Fourier imaging in a hydrological medium : a test of the linear invariant hypothesis

Hodgson, Robert Thomas 14 February 1971 (has links)
Fourier techniques have recently become popular for the description of underwater image transmission. Two properties necessary for the application of Fourier techniques to any system are those of linearity and invariance. This work describes a laboratory investigation of these properties for a variety of aqueous media. The hypothesis is found to be applicable in some cases and not in others; the principal difficulty is that of time stationarity. / Graduation date: 1972

Multi-layer diffusion approximation for photon transport in biological tissue

Hollmann, Joseph 02 June 2009 (has links)
A method for improving the accuracy of the optical diffusion theory for a multi-layer scattering medium is presented. An infinitesimally narrow incident light beam is replaced by multiple isotropic point sources of different strengths that are placed in the scattering medium along the incident beam. The multiple sources are then used to develop a multi-layer diffusion theory. Diffuse reflectance is then computed using the multi-layer diffusion theory and compared with accurate data computed by the Monte Carlo method. This multi-source method is found to be significantly more accurate than the previous single-source method. The appendix to this thesis also shows the derivation of the extrapolated boundary condition. This boundary condition is utilized to solve for the discontinuity that occurs at the tissue-ambient medium interface. The boundary conditions for common index of refraction mismatches are solved for and listed in a table.

Spectra of the Semiconductor Lasers subjected to Optical Feedback

Wang, Li-Ting 04 July 2006 (has links)
This research investigated the spectra of two different semiconductor lasers subjected to optical feedback. For the vertical -cavity surface-emitting laser (VCSEL),a wavelength selective element (Etalon) was used to feedback one of the transverse modes into the laser cavity. The experimental results showed that the multi-transverse modes could be suppressed to yield the fundamental mode output or a higher-order transverse mode output, in which the side-mode suppression ratio (SMSR) where 14.8 dB and 6.4 dB respectively. For the external cavity AR-coated laser, we studied the feasibility of generating mode-locking pulses by the temporal modulation of orthogonal-polarization optical feedback (OPF). The RF spectrum analyzer was employed to analyze the interaction. The observation clearly presented the spectra of mode- locking-like pulses in the laser¡¦s output.
