Meta-análise do desempenho reprodutivo de novilhas e vacas primíparas de corte / Meta-analysis of reproductive performance of heifers and primiparous cowsEloy, Lidiane Raquel January 2017 (has links)
The aim was to evaluate, through a meta-analytical approach, the main factors that influence the productive and reproductive performance of heifers and primiparous cows. We used, in aggregate, data from 3,933 heifers and primiparous cows from 29 studies (dissertations and theses) and 43 experiments. The information related to the methodology and the results of each work were tabulated in a spreadsheet, constituting the systematization of the data. Through the available data, three articles were made. In the first one, the independent variables analyzed were: age of heifers (14 or 24 months of age) and primiparous cows (24 or 36 months of age) at the time they were exposed to reproduction, type of pasture (winter-spring cycle or natural pasture) and breed (Taurine or crossbred). The variables responses were the weight and body condition scores at the beginning and end of the reproductive period and the pregnancy rate. Larger body weights at the beginning of the breeding season and pregnancy rate were observed in heifers exposed to reproduction at 24 months (325.25±1.55 kg and 73.84±1.41%), in crossbreed (321.41±2,15 kg and 70.88±1.63%) and in those that grazed winter-spring cycle pastures in pre-mating (318.34±2.01 kg and 82.43±1.60%). Higher body weights were observed in the primiparous cows exposed to the breeding season at 36 months of age (376.09±1.55 kg), in the crossbreed (373.56±1.54 kg) and in those that grazed hiberno-spring cycle (377.80±2.29 kg). The highest pregnancy was observed in the primiparous cows at the 24 months of age (83.44±3.03%), in the taurine (88.53±2.61%) and in those that grazed winter-spring cycle pastures (77.68±1.93%). In the second study, the pregnancy rate was considered the response variable. Was evaluated analysis of subgroups between animal categories (heifers and primiparous cows), age of females at the time of the breeding season (14, 24 or 36 months of age), type of pasture (winter-spring cycle or natural pasture) and breed (Taurine or crossbreed). Heifers and primiparous cows, exposed to reproduction, had a higher pregnancy rate (80.24%). In the third study, the response variable was the pregnancy rate. Explanatory factors were animal category (heifers or primiparous cows), body weight at the beginning of the breeding season, average daily gain during the breeding season, breed (Taurine and crossbreed) and stocking rate. Through the present meta-analysis, the age at the which females were exposed to the breeding season, breed, type of pasture used in pre-mating, body weight at the beginning of the breeding season and stocking rate are factors that influence productive performance and reproductive performance of heifers and primiparous beef cattle in southern Brazil.

In animal feed, highlights the use of pastures. However, the vast majority are in some degree of physical or biological degradation. The objective was to continue the study of degraded pasture recovery, which started in 2011, with ways of introducing estilosantes cv. Campo Grande (Stylosanthes capitata and S. macrocephala) grazing Urochloa decumbens and associated with phosphorus fertilization in Oxisol dystrophic, medium texture. The experiment was conducted at the São Paulo Agency Agribusiness Technologies - APTA Far West, in Andradina / SP with data collection from August 2015 to July 2016. The experimental design was a randomized block with split plots and four replications. The plots were formed seven management strategies for pasture recovery: control pasture U. decumbens (CB); U. decumbens + estilosantes with partial desiccation with 1.5 L ha-1 glyphosate (DP); U. decumbens + estilosantes with complete desiccation with 3.0 L ha-1 glyphosate (DT); U. decumbens + estilosantes with tillage (PD); brachiaria + estilosantes with soil scarification (E), brachiaria + estilosantes with disc plows revealed inefficient harrowing (G) and pasture + estilosantes with plowing + disking (AG). Subplots evaluated the presence and absence of phosphate fertilizer. After four years of implementation of the experiment, noted that plowing + harrowing provided less mechanical resistance to penetration of the soil, while the largest weighted average diameter of the aggregate was the use of direct planting + partial desiccation. The phosphorus fertilization contributes to higher phosphorus concentrations in forage and dry matter production and lower FDN content in the rainy season. Phosphorus levels in the soil increased in relation to the values found in the implementation of the experiment. The tillage without desiccation presented the highest concentration calcium, magnesium, sum of bases, cation exchange capacity and base saturation.

