Close Enough: Adventures in Fact-Checking

DeNies, Ramona Wynne 21 July 2017 (has links)
These days, fact-checking is a fashionable term in the worlds of both politics and the media. On broadcast news, tickers run below the speeches of politicians, with claims annotated in real-time and occasionally labeled as false. In newspapers like the Washington Post and online information hubs like Politifact.com, writers invoke the term to flag reporting that aims to correct or clarify the public record. At times, "fact-checking" efforts are themselves called out for partisan bias or personal gain. The term is now practically mainstream, used in everyday conversation to indicate disbelief. ("I'm going to have to fact-check you," CNN anchor Jake Tapper said to former Baltimore mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in August 2016, expressing surprise that she was the mother of a 12-year-old.) Given the proliferating parties of interest that now claim to be engaged in some sort of fact-checking endeavor--from policy think tanks to Facebook--it's no wonder that a term originally reserved for the pursuit of journalistic accuracy now suffers from muddied public understanding. This study focuses on fact-checking in the context of print magazines: the media genre that innovated a formal version of the practice nearly a century ago. Magazine fact-checking, unlike the "fact-checking" tickers of broadcast news and newspaper postmortems, focuses not on setting the record straight after the fact, but rather on getting the story right before it goes to print. If a magazine fact-checker does her work well, she'll remain invisible to the reader. And that's because the published story, after her fact-checking, will afford the reader an experience uninterrupted by questionable logic, unreliable sources, or suspect data. Magazine fact-checkers aim for this level of perfection by employing a rigorous process that goes far beyond the verification of names, dates, and numerical figures. To illustrate this process, and explain my personal investment in this craft, I share my own experience working as the head of a city magazine's fact-checking department. To gain perspective on magazine fact-checking as practiced elsewhere in the nation, I interview other fact-checkers, writers, and academics. I also draw on case studies, media history, and personal anecdotes to examine some of the fundamental questions that inform the practice. (Among them: what is a fact? When does information become true? And what are the limits of a fact-checker's pursuit of truth?) In the world of fact-checking, there are best practices in the craft, and nuances to consider. Fact-checking also wades into deeper waters: those of philosophy, ethics, and social bias. But at its core, fact-checking is quite simply an application of critical thinking skills: skills that can be honed, and used for good. At a time when the media has lost the faith of many Americans, the magazine fact-checker can play a critical role in building that trust, one scrupulously vetted story at a time.

Establishing a Special Interest City Magazine: D, the Magazine of Dallas

Glaves, Robert F. 12 1900 (has links)
The problem of this study was to determine how, and to what degree, a representative contemporary special interest magazine projected editorial, advertising, circulation, and financial obligations prior to publication and during its infancy. In essence, how did a representative nonsubsidized city magazine identify a marketable audience, resolve advertising and circulation policies, and meet financial obligations? Specifically, this study explored--in six chapters--the mechanics of pre- and post-publication planning at D, The Magazine of Dallas, which began publication in October, 1974. This study determined that twelve common denominators are essential, but are not necessarily a guarantee, for the success of a planned or newly introduced nonsubsidized special interest magazine.

The role of magazine content in the creation of young women’s identities in South Africa

Govender, Jerusha Althea January 2013 (has links)
Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Technology - Public Relations Management in the Faculty of Informatics and Design at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology 2013 / This dissertation is a qualitative analysis of the print media in South Africa. The print media as a form of mass communication, functions in various ways. One of the main functions is to supply news, information and entertainment through magazine content on worldwide aspects. Through various attention grabbing tactics magazine content is able to alter our ideology and thinking. However, through attractive and entertaining topics the public can be affected negatively by the content utilised in magazines, which affects the ideologies and thinking of readers. This effect is mainly evident in younger women and can in turn result in readers unwarily turning to the media to shape their identities. This study examines numerous South African women’s magazines with the main objective of determining the role of magazine content in the creation of young women’s identities in South Africa. These magazines were selected on the basis of their content, structure, target markets and their editor’s willingness to participate in the study. The ten magazines researched for the study are ‘O Magazine’, ‘Marie Claire’, ‘Cosmopolitan’, ‘True Love’, ‘Move’, ‘Glamour’, ‘Grazia’, ‘Fairlady’, ‘Seventeen’ and ‘You’ magazine. The study provides a literature review on various normative theories of the press and also discusses the psychological effects of numerous persuasion theories. Some of these theories are the Feminist Media theory, Identity theory, Agenda Setting theory and the Uses and Gratifications theory. The study also analyses selected magazine covers with the aim of determining the ways in which readers are influenced by magazine content. The methodology for the study used content analysis and surveys in the form of telephonic interviews and questionnaires which were conducted with the magazine editors. The main results of the study indicated that magazine content is primarily aimed at uplifting women and creating awareness within readers to embrace their personalities and attributes. Consequently readers are encouraged not to conform to the current trends in society thereby supporting the theoretical underpinning of the normative theories of the press.

