An integrated CMOS optical receiver with clock and data recovery Circuit

Chen, Yi-Ju 24 January 2006 (has links)
Traditional implementations of optical receivers are designed to operate with external photodetectors or require integration in a hybrid technology. By integrating a CMOS photodetector monolithically with an optical receiver, it can lead to the advantage of speed performance and cost. This dissertation describes the implementation of a photodetector in CMOS technology and the design of an optical receiver front-end and a clock and data recovery system. The CMOS detector converts the light input into an electrical signal, which is then amplified by the receiver front-end. The recovery system subsequently processes the amplified signal to extract the clock signal and retime the data. An inductive peaking methodology has been used extensively in the front-end. It allows the accomplishment of a necessary gain to compensate for an underperformed responsivity from the photodetector. The recovery circuits based on a nonlinear circuit technique were designed to detect the timing information contained in the data input. The clock and data recovery system consists of two units viz. a frequency-locked loop and a phase-locked loop. The frequency-locked loop adjusts the oscillator’s frequency to the vicinity of data rate before phase locking takes place. The phase-locked loop detects the relative locations between the data transition and the clock edge. It then synchronises the input data to the clock signal generated by the oscillator. A system level simulation was performed and it was found to function correctly and to comply with the gigabit fibre channel specification. / Dissertation (MEng (Micro-Electronics))--University of Pretoria, 2007. / Electrical, Electronic and Computer Engineering / unrestricted

Optické bezkabelové spoje s velkým dosahem / Long Range Free Space Optical Links

Křivák, Petr January 2009 (has links)
This dissertation thesis deals with a long range free space optical links for communication over the distance of few tens of kilometers in the atmosphere. The problematic of the beam propagation and atmospheric effects influencing the beam and the quality of the communication protocol are discussed. The measuring link is also designed to study the parameters of the communication link work conditions. The measuring link consists of two heads. The transmitter head is designed to use two optical beams with laser diodes at the wavelength of the atmospheric windows 850 or 1550 nm and the overall power of hundredths of mW. The receiver head includes the Fressnel lens. For the detection of very weak signal, the avalanche photodiode is used. In the end of this work, due to the high power of the transmitting optical beam, the laser safety conditions are also discussed, including the deduced optical transmitters construction recommendations.

Charlamov, Jevgenij 27 February 2014 (has links)
The dissertation investigates the optical time domain reflectometer (OTDR) systems. The main object of research is an optical receiver for OTDR. The aim of the work is to create an optical receiver design method-ology to achieve optimal dynamic range of the system for a given band-width, design and investigate integrated fully differential variable gain tran-simpedance amplifier for OTDR optical receiver. Main tasks solved in this work are: perform analysis of OTDR struc-tures, main specifications and suggest possible improvement approaches; analyze main optical receiver noise sources and noise minimization and create generalized noise model; create optical receiver for an OTDR design methodology, that allow calculating avalanche photodiode multiplication factor, transimpedance amplifier feedback resistance and voltage amplifier input transistor dimensions that achieves optimal OTDR dynamic range; design and perform simulations of transimpedance amplifier integrated cir-cuit using AMS 0.35 µm CMOS technology and calculate optical receiver parameters in 0.1–100 MHz range of bandwidths The dissertation consists of four parts including Introduction, 4 chap-ters, Conclusions, References and 1 Annex. The introduction reveals the investigated problem, importance of the thesis and the object of research. It also describes the purpose and tasks, research methodology, scientific novelty, the practical significance of re-sults examined in the paper and defended statements. The...