Desenvolvimento corporal e desempenho produtivo de novilhas de corte prenhas aos 13/15 meses de idade / Body development and productive performance of the beef heifers pregnant at 13/15 months of ageSouza, Carolina Balbé de Oliveira de January 2014 (has links)
The work conducted at Rancho Santa Zelina Farm, Júlio de Castillos/RS, evaluated lhe grow and productive performance of 64 heifers of a commercial Angus herd since the conception to 13/15 months of age under four feeding systems during the gestation: Brachiaria pasture with supplementation + natural pasture in the final third of gestation (BRACS-PN), natural pasture with supplementation + natural pasture in the final third of gestation (PNCSPN), Brachiaria pasture + cultivated pasture (oat and ryegrass) in the final third of gestation (BRA-PC), natural pasture + cultivated pasture in the final third of gestation (PN-PC). The experimental design was completely randomized, four food systems and two plots, each paddock considered an experimental unit. For lhe performance variables of the calves, each calf was considered an experimental unit. At lhe end of the feeding summer/fall systems (06/02/2012), lhe heifers of BRACS-PN were heavier (392.0 kg) than lhe BRA-PC (375.5 kg), which were heavier than PNCS-PN (355.0 kg) and PN-PC (354.5 kg). During the winter, heifers on natural pasture (BRACS-PN and PNCS-PN) lost weight, while heifers on cultivated pasture gained weight and body condition. Heifers BRA-PC (421.0 kg) and PN-PC (377.0 kg) were heavier at calving, but the PNPC did not differ from BRACS-PN (323.5 kg) and these ones of PNCS-PN (306.5 kg). The aid to calving was higher in BRA-PC and PN-PC (37.5%) without differ of PNCS-PN (18.8%). The body weight of BRA-PC at the beginning of reproduction was higher (417.4 kg), without differ of PN-PC (392.0 kg) and BRACS-PN (351.8 kg), which ones did not differ of PNCS-PN (329.8 kg). Heifers of PN-PC had the highest pregnancy rale (100.0%), without differ of BRA-PC (87.5%) and BRACS-PN (66.0%), which ones did not differ of PNCSPN (62.0%). Calves of PN-PC and BRA-PC cows had higher weight gain until weaning. This results underscores lhe need for further studies in arder to identify higher growth of heifers prior the final third of gestation, to increase the know about the availability and management of natural pasture to minimize weight loss in late pregnancy and to identify grazing time on cultivated pasture pre calving to minimize tosses and aids to calving. Probaly, earlier first pregnancy through better rearing and genetics of calves initially enables a lower pre-partum period on cultivated pasture, reducing calving problems and, after, a long postpartum grazing on cultivated pasture.

