Spectroscopy of proton unbound states in 32ClKamil, Mohamed January 2019 (has links)
>Magister Scientiae - MSc / This project aimed to investigate proton unbound states in 32Cl
using the 32S(3He; t) charge-exchange reaction. This research is
relevant both in the context of nuclear structure and astrophysics.
Excited states in 32Cl up to Ex 6 MeV were produced using a
50 MeV 3He++ beam from the K200 separated sector cyclotron
at iThemba LABS. The triton ejectiles were mass analysed and
detected at the focal plane of the K600 magnetic spectrometer.
An additional segmented silicon detector array called CAKE was
used to detect the unbound protons from states in 32Cl in conjunction
with the tritons. In this work we looked for potential
sources of isospin admixture that could explain the apparent violation
of the Isobaric Multiplet Mass Equation (IMME) for the
A = 32, T = 2 quintet. We also investigated the possibility of determining
the 31S(p;
) reaction rate indirectly, via measurements
of the partial proton widths of unbound states in 32Cl.

Making thought visible : colour in the writings of Virginia Woolf, Dorothy Richardson, Samuel Beckett and T.S. EliotDackombe, Amanda Marie January 2003 (has links)
This thesis explores colour as a philosophical means of transit between literature and the visual arts. I explore a new way of thinking about the self and about thought, developmg the significance of colour alongside, and internal to, modes of representation in the modernist movement. The interaction of art and literature is crucial to much debate on modernist aesthetics. DevelopIng the debate into the history of colour phenomena, I argue that colour aHows a philosophical inflection to certain clich6s (such as stream-of-consciousness) that are attached to modernist writing. In the work of Virginia Woolf, Samuel Beckett, Dorothy Richardson and TS Eliot, I argue that the modernist preoccupation with the seeming unpasse between thought and representation can be seen to be 'made visible' through the theme of colour. Colour is a vehicle through which to explore the relation between thought and perception, subject and object, and offers a new way of engagement with recent research into theoretical comparisons between thinking, writing and visual arts.

Towards a comprehensive framework for the analysis of anomalous diffusive systemsCairoli, Andrea January 2016 (has links)
The modelling of transport processes in biological systems is one of the main theoretical challenges in physics, chemistry and biology. This is motivated by their essential role in the emergence of diseases, like tumour metastases, which originate from the spontaneous migration of cancer cells. Thus, improvements in their understanding could potentially pave the way for an outstanding innovation of present-day techniques in medicine. These processes often exhibit anomalous properties, which are qualitatively described by the power-law scaling of their mean square displacement, compared to the linear one of normal diffusion. Such behaviour has been often successfully explained by the celebrated continuous-time random walk model. However, recent experimental studies revealed the existence of both more complicated mean square displacement behaviour and anomalous features in other characteristic observables, e.g. the position-velocity statistics or the two point correlation functions of either the velocity or the position. Thus, in order to understand the anomalous diffusion recorded in these experiments and assess the microscopic processes underlying the observed macroscopic dynamics, one needs to have a complete tool-kit of techniques and models that can be readily compared with the experimental datasets. In this Thesis, we contribute to the construction of such a complete framework by fully characterising anomalous processes, which are described by means of a continuoustime random walk with general waiting time distributions and/or external forces that are exerted both during the jumps (as in the original model) and the waiting times. In the first case we derive both the joint statistics of these processes and their observables, specifically by obtaining a generalised fractional Feynman-Kac formula, and their multipoint correlation functions and employ them to fit the mean square displacement data of diffusing mitochondria. This result supports the experimental relevance of our formalism, which comprises general formulas for several quantities that can provide readily predictable tests to be checked in experiments. In the second case, we characterise the new anomalous processes by means of Langevin equations driven by a novel type of non Gaussian noise, which reproduces the typical fluctuations of a free diffusive continuous-time random walk. For a constant external force, we also obtain the fractional evolution equations of their position probability density function and show that, contrarily to continuous-time random walks, they are weak Galilean invariant, i.e., their position distribution in different Galilean frames is obtained by shifting the sample variable according to the relative motion of the frames. Thus, these processes provide a suitable frame-invariant framework, that could be employed to investigate the stochastic thermodynamics of anomalous diffusive processes.

