal bars across the road that are spaced so that an animal’s legs would fall through the gaps if it attempted to cross. Below the grid is a shallow pit that is intended to further deter livestock from using that particular crossing point. The sound produced as vehicles cross these devices is a characteristic low frequency “brrrr” where the dominant frequencies relates to the bar passage frequency under the tyres. The sound can be disturbing to riders and their horses and walkers and residents living close by as evidenced by press reports and the need to consider noise aspects in planning for new installations. For this reason and due to the lack of available information on the size and nature of the problem measurements and recordings have been made at a number of sites in Yorkshire in the UK. In addition, questionnaire surveys of residents living close by and façade measurements have also been used to gauge impact. Results show that there is a wide variation in the maximum noise level produced by cattle grids of apparently similar design. This can be related to impact noise produced by the movement of all or part of the grid as the frame comes under impulsive loading as the vehicle crosses. It was further established that some residents living close to the cattle grids were disturbed by the noise, and in some cases vibration, and wanted them removed or suitably modified. / The work was funded by the Bradford Centre for Sustainable Environments, University of Bradford.

PRIMA - Privilege Management and Authorization in Grid Computing Environments

Lorch, Markus 28 April 2004 (has links)
Computational grids and other heterogeneous, large-scale distributed systems require more powerful and more flexible authorization mechanisms to realize fine-grained access-control of resources. Computational grids are increasingly used for collaborative problem-solving and advanced science and engineering applications. Usage scenarios for advanced grids require support for small, dynamic working groups, direct delegation of access privileges among users, procedures for establishing trust relationships without requiring organizational level agreements, precise management by individuals of their privileges, and retention of authority by resource providers. Existing systems fail to provide the necessary flexibility and granularity to support these scenarios. The reasons include the overhead imposed by required administrator intervention, coarse granularity that only allows for all-or-nothing access control decisions, and the inability to implement finer-grained access control without requiring trusted application code. PRIMA, the model and system developed in this research, focuses on management and enforcement of fine-grained privileges. The PRIMA model introduces novel approaches that can be used in place of, or in combination with existing access control mechanisms. PRIMA enables the users of a system to manage access to their own assets directly without the need for, and costs of intervention by technical personnel. System administrators benefit from more flexible and fine-grained definition of access privileges and policies. A novel access control decision and enforcement model with support for legacy applications has been developed. The model uses on-demand account leasing and implements expressive enforcement mechanisms built on existing low-overhead security primitives of the operating systems. The combination of the PRIMA components constitutes a comprehensive security model that facilitates highly dynamic authorization scenarios and increases security through least privilege access to resources. In summary, PRIMA mechanisms enable the use of fine-grained access rights, reduce administrative costs to resource providers, enable ad-hoc and dynamic collaboration scenarios, and provide improved security service to long-lived grid communities. / Ph. Analysis and Abstraction of Parallel Sequence Search

Goddard, Christopher Joseph 03 October 2007 (has links)
The ability to compare two biological sequences is extremely valuable, as matches can suggest evolutionary origins of genes or the purposes of particular amino acids. Results of such comparisons can be used in the creation of drugs, can help combat newly discovered viruses, or can assist in treating diseases. Unfortunately, the rate of sequence acquisition is outpacing our ability to compute on these data. Further, traditional dynamic programming algorithms are too slow to meet the needs of biologists, who wish to compare millions of sequences daily. While heuristic algorithms improve upon the performance of these dated applications, they still cannot keep up with the steadily expanding search space. Parallel sequence search implementations were developed to address this issue. By partitioning databases into work units for distributed computation, applications like mpiBLAST are able to achieve super-linear speedup over their sequential counterparts. However, such implementations are limited to clusters and require significant effort to work in a grid environment. Further, their parallelization strategies are typically specific to the target sequence search, so future applications require a reimplementation if they wish to run in parallel. This thesis analyzes the performance of two versions of mpiBLAST, noting trends as well as differences between them. Results suggest that these embarrassingly parallel applications are dominated by the time required to search vast amounts of data, and not by the communication necessary to support such searches. Consequently, a framework named gridRuby is introduced which alleviates two main issues with current parallel sequence search applications; namely, the requirement of a tightly knit computing environment and the specific, hand-crafted nature of parallelization. Results show that gridRuby can parallelize an application across a set of machines through minimal implementation effort, and can still exhibit super-linear speedup. / Master of Science

Sustainability and development impacts of off-grid electrification in developing countries : An assessment of South Africa's rural electrification program / Hållbarhet och utvecklingseffekter av off-grid elektrifiering i utvecklingsländer : En bedömning av Sydafrikas elektrifiering av landsbygden programmet

