Det flippade klassrummet : ur ett elevperspektiv

Studien, som utfördes på en kommunal gymnasial och vuxenutbildning, syftar till att undersöka elevers uttryckta uppfattningar av fenomenet "det flippade klassrummet". Det flippade klassrummet är ett arbetssätt som innebär att det som traditionellt sker i klassrummet nu äger rum i hemarbetet och tvärtom. Informanterna, eleverna, fick först uppleva det flippade klassrummet genom att deltaga i lektioner planerade utifrån arbetssättet. Därefter intervjuades de i olika former. Intervjuerna transkriberades och analyserades vilket genererade fem olika kategorier där eleverna på skilda sätt uttrycker sig om det flippade klassrummet. Den första kategorin fick benämningen "flippa klassrummet – teknik och lärande" där uttryckta uppfattningar som berör användningen av den digitala tekniken sorterats in. Den andra kategorin som uppkom vid analysen behandlar uttryckta uppfattningar där eleverna diskuterar hur det flippade klassrummet leder till en anpassning till samhällsförändring. Den tredje kategorin benämns "flippa klassrummet-leder till förändrat klassrumsklimat" där elever uttrycker att det flippade klassrummet erbjuder ett annat klassrumsklimat, i detta fall exempelvis gällande struktur och diskussioner. Den fjärde kategorin berör elevsvar där eleverna uttrycker att det flippade klassrummet leder till effektivt lärande, både i form av direkta effekter men även indirekta effekter. I den femte och sista kategorin behandlar elevsvar där eleverna uttrycker sig om hur det flippade klassrummet inverkar på dem, i både positiv och negativ mening. Resultatet visar att eleverna överlag uttrycker sig positivt om arbetssättet och påpekar både möjligheter och svårigheter. Dessa uttryckta uppfattningar kan och bör tas i beaktning av undervisande lärare.

The Effectiveness of peer instruction (PI) in enhancing pre-service teachers’ understanding of electromagnetism I in a Nigerian college of education

Philosophiae Doctor - PhD / This research study investigated the effectiveness of Peer Instruction (PI) in enhancing preservice teachers’ understanding of Electromagnetism I in a Nigerian college of education. PI as a research-based pedagogy was invented for the teaching of introductory science courses to large classes. Lectures in PI is made of short presentations on the main points, each followed by short conceptual questions known as ConcepTest, posed in a multiple-choice format, on the subject under discussion. Electromagnetism is a branch of Physics where students perform poorly at Colleges of Education in Nigeria. Electromagnetism I covers electrostatics, magnetostatics, current electricity, electrolysis, and capacitance. Each of these themes has different topics under it. Most students studying Electromagnetism I, cannot relate or connect what they learned in the classroom to real-world situations because they often learn by memorization (rote learning).

Aplicação do Peer Instruction no ensino de matemática para alunos de quinto ano do ensino fundamental / Application of Peer Instruction in Mathematics for fifth grade students of elementary school

Este trabalho trata do uso do Peer Instruction como metodologia para o Ensino de Matemática no Ensino Fundamental I. Considerando como problema a dificuldade em ensinar e aprender esta disciplina, busca-se, por intermédio do Peer Instruction, desenvolver nos alunos a capacidade de aprender a aprender. O objetivo principal do trabalho é investigar o Peer Instruction, no ensino de matemática com alunos do quinto ano do Ensino Fundamental I como alternativa na construção do conhecimento matemático. O método constitui-se principalmente da interação entre os alunos com o intuito de promover a compreensão de conceitos matemáticos compatíveis com sua faixa etária. A metodologia adotada no trabalho foi basicamente constituída por questionários, que propiciaram conhecer a visão dos alunos acerca do ensino tradicional da Matemática, e de testes que permitiram avaliar o conhecimento dos alunos por meio da leitura prévia, bem como o aprendizado adquirido após a interação com os seus pares durante a aula. Os resultados quantitativos que tratam da leitura prévia, que embora não tenha atingido a totalidade dos alunos, mostram que esta atividade tem impacto positivo sobre o desempenho dos estudantes. No que tange aos resultados durante a interação em sala de aula, estes demonstraram que os alunos assimilam os conceitos com maior facilidade, bem como são capazes de participar ativamente das aulas, inclusive auxiliando os colegas com maiores dificuldades no aprendizado dos conteúdos. A aplicação do Peer Instruction demonstrou que os alunos se sentem confiantes, uma vez que eles percebem sua capacidade de aprender, e mais motivados, porque a dinâmica imposta pela metodologia ativa adotada durante as aulas desperta o interesse pelo aprendizado de Matemática e, como consequência, os alunos participam mais efetivamente das aulas. Os resultados obtidos neste trabalho sugerem que o Peer Instruction pode ser aplicado com sucesso no Ensino Fundamental I. / This work aims to deal with the use of Peer Instruction as a methodology for Teaching Mathematics in Elementary School. Considering as a problem the difficulty in teaching and learning this discipline, this work seeks for developing the ability of students learning how to learn using Peer Instruction. The main objective of the work is to investigate Peer Instruction in the teaching of mathematics with fifth year students of Elementary School as an alternative in the construction of mathematical knowledge. The method consists mainly of the interaction between the students in order to promote the understanding of mathematical concepts compatible with their age group. The methodology adopted in the study was basically made up with questionnaires, which enabled students to learn about the traditional teaching of Mathematics, and tests that allowed students to evaluate their knowledge through prior reading, as well as acquired learning after interaction with other students during classes. Although not reaching all the students, the quantitative results, which deal with previous readings, show that this activity has a positive impact on the performance of the students. Concerning the results during interaction in the classroom, they demonstrated that students assimilate concepts more easily, as well as being able to participate actively in the classes, including helping other students with greater difficulties in learning the contents. The application of the Peer Instruction demonstrated that students feel confident, once they perceive their ability in how to learn, and more motivated, because the dynamics imposed by the active methodology adopted during the classes rises their interest in learning Mathematics and, as a consequence, students participate more effectively during classes. The results obtained in this work suggest that the Peer Instruction can be successfully applied in the Elementary School.

