Who Creates Jobs? Econometric Modeling and Evidence for Austrian Firm Level DataHuber, Peter, Oberhofer, Harald, Pfaffermayr, Michael 09 1900 (has links) (PDF)
This paper offers an empirical analysis of net job creation patterns at the firm level for the Austrian economy between 1993 and 2013 focusing on the impact of firm size and age. We propose a new estimation strategy based on a two-part model. This allows to identify the structural parameters of interest and to decompose behavioral differences between exiting and surviving firms. Our findings suggest that conditional on survival, young Austrian firms experience the largest net job creation rates. Differences in firm size are not able to explain variation in net job creation rates among the group of continuing enterprises. Job destruction induced by market exit, however, is largest among the young and small firms with this effect being even more pronounced during the times of the Great Recession. In order to formulate sensible policy recommendations, a separate treatment of continuing versus exiting firms as proposed by the new two-part model estimation approach seems crucial.(authors' abstract) / Series: Department of Economics Working Paper Series

The economic worth of domestic workers in South Africa.Mangqalaza, Hlokoma January 2012 (has links)
M. Tech. Comparative Local Development. Department of Economics / This study is a theoretical exploration of what constitutes the economic worth of domestic work in South Africa. Due to the particular conditions of the South African economy, it has been difficult to measure the economic worth of this type of labour. Domestic work was performed by housewives, but now women in South Africa seek employment in domestic labour for economic survival. This study will explore the factors which determine the value of domestic labour in the South African economy today. Though domestic employment is undervalued it contributes vastly to the formal sector directly or indirectly. Domestic workers have experienced a specific type of economic exploitation as their labour is perceived to carry low economic value because no formal training is required for domestic labour. In South Africa, government has enforced legislation that governs and protects domestic workers. This however may still not be enough to fundamentally alter the conditions of domestic work in South Africa and this study may provide a framework for a future exploration of the rationale for changing the conditions of work in this sector.

The Self-Characterization of Lillian Hellman in The Little Foxes and Another Part of the ForestVickery, Melissa J. 08 1900 (has links)
This study analyzed the personalities and actions of Regina, Birdie, Alexandra, and Lavinia from Lillian Hellman's The Little Foxes and Another Part of the Forest. The analysis was focused on the relationship between the life and personality of Lillian Hellman and each of the characters. The method of character analysis that was used was that described by David Grote in Script Analysis, but the effect of cultural history on the characters and on Lillian Hellman was examined as well. It was discovered that Lillian Hellman had infused the characters with many aspects her own personality. In the case of Regina and Lavinia, Hellman also used the characterizations to sort out her mixed feelings toward her parents.

On A Cubic Sieve Congruence Related To The Discrete Logarithm ProblemVivek, Srinivas V 08 1900 (has links) (PDF)
There has been a rapid increase interest in computational number theory ever since the invention of public-key cryptography. Various attempts to solve the underlying hard problems behind public-key cryptosystems has led to interesting problems in computational number theory. One such problem, called the cubic sieve congruence problem, arises in the context of the cubic sieve method for solving the discrete logarithm problem in prime fields.
The cubic sieve method requires a nontrivial solution to the Cubic Sieve Congruence (CSC)x3 y2z (mod p), where p is a given prime. A nontrivial solution must satisfy
x3 y2z (mod p), x3 ≠ y2z, 1≤ x, y, z < pα ,
where α is a given real number ⅓ < α ≤ ½. The CSC problem is to find an efficient algorithm to obtain a nontrivial solution to CSC.
This thesis is concerned with the CSC problem. Recently, the parametrization x y2z (mod p) and y υ3z (mod p) of CSC was introduced. We give a deterministic polynomial-time (O(ln3p) bit-operations) algorithm to determine, for a given υ, a nontrivial solution to CSC, if one exists. Previously it took Õ(pα) time to do this. We relate the CSC problem to the gap problem of fractional part sequences. We also show in the α = ½ case that for a certain class of primes the CSC problem can be solved deterministically Õ(p⅓) time compared to the previous best of Õ(p½). It is empirically observed that about one out of three primes are covered by this class, up to 109

Additive Manufacturing solving Spare Parts Challenges within Heavy Equipment IndustryNamik, Ayad January 2022 (has links)
Background Companies which operate within heavy equipment are highly dependent on a continuous spare part stream to minimise their production downtime. The disruption of the pandemic known as Covid19 has brought the global supply chain to its knee, and countless companies have been affected by the global supply shortage. One of such industries is heavy equipment which comprises heavy-duty vehicles, large equipment, large-scale infrastructure, intricate or numerous processes with high operation cost and a unique set of challenges. Consequently, the demand for spare parts within heavy equipment can be extremely unpredictable and erratic, since the life cycle of machinery is connected to systems owned by the customers and its applications. Therefore, understanding the heavy equipment industry could allow for new innovative ways for managing spare part challenges. One of the methods for solving spare part challenges in other industries according to previous research has been the utilisation of additive manufacturing (AM).The AM technology is based on incremental layer-by-layer manufacturing compared to conventional manufacturing (CM) which mostly depend on subtractive manufacturing processes. Research questions RQ1: What are the challenges within the heavy equipment industry regarding spare part management? RQ2: How can the heavy equipment industry utilise additive manufacturing to overcome challenges surrounding spare parts management? Method The literature review comprised of the identification of spare part management challenges surrounding heavy equipment, the capabilities of AM surrounding spare parts as well as optimisation methods for existing parts with AM. Whereas the interviews consisted of two sets of interview groups (i.e., heavy equipment and AM based companies). Lastly, the experiment consisted of validating gathered data as well as identifying AMs capabilities based on a physical object (i.e., lifting bracket). Findings The findings show the existing spare part management challenges within heavy equipment are related to four dimensions namely: warehousing, cost, lead times and the environment.Whereas the findings surrounding AMs capabilities for mitigating spare part management challenges showed that, AM enable the production of low volume parts with low lead time replenishment. This could minimise overall waste within the heavy equipment industry, where central warehousing could be reduced as well as the total lead time for customers.