PREDICTION OF LEAF RELATIVE WATER CONTENT USING PATTERNS OF HYPERSPECTRAL INTENSITYMark T Gee Jr (12174080) 18 April 2022 (has links)
<div>Drought is the leading cause of crop loss globally. Breeding for drought tolerance is difficult due to the polygenetic nature of the trait and low heritability of yield under drought. Plant relative water content is a secondary trait that may advance drought breeding programs.</div><div><br></div><div>The LeafSpec, a newly developed hyperspectral leaf scanner, was used to test the hypothesis that distribution of hyperspectral information across the leaf can be used to improve prediction of leaf relative water content. Data was collected across two experiments from five different maize genotypes representing temperate and tropical hybrids with varying levels of drought tolerance and inbreds with varying stomatal densities. The hyperspectral intensity averaged across the entire leaf was used to predict relative water content with an R2Prediction of 0.7989. Model performance was tested using additional predictors that quantify:</div><div><br></div><div>• Spectral information from multiple regions in the leaf (e.g. base, middle, tip).</div><div>• Spectral information from regions segmented by tissue type.</div><div>• The distribution of hyperspectral intensity in a cross section parallel to the midrib or in a cross-section perpendicular to the midrib.</div><div>• A contour pattern of hyperspectral intensity from the outside edge of the leaf to the midrib.</div><div>• Texture features extracted from each wavelength.</div><div><br></div><div>The mean spectrum model outperformed previously reported results, potentially due to the elimination of sources of noise and higher quality data produced by the LeafSpec. None of the models with expanded feature sets outperformed the mean spectrum model at a statistically significant level. The hyperspectral signal from the green tissue a third of the way from the base of the leaf and half way between the midrib and edge was the most correlated with relative water content. Models without midrib and vein tissue signals had increased performance. Distribution of the Water Index visually showed improved ability to discriminate leaf RWC as compared to individual wavelengths but this did not translate to improved model performance.</div><div><br></div><div>For future work, more data should be collected to improve model robustness and hyperspectral imaging should include SWIR wavelengths that have previously been found useful for predicting relative water content. Exploring indices composed from current spectral bands may lead to improved prediction performance.</div>

Grazing and Feeding Management of Lactating Dairy CowsSoriano, Felix Diego 12 August 1998 (has links)
Two studies were conducted during the grazing season of 1997. Study 1 consisted of three Experiments, and the objectives were to compare milk production and composition, body weight change and body condition score, and to determine time patterns of grazing between cows supplemented with different forms and amounts of corn. Also rumen fermentation parameters were measured in cows supplemented with two different types of corn. In study 2, milk yield was measured when grazing pasture was supplemented to lactating Holstein cows fed a typical TMR diet. Predominantly orchardgrass pastures with lesser amounts of white clover and Kentucky bluegrass were grazed during both studies. In Experiment 1, 36 Holstein cows were supplemented either with 6, 6, 6, or 4 kg/d DM of high moisture corn, coarsely ground corn, finely ground corn, or high moisture corn in two equal feedings, respectively. Milk yield was similar (30.3 kg/d) among treatments. Milk protein (2.97%) and MUN (14.7 mg/dl) did not differ among treatments. Body weight change and body condition score change were similar among treatments (23.1 kg and -0.24). During Experiment 2, four rumen-cannulated cows in mid-lactation were supplemented 6 kg/d DM of either coarsely ground corn or high moisture corn in two equal feedings. After the p.m. milking, ruminal pH was measured and rumen fluid samples were collected to determine ammonia N and VFA. While grazing, this was repeated at 0.5, 1, 2, 3,...8 h post-corn feeding (0 h). Ruminal pH was similar for both corn supplements and was lowest (5.9 and 5.8) at 5 and 8 h, respectively. Rumen ammonia N concentrations started to increase approximately 2 h after cows began grazing, reaching maximum levels 5 h later. In Experiment 3, the number of cows grazing, lying, or standing were recorded every half hour, for two consecutive days, while grazing. Cows grazed an average of 6.4 h/d, 4.1 h in the afternoon and 2.3 h in the morning. Similarity in milk production, milk composition, BW change, and BCS between treatments indicates that the quality and availability of pasture permitted equal response regardless of the type or amount of corn supplemented. Fifty four Holstein cows in mid lactation were used in Study 2. Cows were fed either a TMR diet only, or were fed TMR during half of the day (after the a.m. or p.m. milking according to the treatment) and supplemented with grazing pasture during the other half of the day. Milk production was slightly