Nela, alunos devem, após uma breve exposição sobre um tópico da disciplina, responder a questões conceituais de múltipla escolha, chamadas Conceptests, individualmente após um minuto ou dois para reflexão sobre a resposta correta. Dependendo do número de respostas corretas dadas em um primeiro levantamento das respostas escolhidas pelos estudantes, pode haver um momento de dois a três minutos onde os estudantes procuram colegas com respostas diferentes das suas, explicam o raciocínio seguido e tentam chegar a um consenso sobre a resposta correta. Após estas sessões de debate, o professor procede a um levantamento das novas respostas, e discute a resposta correta com os estudantes. Neste trabalho, descrevemos a experiência de aplicação da metodologia de ensino descrita acima a duas turmas de 1º ano do ensino médio do Colégio Estadual Dr. Antônio Fernandes, no município de Miguel Pereira, RJ ao longo do ano de 2014, cobrindo a ementa de Cinemática e Mecânica. Analisamos os resultados de desempenho dos estudantes ao responder aos Conceptests, e verificamos os efeitos da metodologia sobre o engajamento dos estudantes sobre o processo de aprendizagem e sobre o interesse no estudo da disciplina de Física. / Peer Instruction is a student-centered teaching method, focused on the conceptual understanding of a discipline. Within its framework, after watching a mini-class on a given topic, students must answer multiple choice conceptual questions (dubbed Conceptests) individually, after one or two minutes of reflection. Depending on the number of correct answers given to the question in a first instance, students must find a peer who has chosen a different answer, and debate with them explaining the reasoning followed for arriving at the answer of choice, with two or three minutes for that. The peers should, if possible, try to reach a consensus on what the correct answer would be. After these debate sessions, the teacher proceeds to a second round of answers, and then discusses the correct answer with the students. In our work, we present a report on the application of this teaching method to two first-year high school classes from Colégio Estadual Dr. Antônio Fernandes, in Miguel Pereira county, which is part of the educational network of the State of Rio de Janeiro. The work was conducted along the year 2014, and the syllabus was Kinematics and Mechanics. We analyse the performance of students in answering the Conceptests, and we investigate the effects of applying the method on student engagement in the learning process, as well as on their interest in the study of Physics.

Development of Peer Instruction Material for a Cybersecurity Curriculum

Cybersecurity classes focus on building practical skills alongside the development of the open mindset that is essential to tackle the dynamic cybersecurity landscape. Unfortunately, traditional lecture-style teaching is insufficient for this task. Peer instruction is a non-traditional, active learning approach that has proven to be effective in computer science courses. The challenge in adopting peer instruction is the development of conceptual questions. This thesis presents a methodology for developing peer instruction questions for cybersecurity courses, consisting of four stages: concept identification, concept trigger, question presentation, and development. The thesis analyzes 279 questions developed over two years for three cybersecurity courses: introduction to computer security, network penetration testing, and introduction to computer forensics. Additionally, it discusses examples of peer instruction questions in terms of the methodology. Finally, it summarizes the usage of a workshop for testing a selection of peer instruction questions as well as gathering data outside of normal courses.

