A tecnologia de chaveamento de pacotes ópticos comumente utiliza componentes muito complexos, relegando sua viabilidade para o futuro. A utilização de pacotes ópticos, entretanto, é uma boa opção para melhorar a granularidade dos enlaces ópticos, bem como para tornar os processos de distribuição de banda muito mais eficientes e flexíveis. Esta tese propõe simplificações nas chaves ópticas que além de tornarem o pacote óptico viável para um futuro mais próximo, permitem montar redes ópticas complexas, com muitos nós, que operam de maneira auto-organizada. A rede proposta nesta tese não possui sinalização para reserva ou estabelecimento de caminho. As rotas são definidas pacote a pacote, em tempo real, durante o seu percurso, utilizando roteamento por deflexão. Com funções muito simples realizadas localmente, a rede ganha características desejáveis como: alta escalabilidade e eficiente sistema de proteção de enlace. Estas características desejáveis são tratadas como funções da rede que emergem de funções realizadas em cada um dos nós de rede individualmente. A tese apresenta um modelo analítico estatístico, validado por simulação, para caracterização da rede. No sistema de proteção contra falhas, os cálculos realizados para redes com até 256 nós mostram que o aumento do número médio de saltos ocorre apenas para destinos localizados no entorno da falha. Para demonstrar a viabilidade de construção de chave óptica rápida simplificada utilizando somente componentes já disponíveis no mercado foi montado um protótipo, que mostrou ter um tempo de chaveamento inferior a dois nanossegundos, sendo compatível com as operações de chaveamento de pacotes ópticos. / The Optical Packet Switching (OPS) technology usually involves complex and expensive components relegating its application viability to the future. Nevertheless the OPS utilization is a good option for improving the granularity at high bit rate transmissions, as well as for operation involving flexibility and fast bandwidth distribution. This thesis proposes simplifications on optical switching devices that besides getting closer future viability enable the deployment of highly scalable and self-organized complex network architecture. The proposed network operates without resources reservation or previous path establishment. The routes are defined packet-by-packet in a real time deflection routing procedure. With simple local functions the network starts to operate with desirable performance characteristics such as high scalability and automatic protection system. Those desirable performance characteristics are treated as Emerging Functions. For the network characterization it is presented a statistical analytical model validated by simulation. In the automatic protection functions investigation the results for a 256 nodes network showed that the mean number of hops enhancement occurs only around the failure neighborhood. To demonstrate the switch viability, a prototype was fabricated utilizing components already available in the market. The switching time obtained was below two nanoseconds showing compatibility with the optical packet switching technology.

Pre-cross-connected protection architectures for transparent optical transport networks

This thesis presents a collection of studies on the topic of survivable transparent optical networks. As backbone networks increase in capacity, the issue of their survivability grows correspondingly in importance. The transparent optical network offers many advantages as the optical backbone network of the future, but also faces several challenges with regards to network protection. The fundamental question addressed by this thesis is therefore “How can we achieve high availability and failure resiliency in transparent optical transport networks?” We cover the design, characterization, and comparison of several protection architectures, many of them novel, that share the property of pre-cross-connection, a property that is important for protection of transparent networks. The architectures studied include span p-trees, PXTs, path p-trees, p-cycles, FIPP p-cycles, and UPSR-like p-cycles. We first present detailed studies of the PXT, span p-tree, and path p-tree architectures. This includes the development of efficient design algorithms and structural analysis of efficient designs. The results indicate a clear hierarchy of efficiency, with cycles being the most efficient, followed by trails, and then trees. However, we discover that architectures with lower average efficiency can be used to complement more efficient structures in rare cases. We also present a new design method for PXTs that is as capacity-efficient as the prior established method, but produces designs with greatly improved structural characteristics. We then move on to address PXT protection under a collection of real-world design constraints. The results show that PXTs strike a balance between efficiency and flexibility under these constraints. A further study on the problem of failure localization in transparent p-cycle networks demonstrates the possibility of integrating low cost failure localization capabilities into p-cycle network designs. Finally, we propose UPSR-like p-cycles as a way to combine the simplicity and speed of dedicated protection with the flexibility of mesh-based approaches. The results from our design experiments show that this architecture is able to take advantage of mesh topologies in a way that traditional ring-based approaches cannot. We also demonstrate methods by which UPSR-like p-cycle networks can deliver superior dual failure restorability to a select class of high priority services. / Communications

