The infection process of <i>Colletotrichum truncatum</i> on lentil

The fungus <i>Colletotrichum truncatum</i> (Schw.) Andrus and Moore causes lentil anthracnose, which is a major challenge to lentil production in Western Canada. The pathogen infects leaves and stems, resulting in defoliation, stem girdling, plant wilting, and possibly plant death. Two races, Ct0 and Ct1, have been identified in the pathogen population in Canada. However, the differences in the infection process between the two races have not been described in detail. Currently, several lentil cultivars, such as CDC Redberry, CDC Robin, CDC Rosetown, CDC Rouleau, and CDC Viceroy, have resistance against race Ct1, whereas there are no cultivars showing resistance to race Ct0. The objective of this study was to investigate differences in the infection process between race Ct0 and race Ct1 using the fully susceptible cultivar Eston and the race Ct1-resistant cultivar CDC Robin. Experiments on glass well slides showed that race Ct0 had no inherently different conidium germination rate compared to race Ct1, and that differences in conidium germination between the two races on lentil plants were the result of specific interactions between the two races and lentil resistance. Investigations of the infection process of the two races on detached and attached leaves of both lentil cultivars were conducted starting 12 h postinoculation (hpi) until 72 hpi, including conidium germination, appressorium formation, and leaf penetration. Results indicated that differences in virulence of the two races may be related to the ability of conidia to germinate and form appressoria, as well as the ability of primary infection hyphae to grow in response to cues from the lentil cultivars. Furthermore, resistance of lentil to isolates of race Ct1 appeared to involve an inhibition in and/or delay of the spread of primary infection hyphae inside the plant tissue. Results of infection studies of one isolate from each race on attached leaves did not completely agree with results of the same isolates on detached leaves. Based on this study, race Ct0 and race Ct1 do not appear to be classical physiological races, but may represent aggressive races or some intermediate forms.

A Model-driven Penetration Test Framework for Web Applications

Penetration testing is widely used in industry as a test method for web application security assessment. However, penetration testing is often performed late in a software development life cycle as an isolated task and usually requires specialized security experts. There is no well-defined test framework providing guidance and support to general testers who usually do not have in-depth security expertise to perform a systematic and cost-efficient penetration test campaign throughout a security-oriented software development life cycle. In this thesis, we propose a model-driven penetration test framework for web applications that consists of a penetration test methodology, a grey-box test architecture, a web security knowledge base, a test campaign model, and a knowledge-based PenTest workbench. The test framework enables general testers to perform a penetration test campaign in a model-driven approach that is fully integrated into a security-oriented software development life cycle. Security experts are still required to build up and maintain a web security knowledgebase for test campaigns, but the general testers are capable of developing and executing penetration test campaigns with reduced complexity and increased reusability in a systematic and cost-efficient approach. A prototype of the framework has been implemented and applied to three web applications: the benchmark WebGoat web application, a hospital adverse event management system (AEMS), and a palliative pain and symptom management system (PAL-IS). An evaluation of the test framework prototype based on the case studies indicates the potential of the proposed test framework to improve how penetration test campaigns are performed and integrated into a security-oriented software development life cycle.

Modeling of Simultaneous Switching Noise in On-Chip and Package Power Distribution Networks Using Conformal Mapping, Finite Difference Time Domain and Cavity Resonator Methods

This thesis focused on modeling and simulation of simultaneous switching noise in packages as well as integrated circuits and the focus was mainly on the latter. Efficient and accurate methods have been developed for modeling the coupling due to SSN in multi-layered planes arising in electronic packages, extraction of the power grid in integrated circuits and simulation of the power supply noise in large size networks arising in power distribution network. These methods include conformal mapping, finite difference time domain and cavity resonator methods, using which the electrical performance of the power distribution system in a high speed electronic product can be predicted. The model developed for field penetration captured the effect of the magnetic field penetrating through planes in multi-layered packages. Analytical model for the extraction of the interconnect parasitics for a regular on-chip power grid has been presented. Complex image technique has been applied for modeling the dispersive interconnect on lossy silicon substrate. The Debye rational approximation has been used to approximate the RLGC parameters in order to simulate the frequency dependent elements in the time domain. The simulation of the entire network of the full-chip power grid has been carried out using the modified FDTD expressions. Several aspects of characterizing the generic on-chip power distribution network have been presented. The crossover capacitance has been evaluated using analytical model derived from conformal mapping. An analytical model has been proposed to extract parameters of on-chip multi-conductor transmission lines, which guarantees the stability and is applicable to general distribution of multi-conductor transmission lines. The above modeling procedures have been incorporated into a computer program, which generates the power grid model from the layout of chip power distribution networks automatically. Research on 3-D on-chip power distribution networks has been presented. The complex image technique has been extended from microstrip-type interconnects to stripline-type interconnects. Macromodel images have been derived with closed form expressions to capture the loss mechanism of the multiple conductive substrates. The effect of 3-D integration on switching noise has been illustrated in the time domain using examples.

