The Oxidative Cyclization of Ketone Carbohydrazones and 4-Substituted Semicarbazones. Thermal Decomposition of 5,5-Diaryl-2-Phenylimino-△^3 -1,3,4-Oxadiazolines

West, Paul Ronald 03 1900 (has links)

The reaction of lead tetra-acetate with ketone carbohydrazones and 4-substituted semicarbazones gave a series of 2-(substituted imino)-△^3-1,3,4-oxadiazolines. Spectroscopic and chemical evidence is presented to establish the proposed structure, and the scope of the reaction is described. The thermolysis of the 5,5-diaryl-2-phenylimino-△^3-1,3,4-oxadiazolines was studied in chlorobenzene solution. The results of kinetic experiments (gas evolution and infra-red) are reported, and the mechanism of the decomposition is discussed. A survey of the literature pertaining to related lead tetra-acetate oxidations, and to decomposition of cyclic azo compounds is presented.
/ Thesis / Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

Oxidative stress biomarkers in blood plasma of moderately exercised horses

Ott, Elizabeth Catesby 06 August 2021 (has links)
Equine athletes are subjected to environmental and physical stressors resulting in oxidative stress that can negatively impact performance. Oxidative stress can result in lipid peroxidation, cell damage, and DNA degradation leading to physiological dysfunction and increased instance of disease. It has been established that humans are able to adapt to oxidative stress when exposed to extended periods of high-intensity exercise, however, this has yet to be established in the equine model. In the present study, we sought to establish patterns of oxidative stress expression immediately following exercise and adaption to prolonged exposure to exercise training in the equine model. Results indicate horses express changes in oxidative stress biomarkers at the onset of exercise training but adapt with prolonged exercise regimes. Future research should focus on mitigation techniques and therapeutics for oxidative stress in equine athletes.

Stability of catfish methyl esters under normal versus accelerated storage conditions

Jongrattananon, Saowalee 13 December 2008 (has links)
Oxidative storage stability was conducted to determine the optimum antioxidant for the production of catfish methyl esters (CFME) for use as biodiesel. Peroxide value, anisidine value, 2-thiobarbituric reaction substances, acid value, iodine value, UV absorbance, and induction period were measured. Antioxidant, stability parameters changed over a storage time of one year when stored at 25°C. The CFME were not stable to oxidation without the addition of TBHQ. When stored at 25°C, oxidative parameters indicated that CFME was a stable product that met oxidative stability standards when TBHQ was added. When held at 80°C for 28 days, the samples with TBHQ were stable to oxidation. However, the acid value rose above the maximum at 28 days. Thus, CFME can be stable to oxidative breakdown when THBQ was added at 800 ppm, but when exposed to high temperatures, one will have to limit water or protect CFME against hydrolytic rancidity.