Qualidade e visibilidade em duas revistas cientificas bolivianas / Quality and visibility in two Bolivian Scientific Journals

Pabon Escobar, Silvia Cristina 14 August 2018 (has links)
Orientador: Maria Conceição da Costa / Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Estadual de Campinas, Instituto de Geociencias / Made available in DSpace on 2018-08-14T08:05:42Z (GMT). / Abstract: The objective was to understand and to analyze the quality and visibility of two scientific journals Bolivian: The Bolivian Physics Journal and Ecology in Bolivia journal. The research attempted to answer the following questions: 1st) Does the scientometric proposal helps to analyze the visibility of the journals? 2nd) Do the regional experiences (mainly Latin American ones) offer inputs to support this analysis? 3rd) Does the Bolivian context benefits or hinds the development and visibility of the publications? 4th) Finally, do Bolivian journals fulfill the minimum criteria of quality in the regional context? Among the main results, it stands out that, despite the scientometrics model is valid and it guides a lot of the studies related to the quality and visibility, it does not permit (through its two main mesures: citation and impact), to understand the situation of the scientific production in Bolivia, due to the low presence of publications at international, regional and local indexes. Besides, there exists ignorance about the importance of being part of the international records and there is also a poor developed scientific culture at the academic spaces of the country. About the Bolivian context conditions for the production of scientific magazines, it can be concluded that the development and the survival of the great majority of the journals has been hindered, mainly by financial problems, the low priority given to the issue from the national public policy and because some factors related to the editorial production process. Finally, the scientific magazines analized fulfill the majority of the norms and visibility criteria, being necessary to promote its value and integration into the national context and the visibility into the international scope. The methodology used in the study was qualitative, based in documental review and interviews. This methodology includes also criteria for the selection and the extrinsic and intrinsic analysis of the Bolivian scientific journals. / Doutorado / Politica Cientifica e Tecnologica / Mestre em Política Científica e Tecnológica

Leadership theory and women as leaders : a critical overview of the theory and the reality in the context of the magazine publishing sector in South Africa

Beudeker, Nolan Clarissa 12 1900 (has links)
Thesis (MBA)--Stellenbosch University, 2002. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: This study considers major trends and issues within leadership theory and various gender studies that have been conducted pertaining to the advancement of women leaders. The aim of the study is therefore to establish the reasons for the underrepresentation of women in senior- or executive-level positions in organisations, and then, to put forward an appropriate leadership development plan for women to better explore leadership opportunities that present themselves. Commencing with an overview of leadership theory in general, the study progresses on to topics specific to women in leadership, and more specifically, women leaders in the magazine publishing industry in South Africa. To this end, the study comprises both primary and secondary research. The primary research was conducted amongst women in the magazine publishing sector, based in the Western Cape, holding positions as senior managers, publishers or editors. The research was structured as qualitative research, in the form of in- depth, personal interviews, which were designed in a semi-structured interview format. The secondary research is based on an extensive literature review which covers a very broad spectrum of topics and concepts on leadership and the publishing industry in South Africa. The research found that women's access to leadership positions has increased not only on a worldwide playing field but also, more specifically, in the publishing industry in South Africa. Although a great deal of work still has to be undertaken, the prospects of advancement for women in today's business environment are far more positive than five or ten years ago. Organisations and educational institutions need to change their approach to developing leaders. They need to build a new future that is able to contend with global changes and that utilises all its leaders - regardless of gender.

Organizational publications editors : their use of information subsidies and agenda setting

Huffman, Holly D. January 1999 (has links)
This study was designed to identify correlates of success in Supported Employment(SE) programs for persons with psychiatric disabilities. Indiana policy-makers are seriously considering a managed care, or "capitated," system of payment to make SE provider programs more efficient economically. However, many agencies are concerned about providing services to more severely impaired individuals because of the potentially higher costs of serving these individuals. Two studies are included in this project. The goals of the first study were to identify SE consumer (clinical) characteristics that predict (1) successful outcomes, defined as whether the consumer achieves gainful work, and (2) program costs, defined as the amounts of SE service hours utilized by consumers who obtain work. In two large samples of SE consumers with serious mental illness, no clinical characteristics (e.g., diagnosis, rated functioning, hospitalization history) were associated with vocational outcome or service costs. The goal of the second study was to describe the types and amounts of services utilized by SE consumers who obtain work. Specific service categories associated with obtaining work were travel, training, and advocacy that was unrelated to the consumer's job. The implications of these findings are discussed in the framework of the debate over clinical versus empirical prediction. The need for a theoretical model of SE services that allows the use of predictive clinical and consumer driven services is also discussed. / Department of Journalism

Nanny, Pia 03 1900 (has links)
Assignment (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / ENGLISH ABSTRACT: After South Africa’s transition to democracy in 1994, many Afrikaans-speaking people were worried that their language might not survive, especially in a country where English became the accepted lingua franca. However, since 1999 a large number of Afrikaans magazines have entered the market. Publishers and marketers have realized the magazine-reading Afrikaans market is affluent and willing to use their spending power to read their language. Contrary to Afrikaans, the other indigenous languages have not proven themselves to be as marketable. Even though these languages are spoken by the biggest part of the South African population, they are mainly used in the speakers’ private spheres. In a country where most Afrikaans speaking people are bilingual and many South Africans are able to understand English, the question is: Why has Afrikaans not followed the same route as the other indigenous languages, and might it still go that way if its future is left to be determined by market influences? The focus of this study is on the origin and the development of the Afrikaans publishing market, with specific emphasis on magazines. Afrikaans’ position in the community and the economy of the Afrikaans magazine market will also be discussed. The study aims to answer the question: Is it still economically viable to publish in Afrikaans and what are the Afrikaans magazine publishing market’s prospects for the next five to ten years. The researcher comes to the conclusion that it is still very profitable to publish Afrikaans magazines. A publication’s success will be determined by whether it satisfies a need, whether it has a sound business model and whether advertisers are willing to use the publication as an advertising medium. It is up to magazines to convince advertisers to advertise in Afrikaans or to be willing to accept English ads. The less affluent Afrikaans-speaking market could be considered a future market for magazine publishers.
