O trabalho de campo foi realizado na Serra do Japi, localizada no setor oeste do município de Jundiaí ('23 GRAUS' 11'S; '46 GRAUS'52'W), no Estado de São Paulo, entre outubro de 1979 e fevereiro de 1982. Aquela região ê caracterizada por vegetação florestal secundária, com vários trechos de campos arbustivos e capoeiras. A floração de C. peruvianus inicia-se em meados de setembro e estende-se até dezembro. As flores são tubulosas, brancas, hermafroditas de ântese noturna e exalam um odor levemente desagradável. O néctar é produzido na superfície interna do hipanto em quantidades muito pequenas, porem a sua proudução é contínua ao longo da noite. As flores começam a abrir por volta das 18: 00 h, quando o pólen j â está exposto nas anteras. O estigma é excêntrico e torna-se receptivo mais tarde (aproximadamente 22:00 h), à medida que se desloca para o centro da flor. A fase receptiva da flor termina por volta das 05: 00 h, ficando o estigma prostrado sobre os elenentos do perianto. Ao longo do trabalho foram realizados vários experimentos de polinizaçao manual. Cereus peruvianus é uma espécie predominantemente auto-incompatível, pois a produção de frutos é mais abundante quando ocorre polinização cruzada xenogâmica, ou seja, quando uma flor recebe pólen da flor de uma outra planta...Observação: O resumo, na íntegra, poderá ser visualizado no texto completo da tese digital / Abstract: This study concerns the repr oductive biology of Cereus. Peruvianus Miller (Cactaceae) particularly pollination and dispersal. Field observations were carried out in the Serra do Japi, located in JundiaÍ Country ('23 GRAUS' 11'S; '46 GRAUS'52'W), São Paulo State, from October 1979 to February 1982. That region is characterized by secondary forest with some areas of bushy grass1and and second growth "capoeiras". The flowering period of Cereus peruvianus starts at about the middle of Septenber and extends unti1 December. The flowers are tubular, whitish, hermaphrodite, with nocturna1 anthesis, exhaling a slight1y disagI'eeable odour. Small quantities of nectar' are produced on the internal surfaces of the hypanthium during the night. The flowers start opening around 18:00 h, when pollen is already presented by the anthers. The stigma becomes receptive later (around 22: 00 h), while moving downward to the center of the flower. The receptivity period of the flower' ends around 05:00 h, when the stigma becomes prostrate over the perianth sements. Several hand-pollination experiments showed that Cereus peruvianus is a predominantly self-incompatible species. The highest fruit set occurs when a flower recehres pollen from other plants (xenogamic cross-pollination). Several insect species visit the flowers of f. peruvianus. After sunset. Agrius cingulatus and Manduca rustica (Sphingidae) are apparently the floral visitor's best adapted to the pollination of that cactus.