Object-based PON Access and Tandem Networking

abstract: The upstream transmission of bulk data files in Ethernet passive optical networks (EPONs) arises from a number of applications, such as data back-up and multimedia file upload. Existing upstream transmission approaches lead to severe delays for conventional packet traffic when best-effort file and packet traffic are mixed. I propose and evaluate an exclusive interval for bulk transfer (EIBT) transmission strategy that reserves an EIBT for file traffic in an EPON polling cycle. I optimize the duration of the EIBT to minimize a weighted sum of packet and file delays. Through mathematical delay analysis and verifying simulation, it is demonstrated that the EIBT approach preserves small delays for packet traffic while efficiently serving bulk data file transfers. Dynamic circuits are well suited for applications that require predictable service with a constant bit rate for a prescribed period of time, such as demanding e-science applications. Past research on upstream transmission in passive optical networks (PONs) has mainly considered packet-switched traffic and has focused on optimizing packet-level performance metrics, such as reducing mean delay. This study proposes and evaluates a dynamic circuit and packet PON (DyCaPPON) that provides dynamic circuits along with packet-switched service. DyCaPPON provides (i) flexible packet-switched service through dynamic bandwidth allocation in periodic polling cycles, and (ii) consistent circuit service by allocating each active circuit a fixed-duration upstream transmission window during each fixed-duration polling cycle. I analyze circuit-level performance metrics, including the blocking probability of dynamic circuit requests in DyCaPPON through a stochastic knapsack-based analysis. Through this analysis I also determine the bandwidth occupied by admitted circuits. The remaining bandwidth is available for packet traffic and I analyze the resulting mean delay of packet traffic. Through extensive numerical evaluations and verifying simulations, the circuit blocking and packet delay trade-offs in DyCaPPON is demonstrated. The diploma thesis is focused on design of new laboratory exercises on the topic of gigabit passive optical networks. The theoretical analysis is devoted to acquaintance with basic problematics of PON and analysis of individual PON standards. Special attention, besides GPON, XG-PON and EPON standards, is devoted to security issues in PON. The goal of practical section of the thesis is the design of four laboratory exercises. Two exercises are focused on configuring GPON and XG-PON networks in a console environment with the help of exemplary console commands. The goal of the third exercise is to hook up and configure an EPON network using web configuration interface. The fourth exercise is designed for a realization of DoS attack against a fully functioning laboratory GPON network. The objective is to jam the upstream communication bandwidth with laser transmission causing a desynchronization between active network elements.

Táto práca sa zameriava na analýzu vybraných častí GPON rámca pomocou algoritmov strojového učenia implementovaných pomocou knižnice TensorFlow. Vzhľadom na to, že GPON protokol je definovaný ako sada odporúčaní, implementácia naprieč spoločnosťami sa môže líšiť od navrhnutého protokolu. Preto analýza pomocou zásobníkového automatu nie je dostatočná. Hlavnou myšlienkou je vytvoriť systém modelov za použitia knižnice TensorFlow v Python3, ktoré sú schopné detekovať abnormality v komunikácií. Tieto modely používajú viaceré architektúry neuronových sietí (napr. LSTM, autoencoder) a zameriavajú sa na rôzne typy analýzy. Tento systém sa naučí na vzorovej vzorke dát a upozorní na nájdené odlišnosti v novozachytenej komunikácií. Výstupom systému odhad podobnosti aktuálnej komunikácie v porovnaní so vzorovou komunikáciou.

This Master´s thesis provides an overview of wired networks, its parameters, used standards and the deployment possibilities. Moreover, it includes the overall overview about optical networks, its parameters, maximum bandwidth, reachable distances as well as the advantages and disadvantages in comparition with wired networks. The project describes network elements which are used in the optical access network such as media convertors, optical switches etc. The practical part includes results of testing of the network devices in various scenarios. To get a comparable result, the real throughput, the power of each device and compatibility of devices from different producers were measured. At the end I have suggested few scenarios with the usage of optical switches and media convertors for extension of the current optical network. The calculation of costs for building and operation of the network is also included.
