I attempt to capture the simple and fleeting beauty of Washington, DC, before it folds into time. In my representational paintings and monotypes, I want to convey the elegance and serenity of the streets, cars, pedestrians, and the majestic buildings of our nation’s capital. As a native Washingtonian, I’ve always admired the view of the city from across the Potomac River, from sunrise to sunset. I want to share these views and these experiences of my daily life with the viewer.

Whereas certain people start with a recollection or an experience and paint that experience, to some of us the act of doing it becomes the experience; so that we are not quite clear why we are engaged in a particular work. And because we are more interested in plastic matters than we are in a matter of words one can begin a picture and carry it through and stop it and do nothing about the title at all. I believe that this statement by Baziotes has a great deal to do with the way I feel about my painting. Perhaps it is because I cherish the idea that in my painting, and in paintings that I respond to, there is a certain reality which goes beyond words. It is not that I feel painting cannot be talked about, it is that I feel some painting should not be talked about.

Memories of the past are a powerful part of human existence. The pastremembered affects who we are as a person as well as the decisions we make in our lives. As we grow older and time passes these memories begin to fade. Specific details about events in the past become fuzzy or are gone all together. We may still remember what occurred and the emotions felt as it happened but exact records of the events begin to be lost. Is it possible to visually represent personal memories and the coinciding emotions in a way that can convey the said emotions to a viewer? How much of the human experience is common? Can a personal experience and emotion be depicted in a way that is universal and shared by all? / Department of Art
