Homestead names as a reflection of social dynamics in Mabengela, Nkandla.Shabalala, Mbali Aldromeda. January 1999 (has links)
Homestead naming has been a Zulu practice since the days of King Shaka. Although this practice has been abandoned by some of the Zulus especially those living in urban areas, it still exists in some rural areas e.g. Mabengela. This study on ''Homestead names as a reflection of social dynamics in Mabengela, Nkandla" , is divided into five chapters. The first chapter 'Introduction' looks at both the introduction to the thesis and also the
introduction to the research area. It looks at the methodology used in this study and also gives a brief background of the life people in Mabengela live. The second chapter 'The Zulu homestead and its social organisation' pays particular attention to the Zulu homestead. It looks at the construction of a Zulu hut, the arrangement of huts in the homestead, the importance of the cattle kraal, etc. It also looks at the division of labour
within the Zulu homestead and the importance of each member of the family in making things run smoothly in the homestead. Chapter three 'Morphological analysis of homestead names' looks at the linguistic features of
homestead names. It looks at the difference between nouns and names, the locative prefixes and suffixes used in homestead names and also looks different stems that homestead names have. This chapter also focuses on homestead names as a morphological exception. The last but one chapter 'The aetiology of homestead names' looks at homestead names as a reflection of social dynamics in the community of Mabengela. It pays particular attention to the reasons for name-giving, time for naming the homestead, etc. It also looks at the different categories in which homestead names in Mabengela have been categorised and what these names reflect about the community of Mabengela. The last chapter is the conclusion of the dissertation. / Thesis (M.A.)-University of Natal, Pietermaritzburg, 1999.

They are divided in 10 groups: (1.) ethnic bynames (type: Hesso, Latinus), (2.) bynames given at birth (type: Willicomo, Gotedanc) (3.) bynames designating relationship (type: Fater, Muatir), (4.) bynames from animals (type: Fisc, Swein), (5.) bynames from plants (type: Palma, Pluoma), (6.) bynames from professions (type: Choufman, Chnehto), (7.) religious bynames (type: Kotechind, Seraphim), (8.) bynames based on physical attributes (type: Barbatus, Panzleip), (9.) bynames indicating intellectual qualities (type: Chusc, Heitar), (10.) negative bynames (type: Unarg, Untol). Herrscherbeinamen in der mittelalterlichen GeschichtsschreibungWagner, Wolfgang Eric 23 September 2015 (has links) (PDF)
Surnames of rulers in medieval historiography. Attempt to classify on the basis of name-giving and use. – Historical surnames and nicknames of medieval rulers are very popular due to their ability to distinguish individuals, and their awareness pointedly. However, the historical research criticized their lack of explanatory power for the actual personality of the signified. The paper, therefore, proposes to turn our gaze away from the conformity of the epithets with the character and deeds of historical figures on the surnamegiving and -using practices including the motives of the authors and users. To this end, a typology is created.

Investigating the onomastic principles of naming an official lamguage: the case of the Sepedi and Sesotho sa leboa (Northern Sotho} language namesJacob, Rakgogo Tebogo January 2019 (has links)
A thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of
Doctor of Philosophy:African languages and linguistics in theSchool of Literature, Language and Media Faculty of Humanities,
University of the Witwaterrand , Johannesburg / The main focus of the study embraced the investigation the onomastic principles and also the socio-cultural factors to be taken into consideration when naming an official language. The fundamental objective of the study was to consider the two names Sepedi and Sesotho sa Leboa, to decide which one should be used and to determine which name is supported by the investigated onomastic principles of naming a language (official).
Research was conducted involving a group of Higher Education students and lecturers; employees at the Sesotho sa Leboa National Lexicography Unit; employees at the Sesotho sa Leboa National Language Body; employees at the Pan South African Language Board; employees at the National Department of Arts and Culture and its sub-departments in Limpopo and Gauteng Provinces; and Traditional Leaders in almost all the District Municipalities that are inhabited by the first language speakers of the language under investigation. The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and the Office of the Public Protector of South Africa were also involved in the study as to obtain a legal and constitutional implementation point of view on the current use of Sepedi and Sesotho sa Leboa as language names in official and policy documentation as one and the same language name while they are not.A mixed-methods research approach, including both quantitative and qualitative methodologies was employed in the study. In this quest, survey questionnaires, interviews, observations and text analysis were mainly considered as methods of data collection. The findings of the study revealed that neither the language names Sepedi nor Sesotho sa Leboa is supported by the onomastic principles of naming a language. An overwhelming majority of the participants in this study opined that the language under onomastic scrutiny should be reconsidered and replaced with a neutral and inclusive name that cannot in any way be associated with the influence of power and politics as well as with ethnic and dialectal status of a particular speech community. In summary, it was found in this study that the language under scrutiny was not properly named in the first place, since both Sepedi and Sesotho sa Leboa were found to have strong ties with colonialism as concomitant part of the Apartheid regime. / NG (2020)

Additionally, motivations that can play any role in naming of children are summarized. The practical part is focused on motivations applied in naming of children in Ústí nad Orlicí district at two groups of parental population. In the first group there are parents whose children were born in the period of 1960-1975 and the second group is formed by parents with children born in 2000-2012. The data from the parents were gathered using questionnaires. These two groups are compared from various points of view - used names, linguistics factors (length, sound aspects of names, relation of the given name to the family name, hypocoristics etc.) and other factors (family tradition, religion, education etc.). Also differences in the approach to male and female names are followed.