Post processing of cone penetration data for assessing seismic ground hazards, with application to the New Madrid seismic zone

The seismic cone penetration test (SCPTu) is the most efficient means for geotechnical site characterization and the evaluation of seismic ground hazards. In this thesis, software systems including ShearPro, ClusterPro, and InSituData, are developed to automate post processing of these SCPTu data. ShearPro is developed to automate the post-processing of the shear wave signals. ClusterPro uses the proposed three-dimensional cluster analysis approach for soil stratification. InSituData facilitates the post processing of penetration data for seismic ground hazards analysis. A new three-dimensional soil classification chart is also proposed in this thesis to help discern soil layers that may be subject to seismic ground hazards, such as loose liquefied sands and silty sands. These methods are then applied to SCPTu data collected at previously-identifed paleoliquefaction sites located in the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). For liquefaction evaluation, the cyclic stress ratio (CSR) is computed using site response analysis by DeepSoil and a measured profile of shear waves derived from the 30-m SCPTU soundings and deep suspension loggings in AR and TN. The natural resistance of the soil to liquefaction, termed the cyclic resistance ratios (CRRs), is evaluated based on both deterministic procedures and probabilistic procedures. Based on liquefaction evaluation results at selected paleoliquefaction sites, regional CRR criteria for liquefaction are developed for the NMSZ. As even the latest major earthquakes in NMSZ occurred nearly 200 years ago, aging effects might be an important factor to consider in utilizing the liquefaction criteria to assess the seismic parameters associated with the previous earthquakes. The aging effects in the NMSZ were investigated through large scale blast-induced liquefaction tests conducted in the NMSZ. Then a procedure to estimate seismic parameters associated with previous earthquakes is proposed. It utilizes both the liquefaction criteria based on SCPTu tests and the empirical attenuation relations developed for the corresponding regions. The approach is validated through data evaluation related to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquakes in California and then applied to previous historic earthquakes in the NMSZ.

On mathematical modeling of shaped charge penetration

<p>Shaped charges are a well established type of projectile, subjected to a lot of research ever since emerging as a viable technology in the 1940s. The penetration achieved by shaped charges decreases with increased standoff distance. This is often attributed to the shaped charge jet losing its coherence. The Swedish Defence Research Agency however, noted no such loss of coherence in its experiments. An alternative explanation to the decrease of penetration was instead proposed. The object of this thesis was to investigate this proposed theory. To this end, the hydrocode Autodyn was used, modelling the impact of a high-velocity projectile into a generic target and analysing the resulting behaviour of the target. Several setups were used and several parameters were considered when evaluating the results. The conclusion of this thesis is that the alternative explanation offered is not supported by the observed behaviour of the target in the computer model.</p>

Impacts of environmental regulation and wind penetration level on the ERCOT market

As more renewable resources are added into the grid and environmental regulations are imposed to reduce emissions, there will be dramatic changes in the generation portfolio. Assessing the impact of these changes is important for policy makers, market participants, and general public to understand trends in the electricity market. This paper addresses this issue by analyzing how the ERCOT market is affected by CO2 penalty and wind penetration. In order to assess the future power system, the study model should represent the long term dynamics of various factors to find out how investment decisions are made economically in a competitive market with appropriate assumptions. Another important aspect is the short term market dynamics from real operation of power system. For this study, AURORAxmp, a commercially available market simulator, is utilized to capture both long term and short term dynamics. This study runs 5 different scenarios: two base cases with and without CO2 price, 20%, 27%, and 33% wind penetration level. The result shows that, increasing wind penetration reduces production and capacity of both coal and gas units, electricity market prices, and amount of emissions. However, increasing wind penetration has greater impacts on a decrease in generation from thermal units than reduction in thermal capacity, resulting in 11.4% capacity value of wind power. The study also confirms that CO2 price impacts capacity and generation of coal (negatively) and gas (positively) units in opposite ways, and reduces emission, but increases power prices and generation cost. Especially, the impact on retirement of coal units is noticeable. Almost half of the current coal capacity (19 GW), 9,390 MW, is retired by 2040 in this study. / text
