Evaluation of a planning process considered as a curriculum component in the education of program managers in the defense industry

The purpose of this study was to use evaluation research methods to test the effectiveness of a model for planning programs in the defense industry.One of the major reasons for deficiencies in both training and education of Program Managers is the lack of a generic Program Management Planning Process which contains essential elements of program planning and which can be modified or tailored to accommodate the specifics of a given program.This study addressed the following evaluation research questions with regard to a selected Program Management Planning Process:1. How adequate is the functional Performance Measurement Baseline, as a result of following the Program Management Planning Process of this study?2. What is the quality of the resulting Performance Measurement Baseline?3. To what extent are the efforts in creating a performance measurement baseline as defined by the Program Management Planning Process of this study perceived as justified?4. Is the methodology employed in this evaluation research study generalizable to other studies of planning processes?5. Relative to integrated linear and integrated nonlinear models of planning processes, what does this study reveal?The results indicated:1. All of the activities of the Program Management Planning Process of this study were performed and their culminating products produced.2. The Performance Measurement Baseline for the program of this study was satisfactory, but subject to short-term obsolescence and may have been created without sufficient attention being paid to potentially significant cost, schedule or technical program drivers.3. The program planning team participants did believe the Program Management Planning Process of this study added sufficient value, over alternative methodologies, to merit its continued use.4. On the whole, the methodology employed in this research study proved to be generalizable for use on other programs.5. The findings of this study support the proposition that integrated nonlinear planning models are really macro-models and integrated linear models are really micro-models, as applicable to program planning. They are not separate models, but, in fact, the integrated linear model is a subset of the higher level integrated nonlinear model. / Department of Educational Leadership

An overview of dental assistant utilisation (DAU) and recommendations for the establishment of an undergraduate DAU programme in Australia

Master of Dental Surgery / At the present time in Australia (1992) there exists no undergraduate training for dental students in auxiliary utilisation. The result of this is that new dental graduates have no understanding of the concept of practicing sit-down four-handed dentistry in a comfortable and efficient manner. This compares with the United States of America (USA) where, since 1961, every dental student receives formal instruction in Dental Assistant Utilisation (DAU) and, since 1973, Training in Expanded Auxiliary Management. In this treatise the history and development of “four-handed dentistry” is presented along with a literature review of the fundamental principles of DAU. The intial pilot programmes and the subsequent federally funded national DAU programme in the USA are analysed. Four undergraduate DAU programmes from the USA and the current graduate continuing education DAU programme at Westmead Hospital Dental Clinical School are examined. Finally, guidelines for the establishment and operation of a DAU programme are outlined. The aim of this treatise therefore, is to provide the necessary information for a thorough understanding of the fundamentals and philosophy of Dental Assistant Utilisation. This information is presented in the hope that at some stage in the future training in assistant utilisation would become an integral and important part of the undergraduate dental curriculum in Australia. The purpose of this would be to fill a major void that currently exists in the undergraduate training of dental students in auxiliary utilisation.

Computer-based learning for the enhancement of breastfeeding training for South African undergraduate dietetic students

Human Nutrition))--University of Stellenbosch, 2007. / Introduction In order to address poor breastfeeding rates, both nationally and internationally, there is a great need for ongoing breastfeeding training for students of health care professions and health care workers (HCWs). Despite the availability of courses, there is a need for new approaches to ensure greater and more effective coverage in breastfeeding training. The students of today relate well to the use of computers in the learning environment. It was therefore deemed appropriate to explore this training method as a means to enhance the breastfeeding learning experience for students of health care professions and, more specifically, for undergraduate dietetic students. This study was aimed at adapting and validating an Indian computer-based undergraduate breastfeeding training module, intended for use by South African (SA) undergraduate dietetic students, in order to assess whether computer-based learning in breastfeeding training could address the relevancy of the topic, assess how students view the learning experience and determine whether it could contribute to a gain in knowledge of the subject. Methods An Indian computer-based undergraduate breastfeeding training module in PowerPoint format was adapted to suit the SA scenario. It was converted into web-based interactive material using the Virtual Training Studio (VTS) software tool. The adapted module was assessed for face and content validity by 19 peer reviewers and 17 third year Stellenbosch University (SU) dietetic students, by means of a self-administered questionnaire. A focus group discussion was also conducted with the third year students. The impact of the adapted module on knowledge was evaluated by means of a pre- and post-knowledge test on a total of 29 second year SU (n=14) and University of the Western Cape (UWC, n=15) dietetic students. Results All of the peer reviewers and students were of the opinion that their information technology (IT) skills were sufficient to complete the adapted module. The majority of the peer reviewers (94%, n=17) also indicated that they had adequate IT facilities and that it was feasible to administer the module. Peer reviewers and students enjoyed the presentation and delivery mode of the adapted module. Third year students indicated that computer-based learning (CBL) was a “nice way of learning”, but pleaded that it should not be used as the sole source of instruction. The majority of the peer reviewers and students (53%, n=19) rated the mode of learning to be equally effective compared to conventional lectures, 35% rated it as being more effective and 11% as less effective. Eighty six percent of peer reviewers and students felt that the information in the adapted module was sufficient to enable the students to take the necessary preventive- or treatment action. The majority (91%) were of the opinion that the information in the adapted module was appropriate for the specific needs and cultural context in SA. There was a significant increase in the knowledge test scores for second year students at SU and UWC. Conclusion The SA VTS breastfeeding training module can be integrated effectively as part of multi-media methods to increase knowledge and enhance breastfeeding training for undergraduate dietetic students, as well as other students of health care professions and, possibly, HCWs in institutions striving to become Baby Friendly.

