Late-Holocene stream dynamics on the middle Gila River, Pinal County, Arizona

An archival-stratigraphic investigation of the middle Gila River provides insights into late-Holocene channel behavior and flood-plain formation. Historical records detail changes in channel patterns that correlate with changing frequency of large floods, but channel sensitivity is also affected by factors such as flood seasonality, changes in sediment load, human disturbances, and internal thresholds. Because the frequency of large floods is the dominant factor in channel changes, radiocarbon-dated flood deposits in late-Holocene alluvial terraces allow for a reconstruction of prehistoric channel behavior. A period of reduced large flood frequency and channel stability 4,000-1,000 years BP separates periods of increased large flood frequency and channel instability 5,000-4,000 and 1,000-0 years BP. Transformations between braided and single channel morphologies affect the conveyance of floods and change the spatial characteristics of flood hazards. These channel dynamics are also important in analyzing changes in Hohokam-Pima irrigation technology and settlement patterns.

LATEST QUATERNARY PALEOCLIMATE RECONSTRUCTION UTILIZING STABLE ISOTOPIC AND TRACE ELEMENT PROXIES IN A STALAGMITE FROM CULVERSON CREEK CAVE, WEST VIRGINIA

A reconstruction of regional climate variability in southern West Virginia that spans the last glacial/interglacial transition is presented. Paleoclimate interpretations obtained from the 50-cm long stalagmite provide key insights regarding the timing, magnitude, and forcing mechanisms responsible for past climate variability. Stable isotopic (δ18O and δ13C) and trace element (Ba, Sr, Mg) signatures from samples contiguously milled along the growth-axis of a 230Th-dated stalagmite which grew between approximately 20 and 5 thousand years before present (kyr BP) provide critical constraints for above-cave mean annual temperature, seasonality of moisture mean annual precipitation, and potential vegetation shifts. Specifically, the stalagmite record reveals subcentennial-scale variations in the proxy records, and strong multimillennial-scale features that correlate to well-known patterns of sea-surface variability in the North Atlantic Ocean (i.e., Bond cycles). The large-scale glacial/interglacial transition is sufficiently resolved to show that regional climate changes largely paralleled climatic transitions preserved in low-latitude (Chinese monsoon records; Cariaco Basin) and high-latitude (Greenland Ice Sheet) paleo-archives. However, the Younger Dryas interval in the south-central Appalachian Mountains is not as prominent a feature as in other records.

The Sentinel-Arlington Volcanic Field, Arizona

abstract: ABSTRACT The Sentinel-Arlington Volcanic Field (SAVF) is the Sentinel Plains lava field and associated volcanic edifices of late Cenozoic alkali olivine basaltic lava flows and minor tephra deposits near the Gila Bend and Painted Rock Mountains, 65 km-100km southwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The SAVF covers ~600 km2 and consists of 21+ volcanic centers, primarily low shield volcanoes ranging from 4-6 km in diameter and 30-200 m in height. The SAVF represents plains-style volcanism, an emplacement style and effusion rate intermediate between flood volcanism and large shield-building volcanism. Because of these characteristics, SAVF is a good analogue to small-volume effusive volcanic centers on Mars, such as those seen the southern flank of Pavonis Mons and in the Tempe Terra region of Mars. The eruptive history of the volcanic field is established through detailed geologic map supplemented by geochemical, paleomagnetic, and geochronological analysis. Paleomagnetic analyses were completed on 473 oriented core samples from 58 sites. Mean inclination and declination directions were calculated from 8-12 samples at each site. Fifty sites revealed well-grouped natural remanent magnetization vectors after applying alternating field demagnetization. Thirty-nine sites had reversed polarity, eleven had normal polarity. Fifteen unique paleosecular variation inclination and declination directions were identified, six were represented by more than one site with resultant vectors that correlated within a 95% confidence interval. Four reversed sites were radiometrically dated to the Matuyama Chron with ages ranging from 1.08 ± 0.15 Ma to 2.37 ± 0.02 Ma; and one normal polarity site was dated to the Olduvai normal excursion at 1.91 ± 0.59 Ma. Paleomagnetic correlations within a 95% confidence interval were used to extrapolate radiogenic dates. Results reveal 3-5 eruptive stages over ~1.5 Ma in the early Pleistocene and that the SAVF dammed and possibly diverted the lower Gila River multiple times. Preliminary modeling of the median clast size of the terrace deposits suggests a maximum discharge of ~11300 cms (~400,000 cfs) was necessary to transport observed sediment load, which is larger than the historically recorded discharge of the modern Gila River. / Dissertation/Thesis / Doctoral Dissertation Geological Sciences 2015

There is little consensus on what forced the climate of southern Africa to change during the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). Because of southern Africa's latitudinal position, changes in seasonal precipitation can help resolve the influence of internal climate factors such as groundwater and external climate forcers such as large scale atmospheric circulation patterns. This paper presents a simple model of groundwater discharge based on permeability and topography in comparison with general circulation model precipitation results and paleoenvironmental proxy records. Results show that during the LGM the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) likely weakened and moved slightly further south while the westerlies likely expanded slightly northward, with no significant change in strength. The climate and groundwater results were compared to the distribution of LGM and pre-LGM archaeological sites. Results show that the Later Stone Age peoples of southern Africa were likely inhabiting a relatively wet environment rather than an arid one.

