Commodore Perry's 1853 Japanese Expedition: How Whaling Influenced the Event that Revolutionized Japan

Burcin, Terry 24 May 2005 (has links)
In July 1853, Commodore Matthew C. Perry illegally entered Tokyo Bay with a fleet of four American warships and challenged Japan's isolationist position towards the United States. This radical diplomatic effort concluded with a return voyage a year later and ended Japan's self-imposed isolation from the Western world. Historians, in an attempt to explain the motivations behind Perry's voyage, cite an American commercial desire for Chinese trade as the main reason behind the Japanese Expedition's dispatch. This historical perspective ignores the important economic and political influence the whaling industry played in spurring American politicians to confront Japanese isolationism. It is incorrect to assert that whaling, and not America's desire to gain access to China, was the main reason behind the 1853 Japanese Expedition. This paper's objective is to understand how whaling influenced Perry's mission. It should be read as a supplement to current historical scholarship concerning America's decision to send a naval force into Japanese waters. / Master of Arts

Royce and Perry on Idealism and Realism

Hudgins, Charles G. 13 January 2000 (has links)
This thesis is primarily an attempt to reconstruct the debate between Josiah Royce and Ralph Barton Perry concerning the viability of both the realist and idealist positions. Secondarily, I will show that this debate is a crucial part of an adequate understanding of the changes that took place in American philosophy in the early part of twentieth century. Royce's arguments against the neorealist position of Perry (and others) centered on both the nature of error, and the nature of independence. Perry' response to these arguments was an elaborate effort to demonstrate a coherent and consistent neorealist system which avoided the problems that Royce claimed must beset any such system. I will not attempt to assign the label of "winner" to either participant, however, I will show that the degree of incommensurability involved in the debate played an important role in the shift in American philosophy at the time. / Master of Arts

The narrative and the commemorative in the ceramic vessels of Hylton Nel, Wonderboy Nxumalo, Grayson Perry

Kopping, Jennifer 27 May 2008 (has links)
This study explores the narrative and the commemorative aspect of the contemporary ceramic vessel. It examines the context of the narrative and the commemorative and how it manifests in the works of Grayson Perry, Wonderboy Nxumalo and Hylton Nel. I have tended to take an approach that is Post Modernist and deconstructive which attempts to be inclusive. The narrative and the commemorative are explored and defined within the discourse of literary theory. Hence the concept of memory, history, time, narrative structure and semiotics are evident within these definitions. The relationship between the image and text is also explored and how the artist exploits this narrative device. The contemporary vessel is used within the narrative in the appropriation of ceramic tradition and is explored in the works of these artists. Futhermore these traditions are subverted and manipulated in order to convey the narrative, whose content is both private and collective and extends and transgresses the confines of societal boundaries. It will be demonstrated how each of the artists convey their own dialogue that is driven by their own personal histories. The chapters therefore explore thematically, many aspects of the narratives, all of which are relevant to the artists: · The Concept of the Child · The Didactic Nature of the Narrative. · Narrative, Genre and sign. · Sexuality, Transgression and Queer Politics. · Recalling the Past; History and Nostalgia. I n the final chapter I explore my own work from the required exhibition. Object /Vessel: Narratives of Containment. The subject of the narrative is explored within the context of the ceramic vessel and the mixed media drawing. Many of the aspects of the narrative explored in this study have influenced my own work, in particular the concept of memory, nostalgia and the past.

The Effect of Teachers' Epistemological Beliefs on Practice

Huling, Milton David 01 February 2014 (has links)
Unfortunately, for the most part, teachers do not teach the Nature of Science (NOS). Even when teachers have adequate NOS knowledge, their knowledge still does not make its way into practice. While there are various reasons for this happening, this study has isolated other, more typical, constraints to teaching in order to look more closely at the influence of personal epistemological beliefs, understandings of NOS, and their effects on practice. In an effort to minimize typical constraints of time for the teaching of NOS, a sixth grade physical science course was chosen as a way to minimize this constraint. Within this course there was a School District- mandated schedule for the teaching of NOS. This curriculum map included details of what NOS topics to teach and when to teach them. In Phase One of the study, correlational relationships between these understandings of NOS and personal epistemological beliefs were investigated. A Pearson Correlation Coefficient of 0.62 was calculated based on 28 sixth grade science teachers. In Phase Two of the research, eleven participants were chosen for a more in-depth analysis. Through the use of triangulation of interview data, classroom observations, artifact collection and survey scores to ascertain the constraints for each individual, even though few constraints could be verified that would affect instruction, only three of eleven participants taught NOS. Personal epistemological beliefs play a role in the way instruction is approached in either a constructivist or non-constructivist manner.

A Hope That’s Not So Hollow: How the Supreme Court’s Decisions in Windsor and Perry Alter the Political Environment in Which Marriage Equality Activism Operates

Brillhart, Emma 01 January 2014 (has links)
This thesis looks at the state of marriage equality activism in the wake of the Supreme Court’s June 26, 2013 decisions in United States v. Windsor and Hollingsworth v. Perry. Some scholars, such as Gerald Rosenberg, argue that Supreme Court decisions can never affect “significant social change,” either directly or indirectly, while others argue that such decisions can be hugely important in directly affecting policy. My focus is on how activist organizations, which have a substantial track record of directly affecting policy, are influenced by changes to the political environment stemming from major Court decisions regarding social issues. After examining how past litigative efforts such as Baehr v. Lewin and Goodridge v. Department of Public Health have affected the LGBT rights movement, and marriage equality activism specifically, I discuss how organizational strategies have changed minimally, but the political environment in which marriage equality activism is operating has shifted quite a bit, especially in terms of framing and legal precedent. I conclude that Court decisions can indeed have a significant impact on social change by affecting the way in which it is possible for activists on both sides of the issue to shape and deliver their message to the general public, legislators, and courts in future litigative efforts.
