It aims to provide an understanding of the role of prostitution facing the development of the city and the institutions responsible for monitoring it. This is done using police files and crime-processes, which allow us to identify, through a study of cases, some codes of posture and the day-by-day of "mercenary of love" in Porto Alegre. / O presente trabalho é uma análise da ação policial e jurídica frente ao meretrício na cidade de Porto Alegre no final do século XIX início do XX. Objetiva demonstrar um entendimento do papel da prostituição frente ao desenvolvimento da cidade e dos órgãos responsáveis pela fiscalização da mesma. Esta abordagem é realizada através de arquivos policiais e processos-crimes, que nos permitem identificar, através de um estudo de casos, alguns códigos de posturas e o cotidiano das “mercenárias do amor” em Porto Alegre.