but significantly higher for cows on the TMR treatment (29.1 vs. 28.2 and 27.6). No significant difference between treatments was observed in FCM (27.7 kg/d), and milk fat (3.47) and protein percentage (3.23). While BW change did not differ among treatments (25.7 kg), body condition score increased more in cows fed only a TMR diet (0.14 vs. -0.06 and 0.01). The TMR intake was significantly different between treatments, being highest for cows on the TMR treatment and lowest for cows grazing after the p.m. milking (26.6 vs. 20.3 vs. 17.5 kg/d DM). Income over feed cost differed between treatments, and was approximately 15.3% higher for cows supplemented with high quality pasture during the afternoon compared to cows on TMR. Dairy farmers may obtain economical benefits by practicing this type of management during the grazing season with little effect on milk yield. / Master of Science

Developing the Yield Equation for Plant Breeding Purposes in Soybean (<i>Glycine max</i> L. Merr)Miguel A Lopez (7371827) 16 October 2019 (has links)
<p>Dissecting the soybean grain yield (GY) to approach it as a sum of its associated processes seems a viable approach to explore this trait considering its complex multigenic nature. Monteith (1972, 1977) first defined potential yield as the result of three physiological efficiencies: light interception (Ei), radiation use efficiency (RUE) and harvest index (HI). Though this rationality is not recent, few works assessing these three efficiencies as strategies to improve crops have been carried out. This thesis approaches yield from the perspective of Ei, RUE, and HI to better understand yield as the result of genetic and physiological processes. This study reveals the phenotypic variation, heritability, genetic architecture, and genetic relationships for Ei, RUE, and HI and their relationships with GY and other physiological and phenological variables. Similarly, genomic prediction is presented as a viable strategy to partially overcome the tedious phenotyping of these traits. A large panel of 383 soybean recombinant inbred lines (RIL) with significant yield variation but shrinkage maturity was evaluated in three field environments. Ground measurements of dry matter, photosynthesis (A), transpiration (E), water use efficiency (WUE), stomatal conductance (gs), leaf area index (LAI) and phenology (R1, R5, R8) were measured. Likewise, RGB imagery from an unmanned aircraft system (UAS) were collected with high frequency (~12 days) to estimate the canopy dynamic through the canopy coverage (CC). Light interception was modeled through a logistic curve using CC as a proxy and later compared with the seasonal cumulative solar radiation collected from weather stations to calculate Ei. The total above ground biomass collected during the growing season and its respective cumulative light intercepted were used to derive RUE through linear models fitting, while apparent HI was calculated through the ratio seeds dry matter vs total above-ground dry matter. Additive-genetic correlations, genome wide association (GWA) and whole genome regressions (WGR) were performed to determine the relationship between traits, their association with genomic regions, and the feasibility of predicting these efficiencies through genomic information. Our results revealed moderate to high phenotypic variation for Ei, RUE, and HI. Additive-genetic correlation showed a strong relationship of GY with HI and moderate with RUE and Ei when the whole data set was considered, but negligible contribution of HI on GY when just the top 100 yielding RILs were analyzed. High genetic correlation to grain yield (GY) was also observed for A (0.87) and E (0.67), suggesting increase in GY can be achieved through the improvement of A or E. The GWA analyses showed that Ei is associated with three SNPs; two of them located on chromosome 7 and one on chromosome 11 with no previous quantitative trait loci (QTLs) reported for these regions. RUE is associated with four SNPs on chromosomes 1, 7, 11, and 18. Some of these QTLs are novel, while others are previously documented for plant architecture and chlorophyll content. Two SNPs positioned on chromosome 13 and 15 with previous QTLs reported for plant height and seed set, weight and abortion were associated with HI. WGR showed high predictive ability for Ei, RUE, and HI with maximum correlation ranging between 0.75 to 0.80. Both directed and undirected multivariate explanatory models indicate that HI has a strong relationship with A, average growth rate of canopy coverage for the first 40 days after planting (AGR40), seed-filling (SFL), and reproductive length (RL). According to the path analysis, increase in one standard unit of HI promotes changes in 0.5 standard units of GY, while changes in the same standard unit of RUE, and Ei produce increases on GY of 0.20 and 0.19 standard units. This study presents novel genetic knowledge for Ei, RUE, HI and GY along with a set of tools that may contribute to the development of new cultivars with enhanced light interception, light conversion and optimized dry matter partitioning in soybean. This work not only complements the physiological knowledge already available with the genetic control of traits directly associated with yield, but also represents a pioneer attempt to integrate traditional physiological traits into the breeding process in the context of physiological breeding<br></p>

