Radiation Pattern Reconfigurable Horn Antenna Based on Parasitic Layer Concept

In recent years, multi-functional reconfigurable antennas (MRA) has attracted much attention in wireless communication. The reconfigurable antenna can adapt itself with changing system conditions, and it can provide different multi-functionalities which can give better system performances. Instead of using multiple antennas, a single reconfigurable antenna can provide the same performance and occupy less space. By using the parasitic layer technique, an antenna can be turned into a reconfigurable antenna. The main objective of this thesis is to study radiation pattern reconfiguration of the horn antenna by using the parasitic layer concept. The MRA consists of a single horn, dielectric loaded truncated pyramid (DLTP), and the parasitic layer. The antenna that is chosen in this thesis is the horn antenna because it provides high directivity. DLTP is used for magnification purpose. The results show that three modes of operations that provide better performances compared to the single horn antenna are achieved.

Internal Dual-/Multi-Network Antennas for Laptop Computers

For laptop computers, the conventional internal antennas are usually used to operate in the WLAN system only, which can not provide sufficient and seamless services for wireless users. In order to overcome this problem, we propose some internal antennas having dual-/multi-network operation capability in this dissertation. Firstly, we present a combo antenna, which combines two shorted monopole antennas for operating in the WWAN/WLAN dual-network system. Secondly, we introduce a shorted monopole antenna through adding a parasitic element to enhance the impedance bandwidth for operating in the WLAN/WiMAX dual-network system. Thirdly, for achieving the compact-size antenna, we present a composite antenna which is composed of a ceramic chip and a printed radiating portion. Fourthly, we introduce a wideband shorted monopole antenna which can provide a wide bandwidth to cover the WPAN, WLAN, and WiMAX operations, and apply it to the MIMO system. Finally, we propose a coupling-type monopole antenna having multi-network operation capability and a compact size, which is about the smallest antenna for wideband operation in the laptop computer so far.

Dans le contexte actuel où l’évolution des systèmes sans-fil est jugée importante, il estnécessaire de pouvoir réduire les pollutions électromagnétiques qui limitent l’acceptabilité descommunications et la cohabitation des systèmes. D’une façon générale, les besoins de contrôle durayonnement des antennes miniatures répondent donc à une demande croissante pour améliorer lesportées mais aussi pour limiter les interférences dans les systèmes sans-fil. Ces dernières années,malgré le développement connu dans les domaines des antennes, la question du contrôle durayonnement des antennes miniatures connait plusieurs barrières empêchant leur déploiementtechnologique. L’approche retenue dans le cadre de cette thèse est le développement de nouveauxconcepts de contrôle du rayonnement des antennes miniatures par la mise en oeuvre de différentestechniques. Cette étude a pour objectif de soulever quelques questions concernant un sujet d’étude peuexploré. / In the current context where the evolution of communicating objects is important indifferent growing fields such as: localization, wireless multimedia systems, etc., controlling theradiation pattern of antennas is one of the most important issues for future radio communicationsystems. In recent years, despite the growth experienced in the areas of antennas, the issue of smallantennas radiation control knows several barriers preventing their deployment. This thesis focuses onthe analysis of the problem of controlling the radiation pattern of small antennas and aims to raisesome questions about a little-explored subject of study. This work gives an approach using differenttechniques to develop new concepts of controlling the radiation pattern of antennas.