Knowledge Level of Sales Personnel Employed by a Ladies' Apparel Manufacturer in Dallas, Texas, and the Need for Training

The purposes of this study were to measure and compare the knowledge level of sales personnel employed by a ladies' apparel manufacturer and to examine the need for a training program for sales managers, sales secretaries, and sales representatives. The data were gathered through a four-part questionnaire developed by the researcher. Sales personnel were rated as having low, medium, or high knowledge. The majority rated as having medium knowledge. No significant differences in knowledge level were evident relative to sales position or length of employment. Training needs tended to have little variance among respondents.

An Analysis of the Impact of a Behavioral Style Awareness Training Program on Retail Sales Effectiveness of Commission Sales Personnel in a Major Department Store Chain in the Southwest

The success of any retail institution depends upon many factors including personal selling effectiveness. Traditional sales training has focused primarily on the selling process with emphasis on how to close a sale. The idea of using behavioral style awareness training with salespeople has emerged only recently when behavioral training began to be recognized in the literature as a tool for sales training as well as for management training. The Social Style of Behavior concept developed by Dr. David Merrill was selected for use in this research study. Utilizing this concept, a behavioral style awareness training program was developed involving twenty hours of classroom training. Training methods used were lecture, role play, and videotaped materials with emphasis on behavioral identification and using versatility with applications to personal selling in a retail situation.

Addressing Multinational Corporations’ Aggressive Marketing of Commercial Formula in Indonesia and the Cessation of Breastfeeding Through the Design and Evaluation of a Counter-marketing Continuing Education Module

The purpose of this study was to address the aggressive marketing of commercial formula and breastfeeding cessation in Indonesia using an evaluation of a counter-marketing continuing education module. Using a convenience sample (N = 99) of breastfeeding educators and/or counselors, paired t-tests showed a significant increase in participants’ knowledge about counter-marketing after they participated in the training. Findings also showed significant increases post-training for stage of changes, self-efficacy, knowledge, and motivation to perform four key talking behaviors: i.e., involving talking to new and pregnant mothers about corporations’ inappropriate and aggressive marketing of formula, and the risks of becoming dependent on expensive formula and losing the ability to produce their own breast milk. These findings suggested that exposure to the counter-marketing continuing education training served as a brief intervention associated with significant improvements in level of knowledge about counter-marketing among participants and in stage of change self-efficacy, knowledge, and motivation for performing key behaviors of interest. Backward-stepwise regression revealed that higher level of motivation for taking an active role in the proposed campaign (i.e., A Campaign to Expose the Truth about Becoming Dependent on Commercial Formula and Breastfeeding Cessation) was significantly predicted by: (1) higher pre-training self-efficacy for talking to expectant and new mothers about the reasons to breastfeed their infant (β = .327, SEB = .118, p = .007); (2) lower pre-training knowledge for talking to expectant and new mothers about corporations’ inappropriate and aggressive marketing of commercial infant formula (β = -.270, SEB = .092, p = .004); and, (3) higher level of knowledge for taking an active role in the proposed campaign (β = .392, SEB = .083, p = .000). Participants rated the training as very good (74.7%, n = 74). Qualitative data showed that the training provided new knowledge and a new approach in addressing aggressive formula marketing by corporations. Further, participants found that the training has made them more confident and motivated to work with mothers and the community to advocate and educate about negative impacts from commercial formula.

One avenue for enhancing salespersons' performance is through improved sales training practices. improved sales training practices should help salespeople view training, and how sales training transcends to the job environment. Considering the need for greater understanding concerning salespeople's perceptions of sales training and assuming the influence of those perceptions on job performance and other outcomes, this study develops and executes an analysis of several proposed relationships among personal characteristics, job related characteristics, perceived training needs, sales training variables, and related outcomes. The program of research identifies and evaluates salespeople's attitudes toward sales training and specifies influences of those training perceptions on salesperson' behaviors and general attitudes. As well, a relationship between salespeople's transfer of training materials, their use, and individual performance are evaluated.