Assessment Of Two Pedagogical Tools For Cybersecurity Education

Cybersecurity is an important strategic areas of computer science, and a difficult discipline to teach effectively. To enhance and provide effective teaching and meaningful learning, we develop and assess two pedagogical tools: Peer instruction, and Concept Maps. Peer instruction teaching methodology has shown promising results in core computer science courses by reducing failure rates and improving student retention in computer science major. Concept maps are well-known technique for improving student-learning experience in class. This thesis document presents the results of implementing and evaluating the peer instruction in a semester-long cybersecurity course, i.e., introduction to computer security. Development and evaluation of concept maps for two cybersecurity courses: SCADA security systems, and digital forensics. We assess the quality of the concept maps using two well-defined techniques: Waterloo rubric, and topological scoring. Results clearly shows that overall concept maps are of high-quality and there is significant improvement in student learning gain during group-discussion.

The Effect Of Peer Instruction On Sixth Grade Students

This study has aimed to examine effectiveness of the peer instruction on sixth grade students&rsquo / science achievement, attitudes concerning current electricity and retention rates of what has already learnt about current electricity as compared to the conventional instruction. The study was conducted during 2005-2006 spring semester with 121 students from the four classes of two elementary schools in the central Yenimahalle district of Ankara. Current Electricity Achievement Test (CEAT) and Attitude toward Current Electricity Scale (ATCES) were administered as pretest to all groups in order to determine students&rsquo / level of prior knowledge and level of interest toward the subject before the treatment, respectively. Then, treatment started in experimental group. It continued three weeks throughout the current electricity subject. While experimental group implementing the peer instruction, control group continued with their conventional lecturing. Immediately after three weeks, students both in control and experimental groups were post tested with the same test and scale. Moreover, three months after the post tests, delayed post test on the CEAT was also administered to both experimental and control groups. The data obtained from the administration of tests and scales were analyzed by the statistical techniques of MANCOVA / follow up ANCOVA&rsquo / s and repeated measure ANCOVA. Results of the statistical analysis indicated that the peer instruction has significantly greater effect on students&rsquo / science achievement and retention rates as compared to the conventional instruction. However, the statistical analysis failed to show a significant difference between the attitudes of students instructed by the peer instruction and the conventional instruction.

The purpose of the research study is to investigate the effect of peer instruction method on the 8th grade students&rsquo / mathematics achievement and mathematics attitudes in transformation geometry (fractals, rotation, reflection, translation) in crowded classrooms (more than 50 students). Besides, in this study it was aimed to investigate the gender differences regarding mathematics achievement and mathematics attitude. The study was conducted during the academic year 2009-2010. The sample was consisted of 112 eighth grade students from a public elementary school in K&uuml / &ccedil / &uuml / k&ccedil / ekmece district in Istanbul. Two classes, instructed by the researcher, were randomly assigned as experimental and control groups. The experimental group students were taught the subject transformation geometry through peer instruction method, while the control group students were taught the subject transformation geometry conventionally. Mathematics Achievement Test (MAT) and Attitude towards Mathematics Scale (ATMS) were administered to students as measuring instruments. The two-way ANCOVA and two-way ANOVA statistical techniques were performed in order to answer to the research questions. Results indicated that the peer instruction method has significant positive effects on students&rsquo / mathematics achievement and attitudes towards mathematics. Also, it was shown that there is not a significant difference between the female and male students&rsquo / mathematics achievement and mathematics attitudes.

This study aimed to explore the effectiveness one of the interactive engagement method which is peer instruction enriched by concept test on students&#039 / achievement and attitudes toward physics. In this study two types of teaching were used. These are / (1) Peer Instruction enriched by concept test, and (2) Traditional Instruction. For this study, Physics Attitude Test (PAT), Physics Achievement Test (PACT), Observation Checklist (OC), Teaching/Learning Materials were developed. Physics Attitude Test, Physics Achievement Test and Observation Checklist were used as measuring tools. The PACT and PAT were used to assess students&#039 / achievement and their attitudes toward Newton&#039 / s Laws of Motion respectively. The OC was used for treatment verification. The PACT was developed by the help of the findings from the literature. The OC was developed by the researcher. The PAT was adapted from TaSlidere&#039 / s thesis. This study was conducted with 3 teachers, 6 classes and total of 192 10th grade students in the public high schools at Yenimahalle district of Ankara in the fall semester of 2002-2003 academic years. For each teacher, 2 classes were used in the study. The teachers were trained for how to implement Peer Instruction in the classroom. Students from 3 classes participated in Traditional Instruction group and referred as control group, whereas the other 3 classes instructed by Peer Instruction referred as experimental group. The PAT and PACT were applied twice as pre-test and after a three-week treatment period as a post-test to both groups to assess and compare the effectiveness of two different types of teaching utilized in physics course. The data obtained from the administration of post-tests were analyzed by statistical techniques of Multivariate Analyses of Covariance (MANCOVA). The statistical results indicated that Peer Instruction was more effective than Traditional Instruction. Whereas the statistical analysis failed to show a significant differences between the experimental and control groups attitudes toward physics.
