Essays in Labor Economics

Lee, Logan 18 August 2015 (has links)
I model a hiring process in which a candidate is evaluated sequentially by two agents of a firm. Each agent observes an independent signal of the candidate's productivity. I show that if the second agent values a non-productive attribute of a given candidate, that candidate may be less likely to be hired than a candidate lacking the preferred non-productive attribute due to the first agent adjusting their own quality threshold to compensate. I go on to empirically explore the behavior of prisoners in Oregon based on exogenous shocks to the status quo. These shocks include changes in the generosity of sentence reductions available to certain prisoners and the implementation of a variety of policies that have made it less costly for prisoners to communicate with the outside world. I find that prisoners respond to behavioral reviews with improved behavior on the days immediately before and after a review, but increasing available sentence reductions awarded for good behavior does not reduce misconduct rates among inmates. Furthermore, I find that increasing the ability of prisoners to communicate with friends and family using technology has not led to the decrease in in-person visitation that many have predicted. Instead, total communication seems to have increased in Oregon prisons. Given the extensive literature that suggests increased communication with the outside world reduces a prisoner's likelihood of recidivating, this result may indicate that introducing communication technology and making it more affordable may be a cost effective policy to prevent future crimes. The calabozo: virtual reconstruction of a prison cell based on personal accounts

Aroztegui Massera, Carmen 16 August 2006 (has links)
The objective of my research is to create a visualization of a place based on personal experiences. My research addresses this issue through a case study: the visualization of a women’s political prison located in Punta de Rieles, Uruguay, during the Uruguayan dictatorship (1973-85). In June of 2002, I went to Uruguay and interviewed nine female former political prisoners. I asked them to tell me stories about what happened to them during their time in prison. My research aims at relating their experience of prison through a visualization of their stories. The challenge addressed by my research is the creation of a virtual reconstruction that can communicate the experience of prison through the integration of narrative, light modeling and sound. The proposed visualization is a video installation based on these women’s personal experiences of the solitary confinement cell (calabozo).

The impact of ‘life’ behind bars: understanding space, impression management and masculinity through former inmate narratives

Gacek, James 28 July 2015 (has links)
Focusing on the architecture of carceral space, ‘impression management’ strategies, and masculinity performances within incarceration, this study examines the extent to which carceral space impacts the identity and behaviour of inmates throughout their interactions, both within the prison system and the inner-city. Qualitative, semi-structured interviews were conducted with ten men who experienced periods of incarceration in Manitoba. Their narratives indicate that alternative spatial theorizing is needed to conceptualize the prison space—in terms of the prison as a ‘place,’ as well as ‘social,’ and ‘carceral’ space—and that there is a significant amount of impression and emotional management needed when interacting with other inmates. Recidivism, finding meaningful employment, and building positive social networks with family and friends on the outside remain persistent obstacles for community reintegration. Examining the intersections of spatiality, masculinity, and identity allows us to explore alternative processes to restore (former) inmates into their communities moving forward. / October 2015
