The House of Mothers with no "terreiro.": ethnography of matriarchal lamily model in black popular neighborhoods in the city 01Salvador is a descriptive and longitudinal study - realized between 1992 and 2003 - in two large family networks led by two grandmothers. This "family ethnography" was developed from the hermeneutic interpretation of many family members' narratives, and from the observation of intragroup relationships and the transformation of the houses over the years. House, as in Lévi-Strauss, is taken to mean a physical and geographical space, but also a social category, similar to a group identity, since the house is the place where bodies who founded and live in it also get "constructed" and occupy specific spaces themselves. With and through the house, individuais construct representations of themselves and of the world, establishing relationships with others inside and outside house. In the study of the matriarchal family model, there was a special interest in comprehending the modality of female leadership itself, which brought about a revision ofthe concept ofBlack Matriarchy (or The Black Family) through the idea of matriarchality, intended in this thesis as one of the forms adopted by the matrifocality.