Azimoh, Chukwuma Leonard January 2016 (has links)
Previous studies have shown that provision of sustainable electricity supply to rural households is essential to bring development to off-grid populations. For this reason, most developing countries put large efforts into rural electrification programs to stimulate development and reduce poverty. However, to be sustainable these programs need to recover costs, which poses a challenge to remote low income populations.  This often forces governments and other institutions involved in rural electrification to subsidize the electricity production. It also affects the choice of technology and places a barrier on the level of energy provided in line with the ability to pay for services. As a result of this, most programs have failed to achieve the desired objectives, as the technologies used often do not support income generating activities that could increase the payment capabilities of the beneficiaries and contribute to development. This thesis is focused on the rural electrification program of South Africa, the country in sub-Saharan Africa that has the highest access to electricity. It investigates the success elements that influence the sustainability of rural electrification programs and their contributions to socio-economic development. This was achieved by evaluating the South African program that provides solar home systems to off-grid communities, and a hybrid solar-wind mini-grid project in South Africa. The study also draw lessons from other rural electrification programs in neighbouring countries, i.e. an evaluation of a hybrid solar-diesel mini-grid system in Namibia, and a review of two systems, a hybrid solar-biomass mini-grid project in Botswana and a hydro mini-grid program in Lesotho. The study revealed that hydro based hybrid mini-grid systems provide the most cost effective way of bringing energy services to rural settlements. Regardless of technology, successful programs depend on adequate support from the government, implementation of a progressive tariff system that allows the high consuming high income earners and businesses, to cross subsidize the low consuming , low income users. It shows that it is more likely for rural electrification programs to survive if the design considers the existing businesses, population growth and the corresponding load increase. The thesis further shows that provision of sufficient energy to induce income generating activities is essential to decrease the need for subsidies and to ensure the sustainability of programs. In addition, availability of spare parts and a capable management team is essential for the successful operations and maintenance of these systems.

An Investigation of Run-time Operations in a Heterogeneous Desktop Grid Environment: The Texas Tech University Desktop Grid Case Study

Perez, Jerry Felix 01 January 2013 (has links)
The goal of the dissertation study was to evaluate the existing DG scheduling algorithm. The evaluation was developed through previously explored simulated analyses of DGs performed by researchers in the field of DG scheduling optimization and to improve the current RT framework of the DG at TTU. The author analyzed the RT of an actual DG, thereby enabling other investigators to compare theoretical results with the results of this dissertation case study. Two statistical methods were used to formulate and validate predictive models: multiple linear regression and graphical exploratory data analysis techniques. Using both statistical methods, the author was able to determine that the theoretical model was able to predict the significance of four independent variables of resource fragmentation, computational volatility, resource management, and grid job scheduling on the dependent variables quality of service and job performance affecting RT. After an experimental case study analysis of the DG variables, the author identified the best DG resources to perform optimization of run-time performance of DG at TTU. The projected outcome of this investigation is the improved job scheduling techniques of the DG at TTU.

Tiek atskiro žmogaus, tiek ir šalies gyvenime saugumas – pamatinė vertybė, kuri yra neatsiejama bei labai svarbi ir šių dienų informacinių technologijų pasaulyje. Todėl, natūralu, kad informacijos saugumas tampa vis aktualesne problema. Organizacijose vykstančių procesų saugumui užtikrinti kuriami įvairūs saugumo įrankiai, kurie turi užtikrinti vartotojų ar paslaugų identiškumą (autentifikaciją), apsaugoti bendravimo vientisumą, privatumą, apibrėžti kam yra leidžiama kokius veiksmus vykdyti ir informacijos išteklius naudoti (autorizacija) ir kita. GRID sistemos suteikia galimybę naudotis WS (interneto paslaugų) pagrindu ir ne WS pagrindu paremta autentifikacija ir autorizacija GSI (GRID saugumo infrastuktūrai) užtikrinti. Abu metodai yra pagrįsti tokia pačia baze, t.y. paremti X.509 galinės esybės ir proxy sertifikatų standartu, kuris yra naudojamas identifikuojant pastovias esybes, tokias kaip vartotojai ir paslaugos, be to, leidžia priskirti laikinas privilegijas kitoms esybėms. Darbo tikslas – ištirti sertifikatų sistemą, šios sitemos komponentus, kurie yra diegiami į GRID sistemas bei pasiūlyti savo metodus ar modelius, kaip būtų galima pašalinti esamų sistemų saugumo trūkumus. Uždaviniai: 1. Išanalizuoti GRID saugumo infrastruktūros elementus ir suformuluoti egzistuojančias saugumo problemas. 2. Išanalizuoti suformuluotų problemų sprendimo būdus. 3. Remiantis problemų sprendimo būdais, suprojektuoti sertifikatų centro modelį ir proxy sertifikatų valdymo mechanizmą. 4... AN EFFICIENT DEMAND-SIDE LOAD SHEDDING ALGORITHM IN SMART GRID

LI, YANG 27 September 2013 (has links)
Rapid advances in the smart grid technology are making it possible to tackle a lot of problems in the aged power systems. High-speed data acquisition system, high-voltage power electronic equipment, advanced utility and customer interaction technologies, as well as distributed renewable generation are enabling the revolution in the electric power generation, delivery and distribution. Through the implementation of ubiquitous metering and communication networks, the customers would no longer be a passive receiver of the electrical energy, but instead, an active participant in the power system and electricity market. They can not only sell their own energy to the utility, but also take part in the emergency restoration in the power grid. Nonetheless, some technical barriers are encountered during this revolution, such as difficulties in integrating home automation, smart metering, customer interaction and power system operation into the whole system. This thesis proposes a customer involved load shedding algorithm for both the power system frequency control and the micro-grid islanding. This new algorithm possesses the features of centralized load control and distributed load control, which fully utilizes the advantages of hierarchical communication networks along with the home automation. The proposed algorithm considers the reliability of the power grid as well as the comfort of the electricity users. In the power distribution system, the high-level control centre is responsible for coordinating the local load controllers, whilst the local controller takes charge of frequency monitoring and decision making. In the micro-grid, a centralized control strategy is adopted to better serve the system with the wide set of information available at the micro-grid control centre. The simulation results have demonstrated the correctness and feasibility of the proposed algorithm. Finally, the hardware implementation further tests the validity of the wireless sensor networks serving as the system’s monitoring and communication technology. / Thesis (Master, Electrical & Computer Engineering) -- Queen's University, 2013-09-24 20:01:37.098
