As part of a larger effort to improve telemetry link availability, the U.S. Army Yuma Proving Ground (YPG) is currently in the process of upgrading its telemetry receivers. As YPG begins integrating new receivers into existing range infrastructure, the question of where to place these receivers to provide maximum benefit must be considered. Should the receivers be placed at each of the remote antennas or should they be centrally located at the primary telemetry site? Although many Telemetry-over-Internet Protocol (TMoIP) and radio frequency (RF) over fiber solutions exist to transport these data, there are numerous concerns including network and Cybersecurity limitations to consider when implementing either of these approaches. This paper will document the trade study conducted at YPG to explore the benefits of each approach.

Vision-based over-height vehicle detection for warning drivers

Many older bridges and tunnels were constructed using standards by now many decades out-of-date, at a time when trucks and other large vehicles were smaller. A bridge or tunnel strike is an incidence in which a vehicle, typically a lorry (truck) or double-decker bus, tries to pass under a bridge or tunnel that is lower than its height, subsequently colliding with the structure. These strikes lead to an increased cost of bridge repairs, clogged up roadways and increased potential for catastrophic events: hazardous spillage and/or total collapse. Today, Network Rail reports on average a strike every 4.5 hours. There are a number of reasons why strikes occur, and why drivers of heavy goods vehicles sometimes fail to recognise the warning signs, consequently striking the bridge or tunnel. At first glance, it may seem like the problem is a fairly easy one to solve; however, no matter how well planned the road system, human error is an ever-present risk. The research proposes to address the problem of bridge and tunnel strike prevention and management. The intent of the research is to develop an affordable, reliable and robust early warning over-height detection system bridge-owners can implement at locations with high strike occurrences. The research aims to test and validate a novel vision-based system using a single camera to accurately detect over-height vehicles using a set of optimised parameters. The system uses a camera installed at the offending height, which acts as an “over-height plane” formed by the averages of the maximum allowable heights across all lanes in a given traffic direction. Any vehicle exceeding this plane is analysed within a region of interest using a trigger-based approach for accurate detection and driver warning. If the vehicle is deemed to be over-height, a warning is issued to the driver. As a result, prolonging life expectancy of structures while decreasing the cost of repairs, maintenance and inspections.

In this case, a much higher precision A/D converter is used than required by the desired output accuracy. The excess bits are then used to allow the DSP math to give an effective gain to the signal. By a similar function, offset of over 100% can be mathematically removed as long as the input signal does not exceed the A/D input voltage range.

Interconnect optimizations for nanometer VLSI design

As the semiconductor technology scales into deeper sub-micron domain, billions of transistors can be used on a single system-on-chip (SOC) makes interconnection optimization more important roughly for two reasons. First, congestion, power, timing in routing and buffering requirements make inter- connection optimization more and more challenging. Second, gate delay get- ting shorter while the RC delay gets longer due to scaling. Study of interconnection construction and optimization algorithms in real industry flows and designs ends up with interesting findings. One used to be overlooked but very important and practical problem is how to utilize over- the-block routing resources intelligently. Routing over large IP blocks needs special attention as there is almost no way to insert buffers inside hard IP blocks, which can lead to unsolvable slew/timing violations. In current design flows we have seen, the routing resources over the IP blocks were either dealt as routing blockages leading to a significant waste, or simply treated in the same way as outside-the-block routing resources, which would violate the slew constraints and thus fail buffering. To handle that, this work proposes a novel buffering-aware over-the- block rectilinear Steiner minimum tree (BOB-RSMT) algorithm which helps reclaim the “wasted” over-the-block routing resources while meeting user-specified slew constraints. Proposed algorithm incrementally and efficiently migrates initial tree structures with buffering-awareness to meet slew constraints while minimizing wire-length. Moreover, due to the fact that timing optimization is important for the VLSI design, in this work, timing-driven over-the-block rectilinear Steiner tree (TOB-RST) is also studied to optimize critical paths. This proposed TOB-RST algorithm can be used in routing or post-routing stage to provide high-quality topologies to help close timing. Then a follow-up problem emerges: how to accomplish the whole routing with over-the-block routing resources used properly. Utilizing over-the- block routing resources could dramatically improve the routing solution, yet require special attention, since the slew, affected by different RC on different metal layers, must be constrained by buffering and is easily violated. Moreover, even of all nets are slew-legalized, the routing solution could still suffer from heavy congestion problem. A new global router, BOB-Router, is to solve the over-the-block global routing problem through minimizing overflows, wire-length and via count simultaneously without violating slew constraints. Based on my completed works, BOB-RSMT and BOB-Router tremendously improve the overall routing and buffering quality. Experimental results show that proposed over-the-block rectilinear Steiner tree construction and routing completely satisfies the slew constraints and significantly outperforms the obstacle-avoiding rectilinear Steiner tree construction and routing in terms of wire-length, via count and overflows. / text

Consumer Knowledge of Acetaminophen Safety, Dosing, and Identification

Class of 2012 Abstract / Specific Aims: The objective of this study is to evaluate consumers’ knowledge about over the counter (OTC) products containing acetaminophen (APAP). Methods: Doctor of pharmacy student researchers set up a booth at consenting community pharmacies and invited consumers to participate in a 10-15 minute knowledge assessment. The booth contained a table displaying several OTC medication bottles/packages. Adult participants: a) answered baseline questions verbally about their APAP knowledge and associated risks; b) identified OTC products at the booth that contain APAP; and c) calculated and demonstrated dosing of APAP. The researchers asked follow-up questions and assessed the accuracy of the dosing. Participants received APAP educational brochures upon completion. Main Results: Eighty percent of subjects reported not knowing what the abbreviation “APAP” means, and almost half of those who said that they knew what it means were incorrect. Very few participants were able to correctly identify the products containing APAP even with the product packaging information, with the percentage of incorrect responses as to whether a product contains APAP or not varying from 4.9% to 31.6%. More than 40% of the pediatric doses were incorrectly dosed for both of the pediatric formulations, even with the majority of subjects being parents. Conclusions: Consumers are not able to identify which over-the-counter products contain APAP even with the product packaging before them, and they do not know what the abbreviation “APAP” means. Better packaging and product ingredient information should be developed, and the abbreviation “APAP” should be avoided. Pediatric APAP products should be re-evaluated regarding safety and dosing.