An experimental study of collective motion of magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1 / 趨磁螺菌AMB-1的集體運動觀測 / CUHK electronic theses & dissertations collection / experimental study of collective motion of magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1 / Qu ci luo jun AMB-1 de ji ti yun dong guan ceJanuary 2013 (has links)
In this thesis, the collective motion of Magnetospirillum magneticum strain AMB-1 is studied. Bacteria have developed various types of mechanism in order to search for the optimum environment, which are called taxis. There are two types of taxis, aerotaxis and magnetotaxis, that are involved in AMB-1. It is commonly believed that the vertical component of the Earth magnetic field helps to align the bacteria and confine them in one dimension, whereas the oxygen gradient determines their swimming velocity. In this way, magnetotaxis is conceived as a passive response, while aerotaxis is active and they work independently. Previous works done by our group may suggest an alternative picture. In this thesis, two experiments were carried out to gain a better understanding of the taxis of AMB-1. In the first experiment, bacterial suspension of density around 10⁸ cells cm⁻³ was injected into a chamber of dimensions 5×5×0.025 mm³. The motion of the bacteria was captured by a video camera mounted in the microscope under darkfield condition. Tracking of the quasi-2D motions under different applied magnetic field generated by two pairs of Helmholtz coils was done. In this way, we could determine the effect of magnetic field on basic physical properties of the bacteria, such as the diffusive motion, the rate of change of the motion direction. In the second experiment, a one dimensional oxygen gradient was achieved inside a microfluidic chamber. An aerotactic band of highly concentrated bacteria was observed under darkfield condition when bacterial suspension of density around 10⁹ cells cm⁻³. It is found that the time for the formation of the band varies under different applied magnetic fields, which suggests that the magnetotaxis in AMB-1 may not be completely passive. / Thesis M.Phil. The magnificent play of light: seeing the differencePorritt, Dawn, n/a January 2007 (has links)
Light as a concept is filled with a multitude of interpretations, ideas and possibilities and
no matter how technologically progressive we think we are, nature consistently controls
our human way of life. We are surrounded by nature and often gain inspiration by the
simple things around us. My interest in the phenomena of light and refraction was
sparked years ago by Claude Monet?s painting Bathers at La Grenouillere, 1869. It
showed simplicity of form and shape, yet emitted a luminosity and radiance of light
reflecting off water.
This thesis examines the subject of light as an optical phenomenon. My specific aim was
to create distorted, ambiguous and conflicting images in my photographs by using the
"optical phenomena" of light such as, refraction, diffraction and reflection as a basis for
abstracting reality. I wanted to capture the changes that occur when light changes
direction due to refractive qualities within a material such as glass, water or plastic, or
due to the reflective qualities of a surface.
The camera was exploited for its capacity to capture realism, but also to capture and
abstract natural phenomenon. The images were enlarged to magnify details and the
reality of the physical world was heightened as objects became ambiguous. Design
compositional techniques were used to decontextualise objects.
I approached this study with the idea that observation and awareness has importance to
image making within my design and teaching practice. This thesis presents my project
explorations showing the play of light on and through surfaces under different conditions.
I have documented this by producing a series of photographic images and a glossary as
an aid in the practice of design education.

Omission Phenomena in the American TV-series ”The Wire”Olsson, Lisa January 2010 (has links)

The aim of this study is to find out what effects the omission of intensifiers, interjections and fillers has on the general English subtitle track in the TV-series “The Wire”. Questions addressed in the study include the possible reasons for such omissions, and the consequences of applying omission strategies in this context. Thirteen episodes of the series were investigated in order to see to what extent these three types of words were omitted, and how that affected the experience when watching the series. The investigation showed that the majority of all omitted words in the subtitle track belonged to these three categories, and that technical restrictions were the most common reason for the omissions. Arguably, the lack of intensifiers, interjections and fillers made the language more stiff and formal, which in the end affected the authenticity of “The Wire”.

Analysis of hydrodynamic phenomena in a fluidized bed for thermochemical hydrogen productionHaseli, Yousef 01 April 2008 (has links)
This thesis examines transport phenomena of cupric chloride (CuCI2) hydrolysis within a fluidized bed. Conversions of CuCi2 and steam as a fluidizing gas are numerically investigated using a new non-catalytic gas-solid reaction model, proposed in the literature but here updated for the purposes of the present study. The results are illustrated considering two cases of kinetics for the consumption of particles: Volumetric Model and Shrinking Core Model. Consistent results in terms of the conversion of reactants versus superficial velocity, bed inventory and bed temperature are obtained by developing new solution algorithms abased on each of the above kinetic models. / UOIT
