A nomenclatura do gênero permanece confusa devido às dificuldades na delimitação morfológica de espécies e às controvérsias na aplicação de um conceito biológico de espécie a amostras alopátridas. Consequentemente, vários autores consideraram espécies descritas no Brasil como sinônimos de O. rufus (Fischer, 1814), dentre elas O. dasytrichus (Schinz, 1 821 ), uma tendência que constitui uma hipótese nula sobre a diversidade de espécies no Brasil oriental. Uma hipótese alternativa de validade destes dois nomes foi proposta em uma revisão mais recente, considerando-os em dois grupos de espécies distintos: o grupo rufus, restrito ao nordeste argentino; e o grupo dasytrichus, incluindo populações do Brasil oriental. A descoberta de duas formas simpátridas de Oxymycterus em Viçosa, Minas Gerais, fenotipicamente similares a representantes destes dois grupos, estimulou investigações sobre o status destas populações como unidades evolutivas e seu relacionamento aos grupos de espécies rufus e dasytrichus, que forneceriam uma base para o teste das hipóteses de co-especificidade destes nomes. Duas abordagens metodológicas foram adotadas para inferências taxonômicas... / Oxymycterus is a diverse neotropical rodent genus distributed at the middle latitudes of South America. The nomenclature of the genus remains obscure due to the difficulties in the morphological definition of species and to the controversies on the application of a biological species concept to alopatric samples. Therefore, several authors have considered the species described from Brazil as synonyms of O. rufus (Fischer, 1814), including O. dasytrichus described from Bahia, a tendency that represent a null hypothesis on the species diversity of the genus in southeastern Brazil. An alternative hypothesis of validation of these names was proposed in a recent revision that considered them in two different species groups: the rufas group restrict to northeastern Argentina, and the dasytrichus group encompassing samples from southeastern Brazil. The discovery of two sympatric forms of Oxymycterus in Viçosa, Minas Gerais, phenotypically similar to members of these groups, prompted investigations about the status of these populations as evolutionary units and their relationship with the rufus and dasytrichus species groups, which provided a framework to test the hypotheses of validity of these names.
