Previous issue date: 2005-03-22 / Financiadora de Estudos e Projetos / This work had for purpose to study the phenomenon of patchy cleaning
in the operation of the gas filtration, which happens when there is the incomplete
regeneration of the filter. A parameter very used to characterize this phenomenon it is
the cleaned fraction, which is defined as the ratio between the cleaned areas to the total
area of filtration. In order to investigate the patchy cleaning behavior, filtration
experiments were accomplished, with the intention to study the action of the cleaning in
the fabric of polyester, for different combinations of experimental conditions. To
characterize the cleaning for blocks, it has been developed a methodology that includes
imagining of the blocks and computer program that analyzes these images of the cake at
the end of each cleaning cycle. Using these images it was possible to mark the areas
removed with the aim to obtain the size of the removed blocks. The general results
showed that: for the maximum pressure drop of 1960 Pa, the fabric presented saturation
behavior starting from the second filtration cycle, and for the maximum pressure drop
2939 and 3919 Pa, starting from the fourth filtration cycle. Unlike what was expected,
the maximum cleaning velocity was not the one that gives the maximum removal of the
cake. The residual pressure drop showed relationship with the distribution of the sizes of
the removed blocks. Concerning the quantification of the removed blocks, the removed
total area did not present defined behavior with the number of cycles. The largest
percentage of the removed blocks presented size between 0,1 e 1 cm2. The area fractions
and mass fractions removed presented curves with similar behavior. Besides, the two
fractions presented very close values to each other, showing that the technique proposed
in this work of quantification of the size of the removed areas presented quite
satisfactory results.
do filtro.
parcialmente destacadas.

Previous issue date: 2006-09-15 / Universidade Federal de Sao Carlos / The present work aims to evaluate, through filtration process and cake detachment, the
behavior of two cellulose fiber filtering media with different air permeability values. The
powder material used was phosphatic concentrated rock of density 2,99 g/cm3 and its
average volumetric diameter of 8,34 µm. The equipment used was constituted of a circular
filter, powder feeder which controlled the massic flow and humidity by a microcomputer
and a system for control and acquisition of data. The filtering media used were cellulose
fibers, Rad More and Rad Plus, supplied by Alhstrom Louveira. The work was
accomplished by a successive sequence of filtration and cleaning during 100 filtration
cycles using cellulose filtering media. The technique employed for cake removal was
reverse air flow. In the experimental procedure, filtration velocity of 10 cm/s was used for
maximum pressure drop of 200 mmH2O, and 5 cm/s for maximum pressure drop of 100
mmH2O. Two cleaning velocity were employed for cake removal, 18 and 13 cm/s. The
results showed that the filtering media Rad Plus, when submitted to filtration velocity of 10
cm/s and cleaning velocity of 18 cm/s, obtained the best operational condition, as it
presented lower values of residual pressure drop for a larger mass retained during the 100
filtration cycles. For different filtration velocity, 10 and 5 cm/s, the filtering media Rad
Plus, more porous and more permeable, the amount of particle mass removed was larger
than for the filtering media Rad Plus applying cleaning velocity of 18cm/s as the removal
force for this cleaning velocity could remove the particles retained in the fibers. For
filtration velocity of 5 cm/s, a lower cleaning velocity, 13 cm/s, was enough to remove
larger amount of particles, when compared with the filtering media Rad Plus in the same
experimental conditions.