Pertinence et calibration d'un nouveau marqueur paléohydrologique : le rapport isotopique de l'hydrogène mesuré sur la miliacine / Relevancy and calibration of a new paleohydrological proxy based on the hydrogen isotope composition of miliacin

Ce travail a pour objectif de développer un nouvel indicateur quantitatif des conditions hydrologiques passées fondé sur la composition isotopique en hydrogène (δD) d’un biomarqueur sédimentaire spécifique du millet commun (Panicum miliaceum), la miliacine. L’étude de la pertinence spatio-temporelle de cet indicateur révèle que le δD miliacine de plants de millet dans un champ, bien que dispersé, suit une loi gaussienne. Le δD miliacine du sol correspond au δD miliacine des plantes cultivées l’année précédente. L’évolution interannuelle du δD miliacine est globallement parallèle à celle du δD des eaux météoriques, les différences pouvant être attribuées à des différences d’humidité. La comparaison des valeurs de δD miliacine dans des sédiments du même âge prélevés sur deux archives distinctes dans le Lac du Bourget témoigne que l’archivage de cet indicateur est intègre de manière homogène les conditions climatiques ayant régné dans le bassin versant. La culture de millet en chambre climatique démontre que, si le δD de l’eau de source est le principal facteur controlant le δD miliacine, ce dernier est très étroitement corrélé au δD de l’eau de la feuille. De légères différences de fractionnement biosynthétique net entre n-alcanes et miliacine sous deux conditions d’humidité laissent supposer que l’analyse combinée de biomarqueurs sédimentaires issus de voies synthétiques distinctes permettrait d’accéder à la fois aux variables paléoenvironnementales clé que sont le δD de l’eau de source et l’humidité. / This work aims at developing a new proxy of past hydrological conditions based on the hydrogen isotopic composition (δD) of a sedimentary biomarker that is specific for broomcorn millet (Panicum miliaceum), miliacin. Analysing the spatio-temporal relevancy of this proxy reveals that miliacin δD values of plants cultivated in the field, although dispersed, follow a Gaussian law. Soil miliacin δD values are the same as those found for plants grown the year before. Interannual variations in plant miliacin δD values roughly parallel those of precipitation δD values, slight differences being attributed to differences in relative humidity. The comparison of miliacin δD values in sediments deposited in two distinct settings at the same time in Lake le Bourget attests that this proxy homogeneously integrates climatic conditions over the whole catchment. Cultivation of millet plants in climatic chambers allowed demonstrating that, although source water δD is the principal controlling miliacin δD values, this later is closely correlated to leaf water δD. Slight differences in net biosynthetic fractionation between n-alcanes and miliacin under two relative humidity levels imply that the combined analysis of sedimentary biomarkers produced through distinct biosynthetic pathways could help discriminating between source water δD and relative humidity in paleoenvironmental studies.

A Multi-Proxy Study of Holocene Atmospheric Circulation Dynamics Recorded in Lake Sediments in Fennoscandia

Cellulose-inferred lake water oxygen-isotope records were obtained from five throughflow lakes situated along a north-south transect across Fennoscandia to help develop a better picture of Holocene changes in atmospheric circulation in the region. This research addresses prior evidence for the existence of non-temperature-dependent shifts in d18O of precipitation in the early Holocene attributed to changes in atmospheric circulation. The validity of this hypothesis is tested through the development of oxygen-isotope records from lake sediments and their interpretation in the context of independent reconstructions of temperature and precipitation from pollen and chironomid head-capsules collected from the same or nearby sites, and well-documented changes in vegetation composition. Records of carbon and nitrogen elemental content and isotopic composition and magnetic susceptibility are included in this multi-proxy investigation. Extensive modern isotope hydrology datasets spanning several years at four of the five sites also help to inform interpretations of the cellulose d18O records. Key results from this research are: 1) Elevated d18O in relation to prevailing temperature occurred during the early Holocene (c. 10,000-6000 cal. BP) for sites in northern Fennoscandia (Lake Tibetanus, Lake Spåime), in harmony with previous interpretations suggesting that strong zonal atmospheric circulation led to deepening of the precipitation and isotope shadows in the lee of the Scandes Mountains. 2) Evidence from a southern site (Arbovatten) reveals a previously unrecognized negative offset in the d18O-temperature relation during the early Holocene, apparently transferred directly from the North Atlantic without the orographic effects associated with a topographic barrier. 3) The modern d18O-temperature relation appears to have been established throughout Fennoscandia by c. 6000-4000 cal. BP, probably due to generally weaker circumpolar atmospheric circulation in response to lower summer insolation. 4) Comparison of two sites (Lake Spåime, Svartkälstjärn) in a west-east transect across central Fennoscandia reveals higher-frequency variability in atmospheric circulation at submillennial scales throughout the Holocene, which appears to be analogous to contemporary variability in the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) at seasonal-to-decadal time-scales. Evidence of such NAO-like variability also exists at two northern sites (Lake Keitjoru, Oikojärvi) during the Holocene, likely reflecting variations in summer and winter atmospheric circulation. 5) Complex lake-specific changes in productivity occurred in response to Holocene climate change, as revealed by carbon and nitrogen elemental and isotopic data in lake sediments. A major shift in atmospheric circulation pattern occurring at c. 4000 cal. BP probably led to a reduction in soil-derived 13C-depleted nutrients in five lakes (Lake Keitjoru, Oikojärvi, Lake Spåime, Svartkälstjärn, Arbovatten) associated with changes in terrestrial vegetation. Changes in sediment nitrogen isotope composition also occurred in these lakes at c. 4000 cal. BP, possibly reflecting changing nutrient supply dynamics because of enhanced nitrogen losses during spring snowmelt.