Improving the efficiency of herbicide application to pasture weeds by weed-wiping and spot-spraying : a thesis presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philososphy in Plant Science at Massey University, Palmerston North, New ZealandMoyo, Clyton January 2008 (has links)
This study investigated methods to reduce herbicide application through improved targeting of weeds, thereby also reducing damage to pastures. The focus was to evaluate and improve wiper and spot-spraying application techniques for pasture herbicides as they reduce chemical use by treating just the weed. Wiper application of herbicides was shown to be a useful technique for controlling Californian thistles. In one trial, a stem reduction of over 90% when assessed 10 months post application was achieved with a double pass of clopyralid, metsulfuron and glyphosate when the plants were treated at the post-flowering stage and were vigorously growing. A double pass was superior to a single pass for glyphosate and triclopyr/picloram, but not for clopyralid and metsulfuron. Subsequent trials produced poor results possibly because of the stressed condition of the thistles and their growth stage as well as lack of consistency in wiper output and operator differences. Despite wiper applicators usually being selective, some damage to pastures was observed in the field, and from a series of experiments it was concluded that rain falling soon after wiper application was the likely cause of pasture damage. An innovative and highly sensitive technique using a spectrophotometer was developed to measure herbicide output from wiper applicators. A spectrophotometer could accurately measure clopyralid concentrations as low as 0.02 g active ingredient in a litre of water. The Eliminator and Rotowiper outputs were found to be highly variable while the Weedswiper was more consistent although it applied less herbicide than the other two wipers. Spot spraying experiments confirmed that glyphosate and metsulfuron create bare patches by damaging both grass and clover while clopyralid and triclopyr/picloram only eliminate clover. However, metsulfuron patches stayed bare for much longer while glyphosate ones quickly filled up with weeds and clover. Ingress of clover stolons appeared to be more important than re-establishment from seed in the recovery of patches. The bigger the damaged patch, the higher the likelihood of recolonisation by opportunistic weeds. Bioassay studies found that over-application of clopyralid and triclopyr/picloram provided residual activity up to 18 and 30 weeks, respectively, thereby potentially preventing re-establishment of white clover. The negative effects on clover seedlings from metsulfuron ranged from 3 to 6 weeks for standard and high rates, respectively, with a stimulatory effect on seedlings thereafter for up to 18 weeks. Dose-response curves for the application of metsulfuron and triclopyr/picloram into the centre 5% versus full plant coverage of Scotch thistle and ragwort rosettes showed that application of herbicide to the centre 5% was as effective at the same concentration and greatly reduced the risk of damage to pasture.

COMPORTAMENTO INGESTIVO DE NOVILHAS E TERNEIRAS DE CORTE RECRIADAS EM CAMPO NATIVO NO PERÍODO DE OUTONO-INVERNO / INGESTIVE BEHAVIOR OF BEEF HEIFERS AND CALVES REARED IN NATURAL PASTURE UNDER ROTATIONAL GRAZING DURING AUTUMN-WINTERCarvalho, Thiago Henrique Nicola de 23 February 2011 (has links)
Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Científico e Tecnológico / A experiment, in the period May- September 2011, was conducted in an area of
Universidade Federal de Santa Maria studying the ingestive behavior of beef heifers and
calves in a natural grassland of Rio Grande do Sul, under rotational grazing with different
intervals among grazing. The intervals among grazing was determinated by the thermal sums
of 375 and 750 degree-days for each treatment. Grazing, leisure and rumination times, time
spent in the supplementation and water troughs was evaluated on three occasions using visual
assessment periods of 24 uninterrupted hours. Bite rates, feed stations and number of steps
between stations were evaluated in two observations, one at the beginning and another at the
end of the experiment. No differences were found among animal categories for these
measures. There were differences in grazing and leisure times, between treatments, on the last
evaluated period and could be attributed to differences between forage mass. Number of feed
stations was different between periods and differed between treatments only in the second
evaluation. The number of steps between stations was different between the two periods with
only difference between treatments in the first assessment. Bite rate varied among the
treatments in both evaluations. It was concluded that differences in sward structure, caused by
the treatments, affected feeding behavior of both categories, and there were no differences
between them.
período inicial e outra no final do experimento.
