Magical Transformation or Illusion of Grandeur: The Development of Downtown West Palm Beach, 1985-2015Unknown Date (has links)
From 1985 to 2015, local politicians like Kenneth G. Spillias, Jan Winters, and
Nancy M. Graham reshaped downtown West Palm Beach. They promised to eliminate
urban blight, and turned a crime-ridden area of the city into an upper-middle class
entertainment zone frequented by wealthy pleasure-seekers from throughout Palm Beach
County.
However, much of this transformation was an illusion. These politicians
eliminated local taxpayers from the decision-making process by circumventing their
votes, but subsequently taxed them to pay for the improvements. Furthermore, blight was
not eliminated downtown, merely relocated to areas surrounding the entertainment zone.
This resulted in ongoing tension between the mostly white patrons and business owners
in the redeveloped area, and the primarily black residents in the dilapidated
neighborhoods surrounding this development. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

THE ROOT AND HUE OF SCIENCE: BLACK FEMALE STEM PROFESSIONALS IN PALM BEACH COUNTYUnknown Date (has links)
Research shows that the United States of America is losing its competitive stance in the area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) relative to other countries. One strategy that could solve this problem would be to diversify the field of STEM to include more women of color. The purpose of this narrative, qualitative research study was to explore the lived experiences of Black women with advanced/terminal degrees who are current STEM professionals in Palm Beach County.
Fourteen Black women participated in this study, which yielded four major findings that included early exposure to education’s value. importance of a strong sense of self/self-identity, challenges, and discrimination.
The hope is that these findings will provide local administrators and elected officials/decision-makers (e.g., the school district, higher education, and government agencies) with information that could advise future practices and policies to close the gap of under-represented Black women in STEM industries. / Includes bibliography. / Dissertation (PhD)--Florida Atlantic University, 2021. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Florida's definition and subsequent calculatons of a public high school graduate: a critical race theory analysisUnknown Date (has links)
On March 18, 2008, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Florida filed a class action lawsuit against The Palm Beach County School Board and its district superintendent on behalf of approximately 176,000 students under their jurisdiction (Schroeder v. The Palm Beach County School Board, 2008). The plaintiffs cited the defendants for their failure "to provide a uniform, efficient, safe, secure, and high quality education" (p. 7) as required by the Florida Constitution, Article IX, ß 1. They contended that their claim was substantiated by The School District of Palm Beach County's (SDPBC) dismal high school graduation rates. Spurred by the lawsuit, I wanted to understand the controversy surrounding high school graduation rates, in spite of decades of school reform measures, and why different calculation methods are utilized in the state of Florida. In respect to the latter point, I was curious to learn about the differences among graduation rate calculation methods and what impact, if any, these differences had on the reporting of high school graduation rates, particularly those for students of color. Black America's past and present reality in public education has illustrated the need for new paradigms to address the achievement gap promulgated by contextual factors that serve to impede the academic achievement of all students. The statistical analyses and Critical Race Realist perspective, which has evolved from Critical Race Theory when applied to policy research, offered in this study found Florida's definition and subsequent calculations of a public high school graduate to result in significant and consistent differences among graduation rates relative to student race and graduation rate calculation method. / by Terri N. Public relations for Palm Beach High SchoolUnknown Date (has links)
Good public relations as a necessary element. By good public relations for schools we mean that the school should carry on its work well and keep the whole community informed on how well it is doing. Since the total program of the school should be a sound one for acceptance by the public, each worker in the school is immediately involved. Not only administrators and principals but teachers, pupils and custodians must be well informed on what the school is trying to accomplish and how it is doing so. All participate in helping to inform the public. An Analysis of Discourse Present in Sex Education Literature from Palm Beach County Middle Schools: Are Kids Really Learning?Unknown Date (has links)
Issues of sexual assault have become pervasive across all social strata in
American society. Citizens need to start having conversations regarding these issues. To
combat the issue of sexual assault, children need to be educated regarding the
multifaceted aspects of sex through sex education in order to understand consent and
resources they have available to them. Utilizing grounded theory methodology, this thesis
analyzes sex education literature provided to Palm Beach County Middle School
students. Using Burke’s theory of terministic screens and Foucauldian theories of power
and control; an understanding of the ideological underpinnings of this literature and
discourse were acquired. After analysis, suggestions for disclosure and sex education
programs are provided. / Includes bibliography. / Thesis (M.A.)--Florida Atlantic University, 2017. / FAU Electronic Theses and Dissertations Collection

Mapping and analyzing the Florida Reef Tract in Palm Beach County in relation to major storm events in a GIS databaseUnknown Date (has links)
The Florida Reef Tract in Southeast Florida is made up of hard-bottom formations. The shape and size of the tract is constantly changing. One major factor contributing to these changes is the movement of sand. This is influenced by location-based, human-induced, and natural factors. These shifting sands cover or uncover reef structure. Images of the Florida Reef Tract in Palm Beach County were analyzed by the Department of Geosciences at Florida Atlantic University, using a partially automated method of mapping. There are notable changes in reef structure throughout the years 2004-2006, in which many major storm events occurred in the region. A time series analysis was conducted throughout these years. Losses and gains of reef structure were quantified and compared throughout the county as a whole, in beach renourishment project areas, and inlet intervals. Trends suggest that the major storms of 2004-2006 may have had effects on the reef tract. / by Joseph G.
